You might try getting in touch with the library and ask if they have a 1978 newspaper obituary for Blanch Butler Elliott in their newspaper files. The obituary may have the info that you need on Francis Elliott Kennedy.

There is a marriage record for a Francis Elliott in 1945 gives vol date page # in Jefferson co. Alabama does not list name of groom, if you think this is her, it's possible you can probably order it online at Alabama vital records..
good luck

I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to reply to your message. Was out of town ... and just plain unorganized after my return.
The problem for me is ... I don't know for sure what/who I'm looking for. I used the name Daubert because it seems the closest derivative (in New Orleans) to Dorbrette I could come up with. I know three Dorbrette names for sure, and that all of them originally settled in New Orleans: David Dorbrette (only know he moved on to St Tammany), my gggrandmother's sister Adaline Caroline Dorbrette (b. about 1837) married a Nixon and then Edmund Booth, and my gggrandmother Mary M. Dorbrette (b. 1831) who married a Dowty and then Edmund Booth after her sister died.
If you have any information or research direction you could offer - it'd be greatly appreciated! I'll continue researching what I can ... see if I can provide better information.
Thanks!
Kathy

Thank you so much for responding - and thanks too for the website links!

It does make sense ... the name change "Daubert" to or from "Dorbrette". Will try to track further. Between court house fires and undocumented life steps ... not always an easy task.

I do have a copy of the marriage certificate for my gggrandmother and gggrandfather Mary and John ... but didn't know where they were married. Centering on New Orleans should help some.

Thanks again! Kathy

I think like some ancestors that carried double names, one family would drop one or the other surname, without any legal documentation, guess back then it was a family decision, not the court decision to permit you to change your name.
Whether you will find any actual documentation of the name change probably would be somewhere in the orleans parish court system if they kept records.
Good luck in your search
http://nutrias.org/spec/speclist.htm

Just as an FYI, I found reference to a Thelma K. Noble in Baton Rouge. According to her mother's obituary, however, the K stood for her maiden name of Kennedy.

I'm not connected to this line, but here is what I've managed to find.

In his marriage to Thelma Willis in New Orleans, LA., he is listed as Philemon McKenzie Noble.
*********************************************************
Year Month Bride Groom Parish
1936 5 WILLIS, THELMA & NOBLE, PHILEMON MCKENZIE--- Orleans
Page: 3906 Volume: 53

*********************************************************
You can get a copy of the marriage record by mail from the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge, LA for the cost of $5.00. Here is the website which has the form that you can print out to order the marriage record. The archives mailing address is listed on the form.
http://www.sos.la.gov/Portals/0/archives/pdf/LF3&LH8Publ...

Make sure that you give them the page number and volume number when you order the marriage record. The marriage record should give you their parents names and places of birth.

In your posting, you gave his birth year as 1901, but I looked at the 1910 Macon Co. Alabama census for T.A. Noble and there is no listing for Philemon Noble in the family. He is, however, listed in the 1920 Macon Co., Alabama census in the family of a Thomas A. Noble.
Question about an occupation in 1860s

An ancestor of mine lived in New Orleans from the 1840s until about 1870. Initially, he made his living as an innkeeper/tavern owner. But starting in the 1860s, city directories and tax assessments give his place of occupation as "intelligence office." At first, I thought this might have had something to do with espionage during the U.S. Army's occupation of New Orleans, but that doesn't seem very plausible.

Could there have been an alternate meaning for "intelligence" in that era? Perhaps his office dealt with customs/cargo/shipping issues? This is only a guess, since he lived very close to the river, first on St. Peter, then Conti.

I'm hoping someone can shed light on this topic for me. Thanks.

Hoping someone can help me. GGgrandmother MARY M. DORBRETTE (b. 1831)lived in New Orleans and St Tammany. (Married a DOWTY. Her sister Adaline (b. 1838) married a NIXON, then a BOOTH.) Believe it's possible some of DORBRETTE family changed the spelling of last name from DAUBERT - but I can't find any documentation confirming. DAVID DORBRETTE (could be Mary's father?) married NANCY JOINER 1830 in St Tammany, and additionally DAVID DORBRETTE witnessed the marriage of George Hughes and Mary Joiner 1830 in St Tammany.
Thanks for any help you can give!!!
We are searching for information on this ship which arrived Dec 1851 in the port of New Orleans, from Le Harve, France. We haven't been able to find any information about the ship or the ship's registry, but later naturalization records say this is the ship the Martz family (Stephen, Victoria, Louis and Edward) traveled to America. The family was German speaking, but left from Alsace-Lorraine, then in France. Any insight and assistance is welcome.
