He does have a Find a Grave page, two actually, both with photos of the headstone. The headstone has no dates on it whatsoever, so I'm not sure where the 1924 is coming from.

www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=90690967

www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=82307202
What you have heard is true. Susan Katherine Craft and Spencer M. Smith are first cousins. Susan married Gilford Boswell Turner, brother of Spencer's wife, Sealeta Ware Turner.

What kind of records are you looking for? How can I help?
You may contact me directly, if you'd like: rllunceford@att.net

Rebecca

Rebecca, thank you for the leads on the newspapers. My family line comes through James McDonald Smith (Winn Parish), who is supposed to be Tobias Smith's son and Leah Smith Craft's older brother. I've been told that your g-grandmother Susan was a cousin to Spencer McDonald Smith -- James' son and who married Sealeta W. Turner. I'm trying to find records to confirm this. Thanks again!

Susan Katherine (Craft) Turner is my Maternal Great-Grandmother. I don't have an obituary, but I do have a copy of her Death Certificate. It says she was born Feb. 8, 1850 in Mississippi and died April 23, 1923, Dry Prong, LA, and is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Grant Parish, LA.
Her parents: Whit Craft (William Whitmel Craft) and Lier Smith (Leah Smith). I think the newspapers in 1923 would have been The Colfax Chronicle (Grant Parish) and The Daily Town Talk, Alexandria, (Rapides Parish).
Rebecca Lovell Lunceford
Thank you for sharing this information. Figured I might check newspaper microfiche records the next time I'm in LA. Do you happen to know the names of newspapers at this time (mid 1920's) where an obit might be published?

I am interested in info about Joy Foster Cook. My husband's grandfather was John Foster Cook born 1896 in Sabine Parish, LA. His family was having a hard time and William D and Mary Carter offered to take care of him until they were able to take care of him. They got him when he was two months old. Sometime after 1910 the Cook family wanted him back and by this time the Carter's didn't want to give him back so they moved one night to Texas. The Carter family lived in the same area that William Morris and Amanda lived and I believe went to the same church. Are there any stories about a missing son in the family? Another researcher noted the same middle name and suggested that he might be out of wedlock son of Joy Foster. Thanks, Selida

Hello,

I'm looking for any information on the children of Hiram Seaborn Bonner (1/10/1858-1/17/1936) and his wife Susan Leckie (10/30/1864-7/22/1953) of Grant Parish, LA.

The known children I have are as follows, I would appreciate any information on the spouses and children of the following individuals, especially John Stephen Bonner.

Hiram Alexander Bonner 1888-1975 married Annie Casey
John Stephen Bonner 1890-1947 married ?
Louisa Catherine "Carrie" Bonner 1895-? married ?
William Franklin Bonner 1897-? married ?
Gertrude Daisy Bonner 1900-? married ?
Elisha Lomax Bonner 1902-? married ?
Jefferson Bonner ?-? married?
Susie Bonner 1907-? married ?
Infant Bonner 1887-?
Alice Kate 1893-1910 married ?

Like I said, I am especially interested in any information on John Stephen and his wife and children. I believe this is the same John Bonner found in the 1930 Tacoma, Pierce, Washington Census as "divorced" with a 15 year old daughter named Geneva.

Thanks in advance!

Leslie

Re: JOHN A. CARLISLE FAMILY

Hello Susan,
I don't have a Johnny Carlisle from Bogolusa, LA in my records. Do you know who are his ancestors in MS and where in MS they may have been located? Too little info to know if we are related.

My Carlisle ancestors, Thomas Carlisle, with sons John B. and James Carlisle and their families, came from NC/GA to Lawrence Co., MS before 1820 and settled there. Thomas and son James died in Lawrence Co. in the 1840's. John B. died there in the 1860's. Some of their descendants scattered to other counties in MS, some went to LA, some to AR, some to TX.

