Re: CABLE, RUCKER MS. LA. TX. OK.

James Wyatt Hodge Rucker and Alice Helen (Cable) Rucker had a total of six children, but all I'm aware of are two other boys named Leonard and Wilford. I have no information on middle names, birth or deaths for them. Alice H Cable was enumerated in the 1910 Okmulgee, Oklahoma Census with her son, James Wyatt Hodge Rucker and his family. She was 65 yrs old and it states that she had six children with two living. Our family has papers that Alice Cable wrote to an attorney named J. Bass, in Lake Providence, LA. trying to get a pension from her husbands service in the Civil War. According to these papers written by Alice, James Wyatt Hodge Rucker joined Tom Gaddis's (?) Co. of Calvary in Jan 1860 in Lake Providence. He served six months. JWH Rucker was stabbed by a man named Nick Ingram in John Tomkins drug store, but it doesn't say what year this occured. She states that this stabbing prevented his return to the Civil War, but also states that he later joined the 31st LA Regiment with Capt. James Draughn Co. (Col. James Morrison's regiment.)at Floyd, in Carroll Parish in April 1861. He served until the burning of his cotton on their plantation. It also said that
J W H Rucker was granted a furlow by James Dunn, who was Captain of Co. and returned home to save his property. The papers state that while home, he hired a substitute, by name of D. McRea, giving him $5,000 to serve the entire war (I'm not sure what that means.) It states that in 1871, D. McRea sold the home of J W H Rucker to pay the debt of his services. It also states that the Rucker family lost their Plantation and 8,635 acres due to the Civil War.
James Wyatt Hodge Rucker and Alice (Cable) Rucker were the Grandparents of Nadell Ariadne Rucker, (my Grandmother) who was born June 9, 1899 in Winn, Alexandria, Rapides Parish, LA.. Nadell A. Rucker was a daughter of J W H Rucker, the son of Alice and her husband JWH Rucker. A bit confusing with the same (JWH Rucker) names, but hope it's clear for you to understand.
Alice moved to Texas in her later years and is buried in Luling, Texas. Her son passed away in Fort Worth, Texas.

In 1920 East Carroll Parish 3rd Ward census, dwelling # 386 there is a Mull Estes with wife Virginia. Mull is a game warden. In dwelling # 388 is Thomas H. Estes. Thomas is a farm manager. Mull might be W. M. Estes who married Virginia C.(?Currie/y?) Beard in Carroll Parish in 1873 at residence of I. B. Beard. And Thomas might be son of Mull and Virginia. Anyone know these folks? In 1880 Chicot County Arkansas census, there is William Estes, plantation manager with wife Virginia and sons James, William and Thomas.

I remember when this family (mother, father, 2 young daughters) were hit by a train in Monroe, La, killing all four plus Clayton's sibling and sibs spouse. Two children survived, Neil(Neal)Weems, age about 10 and Carol Weems, age 15. These two became wards of their maternal grandmother,Nita Stovall Nicholson, and were raised by her in Metairie, La. It was on the 4th of July and the year was probably between 1948 and 1951. It was written up in the Morning World/ News Star and later Nita and her husband sued the railroad and won. My mother was Roline Stovall Deloach, oldest daughter of Logan J, Stovall,Dodson,La

If you are searching for information on the various plantations that were in the Carroll Parish area before the Emancipation Proclamation, I have posted all the information I have gathered over the years to one website.

http://www.sankofagen.com/Louisiana#CARROLL

Most of the information attempts to capture things such as number of slaves owned with names, owners, years of ownership, present day locations, etc.

I hope this helps someone trackdown their ancestors last slaveowner.

Is there a cemetery or burial site for the Melbourne Plantation near Transylvania? I am looking for Percy Langham born 1878 and died some time after 1880 and before 1898 in this area. His mother Mrs. C.L. (Ellen) Langham and brother Charlie Langham are buried somewhere near Goodrich landing in 1878 during the yellow fever outbreak. Any help finding dates or burials on them is appreciated.

Maunde Zelle -- What does this mean?

