Surnames: Paul, O'Neal
Hi and thanks for the land information. Yes, I do believe that this John B. Paul is the same as the person born Jean Baptiste Paul who married Felicite (Felicity) O'Neal and settled in Catahoula Parish, LA. I have seen a number of instances where French surnames were changed to an English spelling for example, LeJeune/Young. Sometimes, I think, this was done by the people so that they would fit in with the new country after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and sometimes I think someone (census taker?) did this for them.
Anyway, I think it probable that someone just put down the Anglized version of Jean Baptiste for purposes of the 1850 census.

The children were William Frank (Franklin in some records), Mary Felony, Manuel, and I think the youngest was Lottie but I don't have these records in front of me and am not sure. My great-grandmother was Mary Felony Paul who married John Thomas Crooks.

P. S. My e-mail provider changed my e-mail address without telling me about it. I think this is all straightened out now.
