Hi Maggie,

Just saw this thread. I have a Samuel Hopewell, (merchant) in my tree. He married an Emma Matilda Arnall on the Island of St. Helena on the 29th May 1840. Could this, in fact, be your Simon Hopewell? Emma Matilda's maiden name was Arnall She was a twin and was born in Redruth, Cornwall, England in 1815. Her father George Arnall was also a merchant and born in Lantgeglos, Corwall.

It appears that the Hopewell family were merchants in St. Helena as there was also a Hopewell Company trading on St. Helena for a time. Many of the residents of St. Helena left the Island after 1833 when it was taken over by the British Government from the old Honourable East India Company and quickly went into recession.

Events don't change only the places and dates!!

Hope this was of some help. My main interest is with the Arnall family of Cornwall and Lancashire in England, also in Burma (Myanmar) and Australia.(My mother's side). I have lots on the Arnalls so feel free to contact me if you want. Do please let me know if your see all this.

Bob Needham in sunney Australia.