Henry E. Pabst died in Carroll Parish, LA abt 1856. In his succession papers at the courthouse in Lake Providence, I found a document written in old German handwriting. It was a promissory note when he borrowed some money from his brother, John Christian Pabst. The Pabst brothers owned property in what is now the Midway area of Richland Parish, just East of Hwy 17.

The translator thought "Maunde Zelle" could refer to a place name. Is there any place in the area that this could be? How would it sound if it were pronounced?
The document starts" Maunde Zelle, January 20..."

Another phrase which she could not translate was "Berush of Karll." I am wondering if Henry attempted to write "Parish of Carroll."

Monticello comes to mind, but it was some distance from where the Pabst family lived.

Thanking in advance for your ideas.

Shields, Stamboul Plantation and Roosevelt

Can anyone tell me the relationship between the old railroad stop of Stamboul, now called Roosevelt, and Stamboul Plantation--both between Lake Providence and Tallulah? My uncle and aunt, Harry and Jessie SHIELDS, owned Stamboul Plantation, probably from the 1940s to the 1970s; and their house dated back to before the Civil War. Harry was from Kentucky but was in East Carroll Parish by 1930 as a farm manager. He met and married Jessie WALL of Lake Providence. After their marriage they lived in Kentucky before purchasing Stamboul. This account of President Teddy ROOSEVELT's bear hunt in the area, www.rootsweb.com/~lamadiso/articles/roosevelt_moncrief.htm, refers to Stamboul and reports that ROOSEVELT called on Mr. and Mrs. Leo SHIELDS of Stamboul before continuing his journey. I know of no connection between the two SHIELDS families, but it's quite a coincidence. Where is Stamboul Plantation located in relationship to Roosevelt?

I am unsure as to whether Macedonia is, but Ward 5 of East and West Carroll Parishes is in the northern most portion of the parish that is closest to Arkansas.

Records for the period 1850-1870 are located at the East Carroll Clerk of Court Office at 400 First Street in Lake Providence, LA. They are in excellent condition and there is a great staff there to help. Records after 1877 are split by parish.

Based on 2007 Tax Records for East Carroll Parish (http://www.latax.state.la.us/), Airlie (or Arlie as it's spelled in topography maps and tax records) Plantation is located (or partially located) in the following area:

Ward 2, Township 19 North, Range 13 East, Section 46

The original owner of Airlie/Arlie was Dr. James Carson. I found a land patent (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/) stating that he purchased land on November 5, 1852 in Townshiop 19 North, Range 13 East, Section 16, which made up 168 acres.

If you visit http://1webfn.doa.la.gov/slodocs/SLO/hist_search.asp and plug in 19N for Township, 13E for range and then leave the section open, you will get a list of old topography maps to plot out exactly where the land is now. (To view them it requires a download, but it's worth it.) From there using a map now, you can see where about the land is.

Here is also a link to the Carson documents: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/utcah/00382/cah-00382.html

Stamboul Plantation is north of where Roosevelt is in East Carroll Parish. They both lie along Highway 65.

If you use http://www.mapquest.com/maps/latlong.adp, you can plug in their latitude and longitude to get an idea of how far they are apart, which is not a lot:

Stamboul Plantation: Lat: 32.6126360, Lon.: -91.1701093
Roosevelt: Lat: 32.6126360, Lon: -91.1823319

As you can see, they both have the same latitude.

Ironically, my great grandfather served as a guide during Roosevelt's trip to East Carroll Parish. I'm still trying to locate an article that featured him.

Hope this helps!
My grandfather, Thomas Rhodes, owned Airlie Plantation near Lake Providence during the Reconstruction Period. I am wondering what remains of this plantation. Is the main house still in existence? What about the general store? Is some of the property still being farmed?

I also had ancestors living and buried in Macedonia in the 1855-1880's era and and continue to search for records. Do marriage, newspaper, tax, voter, probate, and similar records exist for that period? Is there still a community there? Any churches that go back to that time frame? Thanks for any info.

I am now thinking that my ancestors were living near a settlement called Monticello in 1860--not Macedonia. Would you happen to know if that community still exists, and if so where it is/was located? I'm interested in searching for graves in that area. Thanks for your help. Janell

Macedonia is in West Carroll Parish, west of the village of Kilbourne. The community is still there with a church cemetery. You would need to look under ward 5 of the west carroll census.
