I am a fireman here in Baton Rouge acting as a current director of the fire museum here. I have a copy of an "exemption" document from indepence fire co. According to the Pelican hook and ladder by-laws from BR, exempt meant after 7 years of volunteer fire service you were no longer required to serve on jury duty or required to serve in military if a draft was imposed. After 7 years this was a lifetime award but during current service "in good standing those "exemptions" also applied. If it interests you, I may be able to find the log books from that time and perhaps his name registered, also a copy of the "exemption" document. All I ask in return is a brief bio on your ancestor. Just something to tell me who the men serving in the fire service were in those days
