I did not see a marriage for Joshua listed in the SouthWest Louisiana Records.
You could try the clerk of court office in St. Landry Parish. And, they could tell you if they have a marriage record for him. (337) 942-5606. If there is a marriage record on file for him, you can inquire about having it mailed to you, if you are not within driving distance.

I am looking for the marriage of Joshua(Josh) Cook to Alma last name unknown. This is what I found:

1900 census Police Jury Ward,St. Landry Louisiana:
Josh Cook(30),wife Alma(28),,sons Frank(7),Aury(5),Ben E(3),and daughter Celeste(baby)
marrid 12 years on the census

1910 census Marshall,Harrison,Texas
In this census Josh and Alma and kids are in living in Texas.

My question is since they were in St. Landry in 1900 do any one know where black marriages took place around 1888. I would like to know Alma's maiden name, that's why I'm looking for this record. I don't know Josh or Alma's parents names or siblings. I do have three of Alma's kids death certificates but none list her maiden name.I could not find a death certificate of Joshua(Josh) Cook.

I would appreciate the help from anyone.
Thank you in advance

I did not see any siblings listed for her. I'll double check to make sure, and try entering the spelling in various ways, just incase it was misspelled.

I did see a few John's listed too.

You can obtain a copy of her baptismal record through the Lafayette Diocese. Since birth records were not available back then, her baptismal record will be the only evidence of her birth. If I recall, the Lafayette Diocese charges $10 per copy.
http://www.diolaf.org/index.cfm?load=page&page=154

Her baptismal record was listed in the book, Southwest Louisiana Records.
I did not locate an obituary for him. But, you can order his death certificate through the Louisiana Archives, for $5 per copy. Or, you can pick it up for 50 cents per copy, uncertified. His place of burial will be listed on the certificate. If he died in Opelousas, and you want an obituary, you can go to the Opelousas Library, and look through the microfilm, to see if there was an obituary printed for him. Most of St. Landry Parish obits are not printed in the larger papers that are available online.

Hello! I've been researching my great-great-grandmother, named Mary Lucille Dorsin, but can't find her birth record anywhere on Ancestry! I found her on the 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 censuses (listed as Mary Lafleur, married to Willie Lafleur), as well on the Social Security Death Index (listed as Mary D. Lafleur). She was born on May 20, 1888 somewhere, at first I thought Louisiana, but I just don't know anymore. But I do know for sure that she died in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish on June 15, 1966. I've been told that she was part Native American, as well. Her mother was Alice John, father Alexandre Dorsin. I have found no records of their existence. I have yet to see a marriage record, or even a birth record of their daughter (Mary). Basically, I can't find any hint of her childhood. I'm beginning to think that she lived on a reservation, or out of the US. Is anyone here related to the Dorsins, or have any tips? I've attached a picture of her, if that helps.

Re: Major Donato Bello native of Corand, Kingdom of Naples, Archdiocese of Naples, m. Suzanne Moreau

There is something wrong with the St. Landry Probate Record (95) for Donato Bello as quoted in the previous post by Rosie Morein Wells.

In that record it states that Suzanne Moreau, wife of Donato Bello, was "the d/o Joseph Valentin Moreau & Marie Jeanne LaFleur." But, Joseph Valentin Moreau did not marry Marie Jeanne LaFleur until about 1749. Harry James Moreau (the expert on the Moreau family genealogy), in his 8-volume book "Avoyelles Connections," lists the eleven children of Joseph Valentin Moreau & Marie Jeanne LaFleur, and lists "Susanne" as the eleventh and last child. If she was the eleventh child, then she could not have been born much before 1765, making her way too young for a 1765 wedding to Donato Bello. Even if she was the first child of Joseph Valentin Moreau & Marie Jeanne LaFleur, and was born in 1750, she'd be about 15 years old at her 1765 wedding to Donato Bello.

However, Joseph Valentin Moreau had a niece who was also named "Susanne Moreau," who was the daughter of his older brother, Louis Moreau II. Louis Moreau II & Marie Catherine Aide-Crequi married in January 1743 and had three children that we know of. One of these was a Susanne Moreau, who, according to the genealogist Harry James Moreau, was born "about 1749," and he states that she was the wife of Donato Bello. She would have been about 16 years old on the date of her marriage to Bello.

The question is this: Did the record identified as "St. Landry Probate 95" actually give the names of the parents of Susanne Moreau, the widow of Donato Bello, as it shows in the earlier post? OR were these names inserted by an overzealous researcher, who mistakenly confused the two women, first cousins, who were both named Susanne Moreau.?

It turns out that Joseph Valentin Moreau and his family did settle in St. Landry Parish, and he died there in 1782. So, it was a logical mistake for someone, at some point in time, to assume that he was the father of Donato Bello's wife, especially since Joseph Valentin Bello also had a daughter named "Susanne."

I don't have a copy of Donato Bello's original probate record from St. Landry Parish. But, if anyone else does, I'd love to see it.

