For sale.
The plantation of which the subscriber at present resides, situated in the parish of ST.MARY, about four miles in a direct line from the BAYOU TECHE, and containing 530 acres, about 300 of which is high and very rich prairie land, and the remainder nearly all cypress swamp and woodland. There is on the plantation a comfortable dwelling house, sugar house, with a fine horse mill for gringing cane, a corn mill, good negroe quarters, stable and other necessary out-buildings. About 120 acres of the tract are under fence and sixty acres at present in cane.
The terms of the sale are one half cash and the balance on the 1st of MARCH, 1853, with interest at the rate of 8 per cent. per annum.
If it be the will of the purchaser I will sell with the plantation the stock and farming implements now upon it, and will also hire, for one or two years, at a reasonable price, about fifteen good field hands.
Enquire of HENRY C. WILSON, in the town of FRANKLIN, or to the subscriber on the premises.

( MRS. R.L. WILSON- CHRISTINE )
A bound typescript volume on AMITE county in the department of ARCHIVES and HISTORY, JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, yields the following infoemation on RAWLS:
pages 393- "application to and permission granted by the register of the land office west of the PEARL RIVER to the settlers on land ceded the UNITED STATES
LUKE RAWLS, JULY 11, 1807, 160 acres.
Regarding the land on which LUKE RAWLS was permitted to settle in 1807, I am of the opinion that it is the same tract in book of original entries of FRANKLIN county, under the date of 10/1/1816, as entered by LUKE RAWLS, VIZ. the SE 1\4 of sec. 30, twp. 6, RANGE 5 EAST, as mentioned on page 3 of this account of the RAWLS family. A quarter section of land is, if of full size, 160 acres in area, but in some cases it is somewhat smaller- note decrepancy of one acre here. If the several records I have found all apply to the same tract of land, as I beleive they do, then in 1807, LUKE RAWLS was permitted to settle on the land; on 9/1/1816 he formally "entered" the land, having met the requirements imposed by the government; then under date of 1/9/1822 he received from R.R. GRAYSON, reg., certificate of entry ( see FRANKLIN county deed book B, page 163 ). It would be interesting indeed to the original land grant sent to LUKE RAWLS in the name of the PRESIDENT- a document like some of the WILLIAMS land grants now in the possession of MRS. ANNIE WILLIAMS McDONALD of FAYETTE, MISSISSIPPI, and see what date is given in the grant. Fifteen years elasped between the time permission was granted to occupy the land and the receipt of the certificate entry, and it may have been considerably later when he received his land grant as evidence of ownership.
The AMITE typescript swows that ARTHUR RAWLS and CYNTHIA WHITE were granted license to wed FEBRUARY 22, 1859, to them were born WILLIAM GERMANY, 1860, ANNA PAULINE, 1862, CYNTHIA ALICE, 1867, JAMES LEE.....
The AMITE typescript shows on page 31 that SILAS M. RAWLS received license to marry LUCRETIA HAMPTON 1/10/1833. Whether that SILAS was LUKE RAWLS' son of that name is not known. AUNT CAROLINE, in her letter, stated that SILAS ( LUKE'S son, and her own UNCLE ) married BETSY GUICE. However, he may have married a second time, or there could have been another SILAS in AMITE county- a nephew or cousin.
ORIGIN of the name
The name RAWLES or FAWLES ie derived from the FRENCH baptismalname of RAOUL. I.E. RALPH, which was early corrupted to RAWLE. The final S was frequently an abreviation of SON. It was evident, therefor, that the name was first adopted as a PATRONYMIC by the SONS of those who bore the CHRISTIAN name of RAWLE or RAOUL. In anceint ENGLISH and early AMERICAN records the name appears in the various spellings of RAULES, RAULS, RAWELES, RAWELS, RAWELLS, RAWLS, and others. Of these, the last two are the forms most frequently used in AMERICA inmodern times, whilt that immediatly preceeding them is also in evidence.
