Interesting, I never thought about if they would have shortened their last name. Gives me another angle to look at for Ciminella.
Just like I found out that Dominica(Anna's)married last name of Sarullo was also later on spelled in the fashion of Sorala,Soralo,Sarolo, etc. I don't know if it was just because no one knew how to spell it when she told them it or she just did not know how to spell it. She was very young herself. Only around 13 or 14 when she got married. Born in 1892 and married in 1906 and widowed in 1909. WOW!!!!!! so I see what you are saying. Also, can you just imagine for the people here having to write their names down for them and trying to understand what they are saying. They speak with a rolled tongue accent. :)

Wonder if it was shorten to just Cimi - cima - cimo - ciminni
I found these spellings in Baton Rouge Diocese Vol 10

Then again it would not be unusual if the spelling was changed or written down the way it sounded not by the way it was spelled, big language problem, the diocese books were translated from scrip hand hand writing which is hard to read if fancy script.

Yeah, my grandma (Dominica Ciminella)also known as (Anna) has been very hard to trace anything on her or her parents (Girolomo Ciminella) and (Maria Cerniglia) other than knowing that they came over from Sicily and lived in Louisiana for a while before Dominica(Anna and her sons moved on to Chicago. I am not sure when they arrived in the United States. Being that they could not speak our language or read or write they used an(x)for their signatures. Dominica and Giuseppe Sarullo were married in February of 1906 and had two son's (Vito(Victor)in 1906 and (James)in 1908 and that supposedly her husband (Giuseppe) died there in Louisiana in 1909. Giuseppes' parents are(Vito Sarullo) and (Rosa DiFalco). I don't know know if my grandma's parents stayed there and passed away there or went back to Sicily or what happened to them. It is like after they arrived here they fell off the face of the earth.

I am looking for information on my family and any help I can recieve will be a blessing. Dominica Ciminella (also known as Anna)born 6 July 1892 and Giuseppe Sarullo born ? (also known as Joseph) married 7 February 1906 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Plaquemine Louisiana. Giuseppe and Dominica had 2 son's: Vito Sarullo (also known as Victor) born 10 November 1906 and baptized 25 November 1906 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Plaqeumine Louisiana and James Sarullo born 27 July 1908. Dominica's parents are: Girolomo Ciminella (also known as James)and Maria Cerniglia (also known as Mary). Giuseppe's parents are: Vito Sarullo and Rosa DiFalco. I heard Giuseppe died in 1909 there in Louisiana but I can't find proof of it. I know Dominica's parents came over from Sicily but I don't know when and I don't know if her parent's stayed in Louisiana and passed away there or moved on to another state or if they went back to Sicily. Nor, do I know where Giuseppe was buried in Louisiana. Any information would be greatly appriciated and means the world to me. Thank You Very Much.
Nancy Matilda Marionneaux was my GGGrandmother. She was the daughter of Marguerite Josephine Kleinpeter and Norbert Alverini Marionneaux. Nancy Matilda Marionneaux married John J Gill, son of Micheal Gill and Jeanne Phillip. John Gill died the same year he married Nacny Marionneaux,1883. They had 1 daughter, my GGrandmother, Nancy Matilda Gill who married Edward Alfred Rhodes. I am searching for any information on the Gills. Michael Gill died in 1855 from yellow fever. He was survived by his wife Jeanne and 4 children. Jeanne was the daughter of James Philipp and Mary McMeneman. The Gills and Philipps were from Ireland and I believe they came to the US in early 1850s. After Michael died Jeanne married James William Billings (dob:28 Apr 1856). I believe they moved to Pennsylvania. I would love any information, pictures, documents, etc. on the Gills, our ancestors, or descendants. (Michael was a map maker and made a map or Baton Rouge and Plaquemine. I can tell you where you can see copies of these.) I am happy to share any information I have with you as well.
Have you tried ordering his death certificate from the state archives? If the person supplying the information knew his parents' names, they should be on the certificate.
From census records (where he was listed as Dill F.), I'm assuming this is him:

Deal F. Pinell
Date of death 5/13/1958
Age 79 years
Place of death - East Baton Rouge Parish
Volume 7, Page 498 - 1958 Statewide Death Records
(I found it here: http://tinyurl.com/LAdeaths)

It's also possible their names might be listed in his obituary. If you don't have a copy, you could try contacting the East Baton Rouge Public Library to see if it's possible to order an obituary for him. If you do that, I'd try the Bluebonnet Branch. Here's their web page:
http://www.ebrpl.com/LocationsandHours/bbr.html
Okay, here's another thought. I found someone's Valega family tree on Ancestry with a photo of his son's headstone, which states that he was a PFC in Troop A 1st Regiment of the Louisiana Cavalry in the Civil War. I checked the State Archives' Confederate Pension database here:
http://www400.sos.louisiana.gov/archives/gen/cpa-alpha.htm

There are 2 records for him and 2 for his wife. I don't have personal experience with Confederate pension records, but when my great-great grandmother applied for her husband's Union pension, she had to supply quite a bit of documentation. It's worth looking into.

By the way, Nicholas (the son), was married to Marie Patricia Doize in New Orleans in January of 1880. If you want to order his marriage license from the state archives, tell them his name and give them this information: Orleans Parish Marriage Records, 1880, Volume 7, Page 106. According to his obituary which ran in the 3/10/1904 New Orleans paper, Patricia (as she was called) was his second wife and was a native of New Orleans.

Hi to all,

I am relatively new to doing ancestral research and really new to learing of this 6th gr. grandfather. His name is Nicola Valaga/Valega and was born in Italy in 1807. I have found records showing that he came to US about 1829 and can't locate any info. on him except tax records from 1850's in Iberville Parish and the 1860 Fed. Census where he was married to Eugenie ? (b. in LA about 1802) with 3 children: Nicola, Jr., Celestine and Augustine in Plaquemine, Iberville Par., LA. How can I go about finding additional info. on him and his wife's maiden name? I have done searches for his name on the federal 1830/40/50 Census' and can't come up with anything matching his name in LA or USA. Any help on my next step and thanks for the advice.

I found information that John H. Impson was born 1847 in Pike Co. Ms. and if that is so than Benjamin could be his father because Benjamin was born 1822. But, I also have information that John was born 1832 or 1833 which would have make it impossible for Benjamin to be his father. Confusing. So, am still trying to find information on Temperance and John Impson being his parents.

Dianne

Hi Dianne,

Good news! I just found in the LDS records that John Henry Impson and Rebecca Garrison had a daughter named Temperance Impson who died on 9/17/1866 in Livingston Parish. She was probably born between Mary and John or she could have been a twin to John if she died shortly after birth.

This looks good for John and Temperance Harris being the parents of John Henry.

Cheryl
