I am trying to verify some old family stories.
In an old recording, my grandmother, Clara (Nance) Lord, stated that she and her sister were the first women to register to vote in Desoto Parish. Are there any records available to verify that?
Secondly, the Nance family lived in a house that was said to have been built along with a cotton gin by a carpet bagger after the civil war. This carpet bagger apparently was buying stolen cotton and was either killed or driven out by a local militia group. My father still remembers the bullet holes in the house. Are there land records that I might be able to verify previous ownership of the house? Are there any service records for local militia?
Any help greatly appreciated.
