Thanks for the article and I will return one from when the Florinda was redsicovered:

THE FLORINDA
IN THE MIDST OF HARMON JONES’S FAMILY

Dear Pic. Yesterday I found myself seated at the hospitable table of Mme Hoey, [Caroline Pierce-her sister is Marion Pierce Jones] where beside her own two beautiful daughters and stalwart son, sat Mr. Livingston Jones, his accomplished wife, and two little cherubs. Liv, fifteen years of age, son of Harman Jones and M’me Hoey is Harmon Jones’s wife’s sister; they were eight in all. You may be sure the subject matter of conversation was the Florinda’s company. M’me Jones (wife of Harmon) is at present in New York. These people are stirring by every means in their power to procure all possible information in regard to the correctness of the reports, in a very few days they will be in passion of every fact that is possible to be gleaned officially from the British Government, also through private sources. Harmon Jones was sole owner of, and fitted out the Florinda. The cargo also belonged to him, he was the prime mover and master spirit of the expedition, and was a young man of extraordinary ability, enjoying to the fullest extent the confidence of all who knew him; some experienced men told him not to think of going on such a frail craft, but with his gallant comrades he could see no danger. In a 44-ton schooner, built for the lake, they start. Harmon returns from the Belize, purchases a yawl boat; they leave, sail out of the river, full of confidence and dazzled with the glittering tales of California wealth. All were inexperienced men and knew little of a voyage round to the Pacific, away to the Cape de Verde, one thousand miles out of their course . Seventy days after we hear next from them, Harmon’s letters up to this are all gay and lively; his last letter from Rio, some time later, expresses doubt- vessel leaky, shaky. As they advance to the southward, the weather gets gradually more boisterous., the elements they find more fickle. The little lake schooner is out of her latitude. After a while somebody reports them off the Cape. There is the last news we get. Twenty-six years elapse; Harmon’s then unborn son- a man now- Livingstone, then a babe, now a father; Sidney, Kenmure, Sullivan, Williams, and others all to man’s estate grown, have ever clung to hope. Certainly no one would be so base, so utterly depraved, as to report the discovery of those lost people, without some foundation of fact. The whole community are waiting with anxiety the investigation of those reports.

New Orleans Daily Picayune July 22, 1875 p 4 c5
Thanks for the article.
Holley Jones and George Stem are cousins through the Peirce/Pierce and Patterson family from Massachusetts. I wonder why so many left Mass. for St. Francisville. My husband has another line that followed the same route and married into the same family. Very interesting.
Good luck with your search, keep in touch
Ruth

I am new to this genealogy thing, but I hope I can help. Harmon (or Harmonus) DeGraff Jones was my great great grandfather, and his son Harmon was my great grandfather. Ethel Jones Harvey, his daughter, was my grandmother. Holley Jones Stem and Emmett Jones were siblings of my grandmother. Family lore had it that George Stem, besides being married to Holley, was also a cousin of some kind. I have just located a story in the National Times about the Florinda. In this link

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn82016187/1887-05-05...

see the article in the second and third columns from the right.

I am not sure about the Hoey family. My mother used to refer to an "Aunty Hoy," or at least that's what we thought she said.

I am researching the Hudson Family of West Feliciana and running into a few dead ends. My great-great grandmother was Lillian Hudson (b. 1877), who moved to New Orleans and married William Radecker. Her siblings were Henry (b. 1876) and Marietta (b. 1879). Their parents were Robert Hudson (b. 1844), who served in the Civil War in Austin's Sharpshooters and was a farmer, and his wife Mary F. (last name unknown) who was likely born 1855 in LA to parents from AL and NC). Robert's parents were Henry Hudson (b. 1804 in MD?-1850) and Mary Gready Posey (1815-1893). Their other children were Erastus A. Hudson (b. 1847), Martha Ann Hudson Early (m. Thomas W. Early), Henrietta Hudson (m. Charles B. Austin), and Margaret Hudson. Mary Gready Posey was a daughter of Margaret Palmer, daughter of Archibald Palmer and Hannah Carter. Have found a good amount of info on the Carter line, but not much on the Palmers or Greadys.
My questions are: Where did Henry Hudson come from and any other info on his family? Any information on Erastus--marriage, death? Any information on Mary F., wife of Robert--who were her parents, where did they live? What happened to Robert and Mary F. Hudson--last info I can find is the 1880 census where they own a farm and Mary Posey Hudson owns neighboring farm and raising the Early children. Any more info on Robert and Mary's children Henry and Marietta; what became of them?
Thanks so much!