Early settled in SOMETSHIRE, LONDON, county of CORNWALL, and the DORSETSHIRE, the families bearing this name belonged, for the most part, to the yeoman and merchant classes of the BRITISH ISLES. Although some of the families of the name RAWLE, RAWLS, or RAWLES in AMERICA may have been of CONTINENTAL EUROPEAN origin and ancestry, it is probable that the greater number of the AMERICAN lines tracetheir descent from ENGLISH branches.
In 1635, GEORGE RAWLES was one of the 14 persons brought over to this country by ROBERT BENNETT of NANSEMOND county, VIRGINIA. This GEORGE RAWLES appears in 1639 as one of the " viewers of tobacco crop" in the ISLE OF WIGHT county, VIRGINIA; but his records are not complete.
NOTE : The VIRGINIA tax list, used in lriu of the census of 1790 which was lost when the BRITISH burned the capitol during the WAR of 1812, show the following persons named RAWLS in NANSEMOND CO., ( which lies along the NORTH CAROLINA boundary ): ARTHUR, ANN, DAVID, JAMES, JESSE, JOSHUA, PHILIP and WILLIAM. The NORTH CAROLINA census of 1790 shows in that state : WILLIAM, JAMES, JESSE, JOSHUA, SILAS and PHILIP, while the SOUTH CAROLINA census of 1790 shows : BENJAMIN, ELISHA, JESSE, LUKE, SILAS, ETC. Because of the similarity of names between the RAWLS of MISSISSIPPI and those of VIRGINIA and the CAROLINAS, plus one or two other factors, I have formed a theory that "our RAWLS" ancestors located in VA. and then possibly through several generations migrated southward. However, this is merely a theory and may be wrong. E.J.S.
EUNICE STOCKWELL.
The first AUTHENTIC record on RAWLS is the entry in the BIBLE of ELECTIOUS WILLIAMS of the birth of SARAH RAWLES, his WIFE, JUNE 2, 1797. Next comes the information contained in a letter written by MRS. CAROLINE WILLIAMS FLOWERS ( 1821- 1901 ) to her NEPHEW, FRED WILLIAMS, under the date of DEC. 7, 1900, as follows : "LUKE RAWLS" was my grandfather on my mothers side. He and his wife ( whose name she does not give ) and eight children, MARY, CHARITY, SARAH, ANNIE, NANCE, DAVID, ARTHUR, and SILAS. MARY,who was called POLLY, married EDWARD WILLIAMS, your grandfather's oldest brother. My father married SARAH. Aunt's CHARITY and NANCY married McCALLEYS ( McCAULEYS ?). ANNIE married ( isaac ? bedford, father of JOHN and TOMMIE; ARTHUR married ORPHA BYRD as SECOND wife, and after her death he married a widow WHITE, I beleive;SILAS married BETSEY GUICE. TOMMIE BEDFORD married MATILDA GUICE, and I was bridesmaid." FRANKLIN CO. marriage records show that JOHN BEDFORD and MARY E.GUICE were married DEC. 7, 1835, with ELECTIOUS WILLIAMS on the bond;and that THOMAS BEDFORD and MATILDA GUICE were married MARCH 11, 1837, with ASA J. GUICE on the bond.
In an effort to learn more about the RAWLS family, I wrote to ROBERT ARTHUR ( BOB ) RAWLS of HAMBURG, MISS., who was born in 1841 and died DEC. 14, 1927, and under date of MARCH 8, 1918 wrote stating that the RAWLS family came from NORTH CAROLINA in 1800 and located 12 miles EAST of MEADEVILLE.He seemed to be under the impression that his FATHER, ARTHUR, made the trip.
Records of ARTHUR RAWLS and his family, which have come into my hands within the past few years, give the date of ARTHUR'S birth as 1801, but do not give the place of birth. Thus if ARTHUR made the trip, even as a baby, the family came to MISSISSIPPI territory later than 1800.
