I am trying to find where Sarah Adeline Webb Facundus is buried. She was born 9-17-1868 in St. Helena Parish, La. and died 1-10-1897. She married John David Walter Facundus born 4-4-1866 in Gillsburg, Ms. and died 9-29-1946 and is buried in the Live Oak Methodist Church Cemetery in Watson, La. Sarah died at a young age and John David Walter Facundus remarried. I found information where F.D.W. Facundus and I am wondering if that is probably J.D.W. Facundus, bought Lot 34 in Greensburg Cemetery and it does not have a headstone on it and was wondering if Sarah could be buried there. Does anyone know who I could get in touch with to find out who is, if anyone is, buried in Lot 34. Thanks in advance for any help. John David Walter and Sarah Adeline Webb Facundus are my Great Grandparents.

Dianne Snyder Rutherford

Hi Maggie,

The man you are looking for is actualy Samuel Hopewell of Samuel Hopewell & Co., St. Helena merchants. He married Emma Matilda Arnall in St. Helena in 1840. Emma Matilda was born in Redruth, Cornwall in 1815 and was a twin with Lydia Staughton Arnall. Emma Matilda was the daughter of my ancestor George Arnall b. 1775 in Lanteglos, Nr.Camelford in Cornwall. As you can imagine all of the Arnalls were associated with tin mining.

Transcript from the 1840 (Marriages) West Briton Newspaper:-
On the 19th of May Last, at the Island of St. Helena, Samuel HOPEWELL, Esq., merchant, to Emma Matilda, youngest daughter of the late Mr. George ARNALL, of Redruth.

For some reason the Arnall family wanted to keep the Hopewell name alive and used it as a Christain name quite often in successive generations. For example there was a Caharles Hopewell Arnall born in Truro in 1869 and a George Hopewell Arnall born in Sydney, Australia in 1895

Cheers for now
Bob Needham in Oz

Not Dr. Perhaps Pierre or Pr.

This guy was barely 20 and courting with Farm Girls so likely not a Doctor.

[Dennison or Duasonne] Due a Son? Menonville
(There was a Menonville who existed in that area at that time who was this age - born about 1798) This person departed from and arrived in France, then shortly after Marrying about 1824. This was an arranged marriage.
(as apposed to a Forced) Nancy Minoville.

There was no Minoville in any census or record set but there was many french Menonville who lived in that exact area before the louisianna purchase, around the civil war they most all returned to france with thier property "and slaves" for fear of loss.

Ammeial (Dudmus?) de Minoville.

This person's full name was Pierre Lois Narcisse Amehel Menonville

S0 I think it was him...
IE Dr = Pr.
Ammeial=Amehel
Minoville=Menonville

Shown in transportation records departed at the time the child was an Infant.

The father was french from Bettancourt-la-Longue which happens to be near a german bordering area.

IE mother is German.(shown in records as mother german)

Ie he fits the profile almost exactly.

The guy was young, who married/impregnated an american, a french citizen who right after the loisianna purchase in 1803 was forced home when france no longer had ownership, abandoning her and the child, moving on, remarrying and living in france.

Name: Louis MENONVILLE
Gender: Male
Place of Origin: Sermaize
Age: 26
ans Father: Louis MENONVILLE (defunt)
Mother: Marie-Suzanne DENOIRJEAN
Spouse's Name: Sophie-Palestine REGNAULD
Spouse's Place of Origin: Maurupt
Spouse's Age: 22 ans
Spouse's Father: Charles REGNAULD
Spouse's Mother: Marie-Anne DROLLET
Marriage Date: 15 nov. 1824
Marriage Location: Maurupt-le-Montois

1806 Passenger Manifest: Menonville, Louis N A
Age about 8.
Desitnation Pointe Aux Ces Le Gouffre

Which sounds like the same guy, perhaps moving to Louisiana owned by france with his dear family only to find,, whoops, they sold it. But the family stayed a while anyway, and then... they didnt.

This is all I can come up with. This guy, It might be him, i think it is, it all fits together like a puzzle. But All I really have is circumstantial except I do have the DNA evidence (paid for the geneology dna test) now that proves this guy whoever he was in regards to my direct linneage was in fact french or german.

What do you all think? I wish I could see the original text for this to confirm what it might say. Image etc. But for now, I am going to go with this.

"Passports of Southeastern Pioneers" has a passport issued to William Allen and John Smylie in 1809.