His name was Valery Louis, born in 181-1820, married to a Sallie Chambers. I would like more information on Valery Louis (parents), and Sallie Chambers. My great grandmother was Florida Louis of Rosa, Louisiana and her grandparents were Jack Chambers and Lizzie Chambers. I cannot find Jack or Lizzie Chambers in any records.

Dear Vernisha:

Here is your widowed Odessa Simon, in 1940, in Alexandria, Louisiana. Living with her are her children: Leroy and Ida Mae Simon, and Glaffey (Simon) Belton, who is married and has two children: Willie (Jr.) and Cleveland Belton. Glaffey was living in Oklahoma in 1935(37). Here are the LDS web addresses for this census record. It may also be on Ancestry, but I didn't look, yet:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-27770-1777-45?...

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VY5W-FYP

Odessa Simon, "United States Census, 1940"

name: Odessa Simon
event: Census
event year: 1940
event place:
Alexandria, Police Jury Ward 1, Rapides, Louisiana, United States
gender: Female
age: 35
marital status: Widowed
race (original):
race (standardized): Negro
relationship to head of household (original):
relationship to head of household (standardized): Head
birthplace: Louisiana
estimated birth year: 1905
residence in 1935: Same House
enumeration district number: 40-16B
family number: 107
sheet number and letter: 5A
line number: 28
nara publication number: T627
nara roll number: 1441
digital folder number: 005454559
image number: 00680

HOUSEHOLD
head
Odessa Simon F 35 Louisiana
son
Leroy Simon M 17 Louisiana
daughter
Ida Mae Simon F 14 Louisiana
daughter
Glaffey Belton F 20 Louisiana
grandson
Willie Belton M 3 Louisiana
grandson
Cleveland Belton M 1 Louisiana

Citing this Record
"United States Census, 1940," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VY5W-FYP : accessed 26 Feb 2013), Odessa Simon, Alexandria, Police Jury Ward 1, Rapides, Louisiana, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 40-16B, sheet 5A, family 107, NARA digital publication T627, roll 1441.

I believe the following is your Willie Belton, Sr., incorrectly named Willis here (transcription error) in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, in 1940. He is married, but he and his brother, Lucius, are living with their step-father, Frank E. Barnett, and their mother, Iles. Glaffey's record shows that both children (ages 2 and 1) were born in Louisiana, but she had lived in Oklahoma in 1935, and Willie lived in Oklahoma in 1935. As to why and when the two separated, you will have to use the family stories and your own imagination to figure that out! They were just kids!
Here are the web addresses for Willie's records:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VBK3-56Z

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-27774-2313-16?...

name: Willis Belton (Record shows Willie)
event: Census event year 1940
event place: Ward 1, Okmulgee, Okmulgee City, Okmulgee, Oklahoma,United States
gender: Male
age: 21
marital status: Married
race (original)
race (standardized): Negro
relationship to head of household: Stepson
birthplace: Oklahoma
estimated birth year: 1919
residence in 1935: Same Place
enumeration district number: 56-26
family number: 29
sheet number and letter: 2A
line number: 24
nara publication number: T627
nara roll number: 3319
digital folder number: 005454660
image number: 00008

head: Frank E Barnett M 72 Alabama
wife: Iles Barnett F 42 Arkansas
stepson: Lucius Belton M 17 Oklahoma
stepson: Willis Belton M 21 Oklahoma

I hope this is of some help to you.
I am also descended form the same Jacob Miller, but you have some wrong information. Jacob's parents were not Nicholas and Rosalie. This is an error which has been propogated over the net. The information was first published in a genealogical magazine. Several attempts were made to contact the author of this erroneous informaiton, to find out where this supposed infomation was obtained. The person who wrote the article was no where to be found, even at the residence address given in the article. Something very fishy, write an article for a genealogical magazine, cannot be found at the given address, nor can the information be substantiated.

Hello. My name is Megan Liprie. I am 13 years old and I live in Lake Charles, LA. I ahve been doin research on my grandmother's family for about 2 years now. I'm related to the Millers from Opelousas adn I went aback to 1695 to a man named Nicholas Miller from Germany. His wife's name was Roselie Miller. There son Jacob Miller came over around 1750 along with his wife Ana Marie Theigen. I've learned much about my family, however, there are still a few pieces missing. If you have any information please email me. I am very interested in learning more about my family's history.
Thankyou.

The Opelousas Post was situated in St. Landry Parish and was the center of social, religious and government activities for a large area populated by ranchers, traders and farmers, fairly early on. A time-frame and surnames from your friend could yield more focused replies to your query, here. I, for one, would like to help.

The picture listed of Godfrey Tatman looks like a photo found at my grandmother's house. I was told that he was my grandfather's great, or great-great grandfather. My grandfather was James Tatman (Jim) married to Ida Hall Tatman from Opelousas, Louisiana (Saint Landry). I was actually named after my grandfather's mother - Malinda Tatman. I find it interesting that where most spell Malinda, Melinda. My name and that of a family aunt (my grandfather's sister) is spelled Malinda. I've additionally noticed that there are many reports of this family spelling of Malinda in the Tatman family line. Quite interesting.