HOLLIS RAWLS, a lawyer in COLUMBIA, MISSISSIPPI, wrote me in 1947: " I have your letter, and note that you are a member of the FRANKLIN county branch of the RAWLS family." He went on to say that he had determined from sources which he beleived to be correct that during the reign, or shortly after the reign of CHARLES I, " our ancesters migrated from ENGLAND and originally settled in VIRGINIA. From there one brother went to PENNSYLVANIA, and another to SOUTH CAROLINA and in the vacinity of CHARLESTON, and in 1800 or 1801 SEVEN BROTHERS left SOUTH CAROLINA and migrated westward, hunting, we are told, more fertile lands and furthur elbow room. As each BROTHER would find a green valley to suit his notion he would leave the caravan and homestead, and you will find members of the family in GEORGIA, ALABAMA, and MISSISSIPPI. We do know definitely that FOUR of the BROTHERS reached MISSISSIPPI, one locating in what is known as RAWLS SPRINGS, about five miles NORTH of HATTIESBURG; another, who was my great-grandfather, located on PEARL RIVER, about TWENTY miles SOUTH of COLUMBIA; another stopped in the vacinity of BROOKHAVEN,MISSISSIPPI; and your ancestors settled in the NATCHEZ country, and it is from that branch of the family you spring." favorite names in this branch of the family, he said, are CHARLES, JABUS ( JABEZ ), JAMES and BENJAMIN.
A MRS.RAWLS of SILVER CREEK ( northwest of COLUMBIAabout 26 miles ) wrote me in 1918, in reply to a query, that her husband saidthat over 100 years ago two families named RAWLS came from the CAROLINAS to MISSISSIPPI, one settled on LEAF RIVER, the other on PEARL RIVER. This agrees perfectly with what MR. HOLLIS RAWLS wrote, as HATTIESBURG and RAWLS SPRINGS are on or near LEAF RIVER.
GOODSPEED'S MEMOIRS of MISSISSIPPI " gives BENJAMIN RAWLS,a pioneer in MARION county, as a native of SOUTH CAROLINA. ( COLUMBIA is the county seat of MARION county, MISSISSIPPI.)
METHODISM in MISSISSIPPI, by JONES, vol. 1, page 387, shows "KEZIAH, widow of JABEZ RAWLES (sic), was in 1815, in age and feebleness extreme". Her father, REV. MR. JONES goes on to say, was PETER FELDER from near ORANGEBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA, who settled in what became PIKE county before the war of 1812.
A lady, who in 1948 answered my published query on the RAWLS family, wrote that she thought "the neighborhood of CHARLESTON "was misleading, and in her opion the RAWLS family once lived in the COLUMBIA-CAMDEN-ORANGEBURG and "96" area rather thanCHARLESTON, ( or nearC.). A resident of NEW YORK state, this lady saidthat she was quite familier with the area in SOUTH CAROLINA in which she places the RAWLS family, as one of her parents grew up there and she had visited it many times. She made a tracing of an old map of the state showing early divisions and early localities andenclosed it with her letter. She also enclosed the names of persons named RAWLSin the CAMDEN district, FAIRFIELD county, who were listed in the census of 1790, among them a LUKE RAWLS in the CAMDEN district, FAIRFIELD county, with self and another male over 21 years of age and two females in family.
"Stub entries for the revolutionary war claims", page 234, shows that on JUNE 25, 1785, " MR.LUKE RAWLES" received payment for " provisions and forage for military use in 1781 as per acct.audited".
The name LUKE RAWLS also appears in ROBERTSON county, TENNESSEE, in an inventory of estate by ELIZABETH and LUKE RAWLS, JR., in the house of widow RAWLS 08/30/1800, taken by JOHN STEWART in ROBERTSON county. This county included a large part of upper middle TENNESSEE,at that time, and CLARKSVILLE was county seat.
Publications of the "MISSISSIPPI HISTORICAL SOCIETY", vol. iv,page 489, states that "immediately after the spanish session of the MISSISSIPPI territory (1798) there was a steady tide of immigration, chiefly from GEORGIA, the CAROLINAS, and VIRGINIA, which in ten years swelled the population from 10,000 to more than 40,000, exclusive of INDIANS". Perhaps this sheds some light on the coming of the RAWLS and WILLIAMS families to the MISSISSIPPI territory.