I haven't been able to get back past his birth in LA in 1851--parents, place, etc. As someone said, he kept changing the way he spelled his name which makes it hard to trace. Also, LA doesn't have that many records to trace. Any ideas, anyone?
I've posted all I can find on Ancestry.com in my tree if anyone wants to look.

I also descend from George W. Kimball and Patience Cobb through their son, Lewis Alston Bolen Cobb Kimball. My grandmother was his daughter. Her name was Georgiana Kimball Mackay. She was married to Frederick Mackay. The story I was told is this: Pharoah Kimball was engaged to be married. One day, while building a house for himself and fiance, she drove up (in a carriage) with another man. They proceeded to laugh at Pharoah and the two men got into a fight during which the other man was accidentally killed. Judge Kimball sent Pharoah to Kentucky where he assumed the name of Robert Milton Layson. Georgiana located Layson family members and communicated with them. At that time they were not aware that his real name was Pharoah Cobb Kimball. My cousin Elizabeth Mackay had copies of letters regarding this. Sadly, she died a month ago. I will try to locate them and will get in touch if I find them. Pharoah was Georgiana's uncle.

If you send me your private email I will send you what I have collected. We are not direct descendants of Hoey, Patterson, Jones but several other connections do exist. I try all backdoors. I am running out of places to look for anything on the Florinda. I am tracking down any of the passengers or crew, looking for info. Not much luck, as yet.

How are you related to Harmon? You are the first person I met who was a relative.

btw..John Hoey's wife's name was Caroline, I think, not Cornelia.

Harmon Jones was the son of Harmon DeGraff Jones and Marion Bradfort Pierce. The mother lived with the family in the 1900 census. His mother’s family tree can be found in
“Pierce genealogy, being the record of the posterity of John Pers, an early inhabitant of Watertown, in New England”

Harmon’s parents lived in New Orleans in 1849 where his father bought a schooner named the Florinda, and left the port of New Orleans for the gold rush of San Francisco. He was never heard from again. In 1875 a British vessel got off course in the South Pacific and found the survivors of the Florinda on a small island, or so the story goes. That is documented in the same book.

His mother had a sister named Cornelia Pierce who was the wife of John Hoey also in New Orleans.

My interest is in the Florinda, because my great-great grandfather was the captain of the vessel. His name was James Kenmure and his letter to his wife is also in the book. If you are a member of Ancestery.com you can read the pages of the book. Good luck with your search.
Am seeking information on Micajah Davis family. You are researching daughter Annis and I am trying to research son Samuel. Samuel was the father of Susan Van Houten Davis and Richard Davis (by two different wives). Micajah's daughter Susannah married Cornelius Van Houten (out of religion-Quaker) and Micajah was excommunicated by the Quakers in Virginia. He then moved to Mississippi. Susan Van Houten Davis married James Monroe Gwin and together they established Wicklow Plantation in Holmes/Carroll County, Mississippi. Susan's half brother Richard was one of the original owners of Providence Plantation in Holmes County, Mississippi.

Their names are James (or William) Richardson and Catherine "Kitty" Plush Richardson. James was born about 1780 (not sure where) and died in 1817 in West Feliciana Parish. They married about 1800. She was born in 1782.
Thanks for responding.