You wrote "William Johnson Offutt widow is Eliza Marie Posey. Will & Estate dated April 18, 1843. (LSAR: Opelousas; 1843)". I have a different date entirely. Not to mention that I have yet to see the William Offutt who married Eliza Marie Posey listed as William Johnson Offutt? According to my research, William Offutt, the husband of Elizaq Marie Posey was born August 14, 1808 and died January 22, 1876. He is found in both the 1860 and 1870 LA Federal Census. He is buried in St. Landry Church in Opelousas, and I have a photo of his grave marker. As a matter of fact, he married an Evelina Moorein 1861, which may be where the succ. you mentino came from. However the will and estate of April 18, 1843 in my mind refers to the William Johnson Offutt who was married to Lucie Glenn.

Dave O.

William Johnson Offutt baptized Opelousas Church Volume 4 page 47.

there are a few other records for the Offutt family in Opelousas.
One mentioning that Nathaniel was from Georgia. (son of William J. & Lucy Glenn).
And, another for Ann Offutt, from Washington County Georgia. minor daughter of William J. Let me know if you're interested in any of those. And, I believe there's a marriage record for Nathaniel too.

Thanks for the information. I find it interesting that the William Offutt who was baptized at age 62 would be William Johnson Offutt's father, at least that is my opinion. I didn't know that the man that I had as William J. Offutt who married Lucie Glenn had Johnson as his middle name as well, that is helpful. Was that on the same page in Volume 6?

Dave

Hello I'm looking for any information on Glaffey "Gladys" R. Simon Born Feb. 20, 1920, in Oklahoma. She married William "Willie" Nathaniel Belton Sr. Born Jan. 25th 1919 in Oklahoma. They married in Dec of 1936. I'm not sure but I think her mother's name was Odessa, it said on her death cert. her mother maiden last name was Tolba, but Odessa married Glaffey's father Who had the last name of Simon. I was told his name was Edgar Simon, I don't know his birthdate, but Glaffey was his first child by first wife Odessa. I know Odessa at some point live in Alexandria, LA and Glaffey with her.I can't put much information together on Edgar and I'm thinking its because of them moving and switching names possibly. It was said the Edgar's name was George Edgar Simon, I believe his father is Joseph Simon Jr. and Joseph's father is Joseph Simon Sr., but none of this has been confirmed. Please help if you can? Thank you in advance.

They aren't easy to find. I would also love to see what is left of Barbreck other than pictures that are on the internet. Aren't we thankful for the internet and the information we can gather? I would love sharing information with you. I was in Louisana last spring doing some research but there is never enough time and I hope to get back some time soon. I live in SE Kansas.
Hi, I am the GGGranddaughter of Hiriam Gustavus Roberts. My Great Aunt Pearl and my Grandfather were born on Barbreck Plantation. She wrote about the plantation in a book on Louisiana history written in 1953. If I go through my files I believe I have a copy of the sale of Barbreck from Wartell to Hiriam Roberts. The brick home is in bad repair but someone sent me photos of it a few years ago. I would love to share information with you on this. I ran across this post randomly googling John W. Daniels, I was looking for information on when he died. I have added a link to a story about my Great Aunt Pearl in which she tells of being born on the plantation, sixth paragraph down.
From what I understand Pierre Gabriel Wartelle bought Barbreck from Marsden Campbell around Oct 1859. Wartelle sold Barbreck to Hiram Gustavus Roberts year unknown. Mary Daniel Roberts (Hiram's wife) died in 1871 having outlived her husband by 8 years. Mary's brother John Wesley Daniel then became the owner of Barbreck in 1872. From what I have read, the thought is that Wartelle built the brick house on the plantation. The Payne's were owners in the latter part of the 1800's. Jacob Payne was a cotton factor and actually his company owned Barbreck, St. Peter's and Anchorage plantations. I've gathered this information from several different stories so it could have mistakes. Great hearing from you. Bobbie

I don't know if it would be helpful but my family tradition is that Marsden Campbell (1777-1841) of North Carolina moved to Louisiana, bought and named Barbreck Plantation in the 1830's. The North Carolina plantation was called "Clarendon." Upon Campbell's death, his son, Dr. Marsden Campbell (1812-1857), inherited the plantation but immediately sought to sell it. The Doctor died in 1857 and the plantation was finally sold soon after his death. When did your family have a connection to Barbeck? Perhaps the Paynes bought it or something.

My favorite resources are the Southwest Louisiana Records series by Fr. Donald Hebert, 40+ volumes and counting. They contain abstracts of the Catholic Church and civil records from the beginning of the colony to the early 1900s. From these you can contact the church and court house for official or unofficial copies of the actual records. Check for them at a library in your area or a Family History Center run by the Church of Latter Day Saints. Even non-Catholics are often entered in these books.
