I've been research my Avoyelles history using a library copy of "Some Early Families of Avoyelles Parish, Vol 1" and I've come across a mystery that I can't solve using just this resource.

I've come across mention of several Valery Defours, some obviously sons of others and I'm trying to straight them out.

Valery Dufour I m. Marie Louise Rabalais on 27 Sep 1806
Valery Dufour II m. Felonise LaCour on 20 Jul 1830
Valery Dufour III m. Clara Mayeux on 27 Jan 1852

Valery Dufour II b. on 25 Oct 1810

Does all of that sound correct? I need to plow through some Federal Census records but I thought I'd check with the brain trust.

Also, on pgs. 90-91 There's mention of Eugenie Dufour, daughter of Charles Dufour II and Eulalie Decuir, marrying in 1830 her cousin Martin, son of Valery Dufour and Marie Rabalais.

Following that it list as Eugenie's brother, a Valery Defour, marrying a Marie Rabalais.

Seems improbable. Anyone have any more info?

I'm also looking to confirm that Pamela Dufour born 1839 is indeed the daughter of Valery Dufour II and F. LaCour.

Lastly, I'd like to find copies of both Early Familes of Avoyelles 1 & 2 for purchase for my own collection. Can anyone point me to a source?

Thanks all....

When I made a trip to Avoyelles Parish several years ago, the personnel at the courthouse did allow us to see their records. They were very helpful and my husband and I tried to be respectful in return. We also stumbled upon a small library that actually had good information regarding ancestors I was seeking. If you are planning to spend the night, you might want to make arrangements before you go. There are not many accommodations (hotels/motels) in the area. Also, you will want to be sure to visit the cemeteries. Enjoy your trip.

I am looking for my grandparents, Kirby Bonnette and Neta Saucier marriage records. They were married 23 Jan 1919 in Plaucheville. I would also like to find info on their family. If anyone can give me info on the places I can do research I would appreciate any help.

Christine

Oh my gosh, your Aunt Pearls granddaughter. My mother is Susan or Suzy as your mother, her sisters and Aunt Pearl call her. Our mothers still stay in touch. Nellie was my grandmother.
The only thing is...none of our relatives are on the Dawes rolls of the 5 tribes, that I can find. And they say if they were not registered they will not recognize us. I have not been able to trace Emily Piper very far. I have found an Emily Piper w/father Rufin and mother Sedonia Piper when she was a girl. I associate her with the Emily that I find in the census that married Zenon because she carried the name Sedonia down.

I live in Houston,my email address rdlp_1978@yahoo.com

Allie Abel Desselles was the son of Gervais Duclos. Gervais was of French descent. I am not sure of the mother of Allie Abel. I have been told two different names. One was Elizabeth Charbonneau and the other was Celeste Elizabeth Marcotte. I do know Elizabeth Charbonneau was French and Celeste was most likely of French descent also.

I am almost positive that this is the sister of my Great Grandfather. Her death certificate [transcript found on familysearch] states she was the daughter of Charlie and Mattie Roper Lewis, which were the names of my GG Grandparents. The only problem is that it states she was born around 1885, when I found her on the 1880 Columbia County, AR census at 8 months old. I'd like to see the transcript of her Obituary to look at the survivors and find out where she was buried. She died February 24, 1945. If anyone could find that for me, I'd be eternally thankful!

I am trying to find out exactly what year a particular Bordelon family moved from Hessmer to Bunkie. They lived in Hessmer in 1940 and appear in the Alexandria City Directory by 1945. They moved to Bunkie some time in between living in Hessmer and Alexandria (e.g. Hessmer > Bunkie > Alexandria). Is there a way to verify exactly where and when someone lived in Hessmer and/or Bunkie between the years 1940 and 1944? Other family names related to this family include Gremillion and Dupuy.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Any information would be greatly appreciated on the Jean Relin Family. Jean A Relin was born in Saint Marie aux Mines, Haut Rhin, Alsace, France, December 25, 1862. He was the son of Marie Antoine Reling and Marie Odile Neck. He came to the US about 1880. He was in Avoyelles Parish, LA, on the 1900, and 1910 Census. He married Elizabeth Robinson, December 13, 1887. She was the daughter of William Robinson and Frances Ann Kimball. Jean and Elizabeth had 8 children: Paul, Willie, Neville, Mary Odyle (my great grandmother that married Edward Ambrose Shuff), Ramond, Jean Jr, Joseph, and Aline. Odyle Relin and Edward Shuff had three children: Nellie May, Elizabeth Josephine (my grandmother that married Clinton Luster Biggers), and Emma Mary 'Catherine'. Any information about this family would help my search greatly.

Thanks again, Lisa

The 2000 census was supposed to start recognizing creoles and cajuns on the census forms as a race. Now how it was catergorized later I don't know.

Ghwyr Jorschk, M.D. Now that sounded like a fake name to me, but there is at least one person today in Germany with that surname. And the doctor did say he was going to spend a year in Mecklenburg-Schwerin. But the story is so outlandish that I wonder whether it is a hoax. It concerns a case of a young lady whose body turns to stone in less than an hour after drinking some water found inside a large rock. The woman's husband was allegedly an attorney named Frederick Haller whose office was close to the doctor's in Marksville.
My questions are:

Were there an attorney and doctor by those names in Marksvile in the 1870s? Any information about them?

Anyone able to cite any corroboration or refutation of the story?

You can read the story at
http://UniGen.us/Petrification.jpg (high-res, BIG file) or
http://UniGen.us/Petrification-small.jpg (smaller file)

Pearl Marcotte

I have two old letters written by Pearl Marcotte of Kleinwood, LA and postmarked Bordelonville from the summer of 1918. They were written to my grandfather. The best I can tell, this Pearl was born in 1897 in Bordelonville and had two sisters. My research did not find anything on Pearl after 1918, but I am not a skilled researcher. I want to share these letters with family members if they are interested. My best guess is that her parents were Howard and Rosa Ela, and sisters were Ela or Ena and Ruby.

It seems most often to tally with "could not read or write". They may have been keeping an informal tally of education. Or he may have been noting who was absent at that time. Without notes it would be impossible to tell.

I agree there is no official designation. When looking up some Plauche's I noticed an informal (1) put next to some names and thought that may be what the census taker was using to state something like, "I think I see a slightly darker complexion that white here and one of the two parents also have a slightly darker complexion so the child is not mulatto but not 100% white either". I agree completely with your assumption barbadosdiva.
