Ah, didn't know Vernon was formed from part of Rapides Parish, good to know. Next mysteries to resolve is where she was buried and why her husband evidently didn't accompany his family to LA and died in 1887 in Smith Co. MS ....

Anyone know where I can get information about the death date and place for Leah (Smith) Craft, daughter of Tobias Smith and wife of William Craft?

Census records reflect she was born during 1825 in Mississippi and moved to Rapides Parish, then to Vernon Parish LA. Different researchers report varying dates for death between 1880 and 1895. However, I haven't found any records yet to confirm the date.
David,

My Grahams were from Crystal Springs, too, in part. My 4-great grandmother, a Cinderella Jane Graham, was married to a William Sanders, and I'm pretty sure they lived there for a time, at least. What has your family always said about where these Grahams were from before coming to this country? Were they from Ireland, or Scotland? I'd love to know! Thanks, and may God bless you!

Steve Canton
Arlington, TX
pictishsaint@hotmail.com

Any info appreciated. Morris T Brown had a Daughter Lurea or Lurey Brown is my GrandMother. She had 3 sons with James Marles Howard. The youngest was my Father James Douglas Howard. She died on Feb 17, 1945 on her 30th Birthdday. Always heard car accident in Jackson Parish. All Ive found on her is she was a housekeeper for The Charley Cummings Family and divorced. She did remarry between 1940 and her death in 1945. I have spent 3 months straight looking for anything on her life. Not even an Obit cn I find. There are 2 death index cards with date of death and one list Negro and the other White. And last name Jordon and Jordan. Well she was White but its as dying on Birthdate which isnt common in same parish I figure?... So with differnt spellings for first and last names doesnt help. She is buried in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Any help will be most appreciated! Thank You Carol Howard
Reply Report Abuse Print

There is a Patsy Ruth Gordy (1930-1965) and a Demps Gordy (1908-1956) buried in Union Grove Cemetery in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. You can find them in the Find A Grave database.

Please be advised that Union Grove Cemetery is also referred to as Calcasieu Baptist Church Cemetery, which has a database of the burials in the cemetery under the latter naming.

Yes I would consider her the mother of Delia/Dela as on the census records, but the she could be Brooks mother also but remarried to a Martin, it says related to head of household which would be Brooks, and since both Delia & Isaac say parents born in Louisiana. Have you found all you need on Brooks, to see if his mother was named Sallie/Sally?
I didn't try to find Sallie Martin in 1900 census. Try Sally or Sallie Martin born 1850-52, she should be in 1900, 1880 census maybe in 1870 census also, if she married about age 16. Check census records in Texas and Louisiana.
Do you have the death certificate for Delia? Their marriage record?
try
familysearch.org
and ancestry.com
if your near a library hat has genealogy records, there are some free search sites you can use at library.
I wanted to ask you if this Sallie Martin that was listed in the census would be Delia's mother? if so do you have any more information about whom she was married to, that I could search to find out whom her parents were? Sil Williams, has been my brick wall.

Do you have any pictures of the Williams side of the family that you would be willing to share? The only picture I have is of Canzetta (Canzettia,...spelled several ways on Census). and a tiny picture of Amelia. Canzetta was my daddy's grandmother - my great-grandmother. Her son was my grandfather - Robert E Lee Perkins. You can email me direct if you like. at jyperk at gmail dot com

There is a possibility of the Alexandria paper having this obit, but I have had no success with finding Vernon Parish info there the 2 times I have looked. Another possibility is the Lake Charles Lib. The ladies there have been very helpful finding old obits for me. Also suggested was Beaumont papers. I hope to visit Lake Charles and Beaumont this summer and will keep your info in my folder. Jo

I knew Pansy - not well though. My parents were Carlene and Hubert Westmoreland. I knew your grandpa Uncle Jiggs - he was my Grandma that lived with us (Leola). I have a lot of info and cannot find out what happened to Zilpha Parker - she was Grandpa (Lemuel Cullen) mother. There was a family secret. My email address is pwsherwood@att.net. I live in Bridge City, Texas. My home phone is 409-735-3930. I hope this is not public info that I am passing out. I have a problem sometime getting into the messages on Ancestry so - please contact me by private email. I think I have my security set to high and cannot always get in. Pat Sherwood

I do know that the name Kile or Kyle was in it, but his kids never talked about it much cause of some kind of family secret. Do you have any info that may be helpful in my search. And who was your grandparents. I know his kids were, leola Nora, Monroe, gilbert, Hattie, fred,Mildred and Floyd... Think that is all of them...
I have a Smart/West connection in my Vernon Parish family, also. My Gr-grandmother, Lydia Crews West, was the daughter of Madison West and Nancy Henderson. Madison and Nancy also had a daughter named Nancy who married Dr. E.E. Smart. I believe that they started the Smart Chapel Cemetery near Leesville...might be a place for you to look. Madison's home was in the Silver Creek area closer to Walnut Hill and Slagle, though.

Luvicy/Louisa Waters married George Lafayette Graham in Mississippi in 1869. Luvicy's first husband Nathaniel Marion Burleson died on Dec 9, 1862 while serving CSA. Those children listed born before 1869 are in fact Burleson children. Several are buried in and around Vernon Parish. Both Luvicy and George are buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. George and Thomas Joseph White were both in Co. E, 6th Miss Regt. Thaomas and his family are also buried at Mt. Pleasant. Luvicy Waters/Burleson/Graham was Thomas White's aunt. Thomas White is my 3rd ggrandfather.
