Hello Nelson,

My family is from Dominica (aka St.Dominic). The name shows up as Alcindor (French) or (British). This isle was actually in possession by both. I was told that one of my ancestors named Jaybez settled from Martinique. So, I visited there and found a town called St. Pierre loaded with Alcindors. The tallest buried in the 80's was 7'2. My own grandfather was 6'8. My ancestor migrated to Dominica following that huge volcano that devastated much of the island.

There's more. The name was created. My family story is that it was "Agodo" which means "like a lion.". I was told that to this day, this group of Nigerians is Igbo. Not sure of the accuracy because Mr. Jabbar mentions French ancestors and a Yoruba heritage. He said his grandad spoke it and was 6'8.

There was a lot of migration to Louisiana in the early 1900's from the West Indies and I've seen our name a lot. Dominica, Martinique and Haiti! The name is there to this day. There seems to be some common ties to the French, the slavery, the height and the link to Nigeria. I hope this helps a little. I'll look a little closer at your ancestor. We are probably related.
