Hello,
I'm sorry I can't help you with your mystery. But, I'd like to mention a mystery on my KIDDER family-tree in regards to Princeton, ME.
My gr-gr-grandfather, Joseph KIDDER, had a brother, James "Calvin" KIDDER, known as "Cal, Jr." who also lived in Princeton (near Calais). "Cal, Jr." and Miranda (McLAUGHLIN) had 10 children but not all survived childhood. One of their daughters, as a teen, "got pregnant." The father of the baby was listed as James McLELLAN "of Nova Scotia." The boy was given the same name. It seems the couple did not remain together and "Cal, Jr." ended up taking in the boy and then adopted him - changing his name from James McLELLAN to James KIDDER. The daughter later married another man.
This is an old posting of mine from 7 yrs. ago, and I don't believe there is any new information from what was posted then.

(It seems that none of the KIDDER's living now knew that their "Uncle Cal" was not born a KIDDER.)