The earliest authentic record for "our" LUKE RAWLS, within the bounds of the state of MISSISSIPPI, is to be found in the ADAMS county marriage records showing that on 5/20/1809 LUKE RAWLS consented to the marriage of ELIZABETH RAWLS to ISAAC BEDFORD. This ELIZABETH has not been identified; and in passing, one notes that FRANKLIN county had been established in JANUARY 1809, so one wonders just where LUKE was residing at that time, ADAMS or FRANKLIN county. ( THOMAS BEDFORD born 2/23/1813).
The census of 1810 shows LUKE RAWLS in FRANKLINcounty with wife, four males, and four females under 21 years of age; while the 1816 census shows one more female under 21- probably another daughter born after 1810. In 1820 LUKE was over 45 while his wife was under 45. SARAH was married, as was undoubtedly her older sister MARY. By inference we feel sure that ANNIE too was married. From records I hold, I am unable to reconstruct the family of LUKE RAWLS.
The early census records show men named RAWLS in AMITE and MARION county, and listed among the men serving in the war of 1812 are BRIANT, CHARLES, JABEZ, JAMES,CLAUDIUS, HARRIS and "our" LUKE.
The earliest land records found show that "LUKE RAWLS entered" in FRANKLIN county 159 acres of land on 10/01/1816, this being the SE 1\2 of SEC. 30, T 6, R 5 EAST;and about a year later ARTHUR ( his son ) entered 79 acres in the same section. ARTHUR was thenonly 16 years old.Alllands aquired by RAWLS in FRANKLIN county are in this locality, out EAST of MEADVILLE, and long known as the old "RAWLS PROPERTY".
Most of the land is now within the HOMOCHITTO FOREST RESERVE, and has grown up in pines; however,MR. SCOTT ( a RAWLS and GUICE descendant )very kindly went with MYRTIS and ME tolocate and point out the old RAWLS CEMETERYon this property. After several attempts he located the site not far from the road, but covered by smallpines and low underbrush. One stone marked the grave of ARTHUR'S wife, ORPHA RAWLS ( 9/27/1805- 1/29/1858), and another the grave of her son, DANIELJ. (10/04/1826- 2/18/1846). No other stones were found of RAWLS.
FRANKLIN county land records show that on 10/22/1822, ALEX RAWLS ( not identified ) received "certificate of entry"on the NW 1/4 of SEC. 30, TWP. 6, RANGE 5 EAST,and just eight days later ALEX conveys this property to LUKE RAWLS, on 12/31/1824 LUKE conveys this same property to ARTHUR, his son, Under date of 6/7/1826,LUKE RAWLS conveyed the SE 1/4 of SEC. 30, to SILAS RAWLS, also his son. After the latter date, only the name of ARTHUR RAWLS appears in the land records, and what became of LUKE is not apparent. In the department of archives and history in JACKSON there are the census records of 1830 on microfilm, but the reader then in use was so poor and so hard on the eyes, that I abandoned using it after a few minute. I hope tolookthrough the listing for LUKE RAWLS and others of the families in which I am interested.
While the census records show that LUKE RAWLS was a resident of FRANKLINcounty in 1810, 1816,and 1820, AUNT SALLIE wrote, " I have always been told that they were married in TENNESSEE", in speaking of the marriage of her grandparents, ELECTIOUS WILLIAMS and SARAH RAWLS. I understand that AUNT ELEANOR FITZPATRICK said that they were married in a "little church in TENN.", the date of marriage being 6/1817. Thus far my searches in TENNESSEE archives has revealed no RAWLS-WILLIAMS marriages. Before turning to other matters, I willmention that the two sons of ANNIE RAWLS BEDFORD were reared by ELECTIOUS WILLIAMS.
