I have access to census pages through my local library. I just checked and there were 2 Joseph ROY's in Maine in 1880. One was 12, and part of the large family of Julien ROY:

Up to 1900 there were 25 people with the name in Maine. This is one. He's living as a servant with the MARSTON family.

In these years the Joseph ROY's were mostly in Androscoggin Co. and Kennebec Co.
Up to 1920 there were a few more with the name, but only 2 in Somerset Co. The first one below had a wife, Josephine, the 2nd one below said he was single.
