Honor Wilkey for Fifty Years I.C. Service.
Melvin Edward Wilkey, agent-operator for Illinois Central Railroad in Providence, is in Chicago being honored for having completed fifty years with the railroad.
He and Mrs. Wilkey left Wednesday and expect to return home Saturday. They are guests of the railroad while there, and at noon today will attend a recognition luncheon in the Red Lacquer Room of the Palmer House where seventy-two employees completing fifty years with the railroad during 1959 wil be guests of President Wayne A. Johnston.
Approximately three hundred members of the Illinois Central management team will be present to fete the 1959 class.
At the luncheon, each fifty-year employee will receive an award in the form of a gold pass good for lifetime transportation anywhere on the Illinois Central Railroad.
Mr. Wilkey was born on a farm near Dixon on May 19, 1888. He attended school in Dixon and graduated from Bowling Green Business College. He entered the service of the Illinois Central as agent-operator at Cobb, Ky., November 5, 1908, and has continued in that capacity since.
From 1910 to 1914, Mr. Wilkey worked as extra operator and agent at the various stations on the Kentucky Division. In 1914 he became agent at Wheatcroft and his remaining service has been on the Evansville District of the Kentucky Division.
He was married on November 21, 1921 to Miss Mary Louise Mauzy and they live at 303 South Broadway in Providence. They have a son and daughter and two grandsons.
Mr. Wilkey is an active member of First Baptist Church in Providence; is a forty-five year member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers; and is a member of the Kiwanis Club, which he has served as president and secretary.
Mr. Wilkey is a baseball fan and spends his leisure time reading and working in his vegetable and flower garden. **