I have tracked down most of Lawrence Miller's Military career and determined he was German....You can find my research at Ancestry.COM under tmiller230 public source. Lawrence or Lorentz (German). I believe his Dad, Lorentz Miller (Muller) came over in 1743 but need to confirm. Still trying to locate married records to Hannah and local records in VA and PA....He served on the Virginia Line initially in the 8th Virginia Reg called the German Reg. He volunteered for the 3rd light dragoons and basically reached hero status given his action. I'm looking St Helena records.

v/r Terry

Children Lucinda Lindsey married Samuel Newman and they lived in Amite County, MS until Lucinda died before 1850 Census and Sam and kids are living with father in St Helena. Samuel married a Louisa before 1860 Census and was back in Amite. Anyone have information on the families. There is a succession on file for either Isaac, Lucinda, and Samuel that I would like to look at.

In 1836, an abstract of conv. Bk. E p. 484 has Catherine Nichols, Nancy Miller, and Margaret Jones; heirs and representatives of Mary Gorman set over to Thomas Gorman their rights and interest in land on the Tickfaw river in St. Helena Parish. This land was set over to Mary Gorman by Elizabeth Gorman on March 18, 1816.

I am a descendant of Kemp, Williams, Staples, and Foster families and do have most of their Gorman connections.

Contact me direct at donadunn@sbcglobal.net if you would like to pursue further.
Bonjour,
Don Dunnington

Anybody else researching the various Gormans in St. Helena Parish in the early 19th century?

There seem to be a lot of men with the same few given names; trying to sort them all out is giving me a headache.

Gormans I'm especially interested in:

David Gorman who married Rebecca Kemp. He was an early comer to Washington Parish, and moved over to St. Helena Parish by about 1813. He may have been from South Carolina.

Thomas Gorman. There's one who married Artemecia Staples Williams in, I think, 1847. There's another (or, could be the same man) who is the son of
David & Rebecca Gorman. There's a Thomas Gorman who was a contemporary, in age, of David Gorman. There is at least one more Thomas Gorman, but he's a bit younger (born in the 1840s) than the Thomas Gormans I am researching.

Elizabeth Gorman - she was murdered by a slave in St. Helena Parish in 1837 or 1838. This slave was caught, tried, and executed. A Thomas Gorman received compensation for the economic loss of the executed slave. Is this yet another Thomas Gorman? Was Elizabeth his wife? Mother? Sister? The daughter of Thomas Gorman and Artemecia Staples (Harriet Gorman) inherited the land that this Thomas Gorman held under the name of Elizabeth Gorman. I can find no marriage or any other record that ties this Thomas Gorman and Elizabeth Gorman together.

Does any of this ring a bell for anyone?

Hello.
I have just recently found out that I have two Great Grand Mothers that have come from St Helena.
One of them is Elizabeth Susan Reid. Who at some time in the mid to late 1800's immigrated to South Africa and then married a Schmidt. She later amended her name to Smit. After becoming a widow, she married again to Johann Sitzer.
I have not been able to find any information online regarding any "Reids" in St Helena so it was great to see the name pop up in this inquiry. I would love to know if I could get more information for Elizabeth Susan Reid in St Helena.

I am searching for any information on the Sanders line, particularly Richard Sanders b. Feb 18, 1845 in Jasper County, MS and d. Dec. 24, 1923 in Pine Grove, St. Helena. He is listed on death certificate as being buried in Frazier Cemetery. He had a son, Andrew Jackson (Jack) Sanders, who is my great-grandfather and was born on June 28, 1881 in Greensburg, LA and died January 21, 1947. He is buried in Denham Springs in the big cemetery between Range Road and River Road. On the death certificate his parents are listed as Richard and Betty Sanders.

I believe that Richard Sanders had a brother, Henry and that both fought in the Confederate Army, but again I have no definitive proof. ANY information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Maggie,

Just saw this thread. I have a Samuel Hopewell, (merchant) in my tree. He married an Emma Matilda Arnall on the Island of St. Helena on the 29th May 1840. Could this, in fact, be your Simon Hopewell? Emma Matilda's maiden name was Arnall She was a twin and was born in Redruth, Cornwall, England in 1815. Her father George Arnall was also a merchant and born in Lantgeglos, Corwall.