ARTHUR RAWLS, who according to his descendants was born in 1801,married _____ McAULLY ( of same family as the men whomarried his sisters CHARITY and NANCY ), who died in about a year. He married, 2nd, ORPHA BYRD; 3rd, a WIDOW WHITE; and 4th, a SARAH LEE;all three left children. His youngest child was born in 1874-just when he died, I do not know.
Much of the foregoing has been copied as a matter of interest, and in all probability some of it applies to the RAWLS family from which came SARAH RAWLS, wife of ELECTIOUS WILLIAMS;however, only the land and census records, and the fact that LUKE RAWLS served in CAPTAIN GREEN'S company ( MAJOR SWAYZES' detachment ? ) constitute official and authentic proof regarding him.
Similarity of names between the children of ARTHUR RAWLS by his 2nd wife, ORPHA BYRD, and those of SARAH and ELECTIOUS WILLIAMS is interesting as will be shown.

AUNT SALLIE SIMMONS, in a letter written in 1946, stated that "UNCLE ARTHUR RAWLS" was her father's uncle and that BOB RAWLS and his sister were his first cousins. She recalled that in her early childhood, an UNCLE ARTHUR RAWLS, came to see her grandfather ( ELECTIOUS WILLIAMS ), and it seemed to her that he had married a third wife. "I think he was a brother to SARAH RAWLS WILLIAMS. He was the father of BOB RAWLS of HAMBURG. There was a sister of BOB'S named MISSOURI RAWLS STRAIT. I knew her son CHARLIE STRAIT, a methodist minister who died this year, wrote AUNT SALLIE, who, like AUNT CAROLINE POWERS, seemed to have known nothing of ARTHUR RAWLS' first wife who died about a year after her marriage, leaving no children.
FRANKLIN county marriage records show that ARTHUR RAWLS married, MARCH 3, 1869, SARAH JANE LEE, at which time AUNT SALLIE SIMMONS was a child of seven years. By this his FOURTH marriage, ARTHUR RAWLS had SUSANNA JANE, 1871; an anfant ________?; and FLORENCE OLIVIA, 1874. MR. C. WEBB JONES, whose wife FLORENCE OLIVIA had died, sent me in 1948 a complete list of allof ARTHUR'S children. MRS. INEZ JONES MILLER of MONROE,MISSISSIPPI, daughter of C. WEBB and FLORENCE JONES, alsosent me some items on the RAWLS family. MYRTIS and I found her and her daughter interested in family, willing to help, and eager for further information on the RAWLS family, when we saw them in 1947.
RAWLS INFORMATION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following came to me from MRS. TOM RAWLS. of BROOKHAVEN, MISSISSIPPI, who had copied it from someone. It belongs to MRS. HUGH SULLIVAN, of PALESTINE, TEXAS, who is anxious to find more information on the RAWLS family, as she is a descendant of that family, and the man who wrote this letter was her GRANDFATHER or GREAT-GRANDFATHER.
Information from HENRY EUGENE BAYLISS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SON of MARY RAWLS BAYLISS
The name COTTON RAWLS I have heard spoken often in my family, and I am certain he was an ancestor of mine. I have met and talked to friends of the RAWLS family wholived in MONTICELLO, MISSISSIPPI, and they have in their possession a more detailed record of the RAWLS family.
My first cousin JOHN ( or JABEZ ) RAWLS died in MONTICELLO, and was buried there at NEW HEBRON.
It is quite probable that a lot of my mother's people were in the REVOLUTIONARY WAR. They came to AMERICA in early colonial time, FRENCH HUGUENOTS fleeing from persecution in FRANCE.
My great-grandfather on my MOTHER'S side came from HOLLAND. They too were fleeing from religious persecution. They and the RAWLS family settled near ABBEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, my maternal grandmother, with her parents, moved west and settled in western GEORGIA, near FT. MIMS, until 27 hours before it was captured. After my grandmother's people left FT.MIMS, they moved west and settled in MISSISSIPPI.