I have posted to this message board info on my direct ancestor, John A. Carlisle, (son of John B. Carlisle) and his family in Grant Parish.
John A. left Lawrence Co., MS for LA in the 1840's with brothers, Thomas M., William and James M. Carlisle. Thomas M. and his family settled in Bienville Parish, LA. William and family, James M. and wife, and John A. settled for a while in Claiborne Parish, LA. James M. and wife, Huldah Prestridge, died there (or maybe in Union Co., AR) in about 1859. In the early 1860's, William, wife Sarah, and family moved to Angelina Co., TX; John A., wife Narcissa, and family moved to Rapides Parish, LA, where they are recorded in 1870, then they moved into Grant Parish, LA.

This may not tie in with your Carlisle ancestors at all. Let me know if anything here "rings a bell" and we'll try to investigate further whether or not we might be related.

Best wishes in your search,
Rebecca Lovell Lunceford
My gr-gr grandfather was John or Ed Coutee probably born between 1869 & 1876. From what vague oral history that I have, he died in the late 1940's around Wisner,Franklin Parish, LA. Some say that he was called Ed but his headstone in Central Cemetery says "John Coutee". There is nothing on the headstone other than a name. The headstone next to his says "Liz Coutee". He had one daughter named Annie, born in 1896 near Boyce, LA, who married Oliver (O.C.)Mercer. Annie's mother may have died around the early 1900's and Liz was probably a later marriage. It is possible that Annie had a cousin named Cora Calhoun. I have been unable to obtain any other information or verify the information that I do have. Any scrap of information may be helpful and would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me directly. Thank you! Terry
Loozianagirl@gmail.com

Do you do research at the court house? I know they didn't do death certificates before 1910, but hoping they may still have some records of death. My great grandfather (Anthony Wilkins) died between 1900 - 1910. He is listed on the 1900 census and my great grandmother (Tena Wilkins)is a widow on the 1910 census.
Also I can't find my great grandfather on the 1870 census. He is in Grant Parish on the 1880 census living with an uncle (Wash Brandon)saying he was born in LA and parents born in AL. I found a Thomas Wilkins on the 1870 census with a son about the same age, but name is Esan. I'm sorta thinking this could be him, only because my grandfather's name was Thomas. But I can't find this family after 1870.
We are African American. What is your fee? I would appreciate any help.

lavettaw@yahoo.com

Dianne,

I don't recall seeing a single Facundus in Grant or Winn Parish. But looking at the cemetery records from that area, there is a SARAH A. WEBB (born 1867, wife of Hile Dake) buried in the Winnfield Cemetery. You can see the tombstone on Findagrave....

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=da...;

Perhaps this is the Sarah that you saw, definately not your Sarah.

Have you checked to see if the Live Oak Methodist Church has records of the burials in that cemetery. First burials there were prior to Sarah's death. Perhaps she is in the unmarked grave on row 13 next to her husband J.D. Walton Facundus.

http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/livingston/cemeteries/liveo...

Good luck!
Cheryl

I don't have the exact year when Louisiana marriage license information requirements changed but it was sometime between 1910 and 1915 when applicants began being required to list parents (whether living or dead) and previous spouses. Prior to that, a father's name might appear on a marriage bond or as a witness but was not identified as parent.
Did your person live long enough for a Social Security application? Parental names are required there.

Because of the confusion as to if he was born an Anderson or Brown the death certificate wasn't much help since someone else was giving the info. I figured the correct father's name would be given on the marriage certificate since the groom was giving the info. and would know who his father was.

Thank you for your reply!

Patricia

Have you found an answer to your question yet? If not, you may want to try Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (www.raogk.org). There's a volunteer listed for Grant Parish who takes photos of tombstones.

His name was Robert Lee Torry, and he was my great-grandfather's half brother actually. Torry or Torrey's father i would like to know his name. I have meet one of his relatives one his father's side but they were unable to give me their uncle's name. I know that the Torrey's changed the spelling of the surname after Robert Lee came along. I just dont know which one was his father.