It appears that the Hopewell family were merchants in St. Helena as there was also a Hopewell Company trading on St. Helena for a time. Many of the residents of St. Helena left the Island after 1833 when it was taken over by the British Government from the old Honourable East India Company and quickly went into recession.

Events don't change only the places and dates!!

Hope this was of some help. My main interest is with the Arnall family of Cornwall and Lancashire in England, also in Burma (Myanmar) and Australia.(My mother's side). I have lots on the Arnalls so feel free to contact me if you want. Do please let me know if your see all this.

Bob Needham in sunney Australia.

I really appreciate your reply and certainly didn't expect it within minutes!!
I made a trip to St. Helena courthouse in 1973, but was so new to genealogy and had such a limited time there.
I've collected much on this hard-to-search family since then, but still know absolutely nothing about Elizabeth and her husband Benjamin. A "cousin" said he saw that a Benjamin Wells witnessed a deed in St. Mary Parish in 1826; that's where Alexander Rigby Splane (another brother of Elizabeth) practiced law, but we don't know if it was the same Benjamin. When Thomas Splane, Sr. made application for pension due for his service in the Revolutionary War, he said that he and his wife no longer lived together, but that the wife lived with their daughter, Elizabeth Wells, in St. Helena Parish. That application was dated 4 Sep 1826, so Elizabeth was still alive at that time; I know nothing more about her. Would really be interested in knowing if they had children, their death date, etc.
I've done research on my families and those of my husband since about 1971 and still love to find out some new fact about all those people!
Thanks again for your reply.

Charlotte Tucker

There are extensive legal records in St. Helena Parish, LA on the Wells family. Benjamin is the brother of Ruth Wells who married Samuel Lanier of my Lanier family. He is the son of 2nd wife of John Wells of Georgia, who died 24 Feb 1815 in St. Helena Parish, LA. He married (1) Jane Duhart [DeWitt?] Abt. 1785 in GA. He married (2) Susannah Y. Boykin Abt. 1790, daughter of William Boykin and Rachel. She was born in of Burke County, GA, and died 1846 in St. Helema Parish LA John had 10 children with his first wife and 6 with 2nd wife.

Father of Elizabeth, Thomas Splan gave consent in the marriage of April 20, 1817. In the 1816 succession of Sarah Flanagan in 1816, on 30 Dec.1816 Peyton Splane a son-in-law of decd, tract of land on W bank of Darlings Creek deeded by the Gov. of Baton Rouge [Spanish] West Florida to Ann Splane and Isiah Flanagan, only heirs of Sarah Flanagan.

In the 1816 succession of William Lee Sr., Peyton Splane is named as married to granddaughter of William Lee, Sr.
Ann Flanagan, wife of Peyton Splane is dau of Sarah mentioned above.

A decades-long search hasn't revealed anything about one of my ancestor's sisters, Elizabeth Splane, who married Benjamin Wells, Apr 1817, St. Helena Parish. I don't know anything more about them except Benjamin was probably s/o John Wells and wife Susannah of St. Helena Parish. This Benjamin may have been the same as witnessed a deed in St. Mary Parish in 1826. Any information appreciated. Thanks.
Charlotte Tucker

Did Diocletian Davis, St. Helena, LA, m. d/o John Kent, E. Feliciana, LA?

Robert Parker posted the following message to the St. Helena Parish, Louisiana USGenWeb site Queries 2001-2002:
******************************
http://theusgenweb..org/la/sthelena/query4.htm

Robert Parker February 18, 2001
Following are the ST Helena surnames that I am researching: Parker, Davis, Hooper, Kemp, Womack, Henderson, Harrell, Kent, Kendrick, Fluker, Sharkey, Sessions. (Henderson, Harrell, and Kent were all East Feliciana families who married into one of the above St Helena families. Mary D. Harrell married John Bailey Kent whose daughter Missouri Ann Kent married Dio C. [Dioclesian] Davis. Missouri Ann Kent had a brother, Thomas H. Kent. The estate of Mary D. Harrell and John Bailey Kent was probated in St Helena. I have a copy of it. Middleton Gasden Henderson married Permelia Ann Womack of St Helena. Their daughter Johanna married John Bailey Davis.)--- Robert Parker---
*******************************

Unfortunately, Robert's e-mail address is no longer valid. Therefore, I'm posting this reply in hopes that Robert will find it and contact me.