It was there that my MOTHER,MARY RAWLS, and my FATHER, DR. JOHN McCORMICK BAYLISS, JUNE 12, 1856.
My mother's family settled on SANTEE RIVER, northeast of CHARLESTON, about 1685, my mother's family descended from THOMAS RAWLS who was a HUGUENOT from southeastern FRANCE.
The GREAT-GREAT-GRANDSON of THOMAS RAWLS was COTTON RAWLS, who was an officer in GENERAL GREEN'S army. He was, from what I can learn, a non-commissioned officer. His GRANDSON was my GRANDFATHER, BENJAMIN RAWLS, (JR.). B.R.R.NOTE.
My GRANDFATHER settled in MISSISSIPPI, about 1820, at what is known as RAWLS SPRINGS in PERRY county. His WIFE was MARY SLADE, descended from HOLLAND DUTCH, who had settled about the time the HUGUENOTS came to that colony. The name was originally spelled SCHLADDE, ( LOOKS LIKE A DOUBLE D.). They were DUTCH reformed people and were persecuted out of HOLLAND just as GRANDFATHER'S people were persecuted out of FRANCE.
My father's people were originally IRISH. They emigrated to SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, and from there my GRANDFATHER came to this country, near CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, and became a planter, from there my GRANDFATHER, GEORGE BAYLISS, immigrated to MISSISSIPPI territory, and settled on LEAF RIVER. This was about 1820.
( signed ) by HENRY EUGENE BAYLISS
MARY SLADE married BENJAMIN RAWLS,JR., and their daughter was MARY, born OCT. 27, 1835, died OCT. 18, 1918. This was the MOTHER of HENRY EUGENE BAYLISS.

REF: JOURNAL of SOPHIE ( ADAMS ) GOODRUM, JOSEPH'S GRANDDAUGHTER
Dated 1878.
"...JOSEPH RAWLS settled in TENNESSEE...wasted his wife's property and being ENGLISHMEN was a natural ABOLITIONIST." He left his DAUGHTER POLLY ( who later MARRIED JOHN ADAMS ) with HER GRANDMOTHER ELIZABETH KINSALO and with the remaining members of his family, moved to TENNESSEE, lived 2 years in TENNESSEE and then moved to MISSISSIPPI. Before that move, he returned to SOUTH CAROLINA for his daughter. Again from the journal "...GRANDPA JOSEPH RAWLS and family start to MISSISSIPPI, FIVE CHILDREN in number, came down the RIVER in a FLATBOAT- no steamboat invented then- has his negroes and eight horses on board. At CONCORDIA, LA. opposite NATCHEZ he lands and purchases a farm, selling several of GRANDMA'S negroes to make the payment on the farm. This was a pretty place with nice house and large gin. GRANDMA RAWLS loved this place, but GRANDPA was a "rolling stone" and soon took a notion to move across the RIVER into NATCHEZ and settle. GRANDMA RAWLS was opposed to this and would not sign the DEED which is recorded in CONCORDIA. So it stands to this day, 1878."
"While GRANDMA was absent from home, GRANDPA RAWLS was taken very sick and died. HIS BROTHER ABRAM RAWLS, who lived in LOUISIANA came to GRANDPA at this time- has GRANDPA buried- put GRANDPA'S gold watch in his pocket- took all his valuable papers- sold all his stock and furniture- got all the money- mounted GRANDPA'S riding horse- crossed the RIVER leaving GRANDPA'S little CHILDREN alone. No word was sent to GRANDMA and when she came home, she was shocked to know that GRANDPA was dead and everything swept away by HIS BROTHER.
"In her distress, she appealed to the FRY MASONS- GRANDPA had not connected himself with any lodge since he left COLUMBIA, S.C. and not a single MASON made an effort to assist her in any way. GRANDMA was in this way reduced to perfect poverty- by the death of her husband and the rascality of her HUSBAND'S BROTHER."

Legend handed down in this family is that there were originally 3 ( or 4 ) brothers who served in the revolutionary war and only one returned.