I descend from the KENT family of East Feliciana Parish. With Robert's above leads, I compared recent findings on the Web against my 1977 research notes from LDS films of parish records. Based on considerable circumstantial evidence, I have concluded that the subject Diocletian C. Davis LIKELY married daughters of John Bailey Kent and Mary D. Harrell: (1st) Elvira Eliza J. Kent on 31 OCT 1848 in E. Feliciana Pa., LA and (2) Missouri Ann Kent on 8 FEB 1852 in St. Helena Par., LA. Details of my research can be seen starting with my RootsWeb World Connect database page for Diocletian, linked below:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

If you have any info that supports or disproves my above conclusions, please post a reply and/or contact me directly.

Thomas M. Bell

For years I have been searching for information on Thomas M. Bell. Thomas married Euphrosine Lambert d/o Joseph Lambert and Theosite Vicknair on Feb 6, 1823 (it was a civil marriage), which leads me to believe that Thomas was not Catholic. Thomas first appeared in the 1830 census of St. Helena Parish with his wife and children. The census states he is from Virginia, occupation as a lumberer and estimates his year of birth as 1777. His children include 1) Mary Virginia bn. c1823 d. 2/5/1907 2)Thomas M. Bell, Jr. bn.1825 3) Mary Celeste (my Great-Great-Great Grandmother) bn. 3/27/1827 m. Francois Silvany Guedry 4)Joseph bn. 4/28/1829 5)Odile Marie bn. 5/1/1831 d. c1859 6) Jean bn.2/28/1832 7) James Ripley bn. 6/17/1835 d. 12/5/1921 8) twins Marie Pauline and Paul Joseph bn. 1/25/1839 9) Marie Elodie bn. 12/7/1841. Thomas and his family can be found in later census records living in Livingston Parish. Thomas died 1/3/1862 in Livingston Parish. When I was a boy, my grandmother told me stories of how we were part Irish, so I am going on the assumption that Thomas may have been living or born in Virginia but possibly could have been born in Ireland and immigrated to Virginia. I have been also trying to connect him to possibly receiving a military land grant after the War of 1812 or maybe he came with a lumbering company to St. Helena. Any help would be much appreciated, this line has been a mystery to me for many years.

Doctor James Henry George was born 1812 in GA. He married Kesiah Augusta Newsom, daughter of Moses Newsom and Martha Singleton. She was born 07 Jun 1826 in LA.

Dr. Joseph Travis George was born 03 Apr 1823 in Of Troop County, GA, and died 25 Oct 1867 in St. Helena Parish [now Tangipahoa], LA. He married Rhoda Frances Newsom, daughter of Moses Newsom and Martha Singleton. She was born 10 Mar 1830 in Louisiana, and died 16 Jan 1920 in Tangipahoa Parish, LA.

The two George individuals above are probably related as they married sisters. I have not been able to connect them to their parents.

James H. and J. T. George are listed together as purchasing items from the estate of Sarah Hughes in 1852 and they are both among those listed in the succession of Moses Newsom in 1853 in St. Helena Parish, LA.

There are probably two George families in St. Helena and Tangipahoa Parishes. The other is John George, my ancestor,

John8 George, Sr. (William7, Nicholas6, Nicholas5, Nicholas4, Nicholas3, William2, Richard1) was born 01 Mar 1746/47 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia, and died Oct 1823 in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. He married Frances Freeman, daughter of Holman Freeman and Sally Cox. She was born 13 Jun 1756 in Amelia County, Virginia, and died 1835 in St. Helena Parish, LA.

Don
donadunn@sbcglobal.net
On the Succession of Mary Lee, the Parish Judge that signed it on 5 Feb 1869 was James H. George. I am trying to find more information about James H. George. I have him listed on the 1860 and 1870 Census as living in or near Greensburg and being married to Keziah George. I also found him on the 1860 Slave schedule. In the 1850 Census he is listed as having several members of the Lambert family living with him. Maybe Keziah's family??? Any info would be great! You can e-mail me at garyandtia@hotmail.com.
Thanks,
Tia

I am researching a road in Dulwich (Ildersly Grove) where your ancestors lived in 1881. Mrs Mary Peterson nee Hopewell was there with some of her children but not her husband. Do you have any information as to why they were in Dulwich? Quite a few people connected with the British Raj lived in the road at that time (about 14% of the residents) Any information about their time in India or St Helena would be helpful too.
