Classification: Bible
Surnames: HENDERSON, JORDAN, GARCELON, DICKEY
My gt-gt-grandfather GEORGE WASHINGTON HENDERSON was b. 1832-35 in New Portland, Somerset County [oral history and 1860 census, New Portland]. His parents were JOHN and MARY ELLEN HENDERSON [oral history]. They are probably JOHN HENDERSON and MARY (POLLY) JORDAN originally of Lisbon, Maine [var. death certs of their children]. John and Mary had 8 other children -- CHARLES, WELLINGTON, ROBERT, MOSES, WILLIAM ORA, SAMUEL, MARY ELLEN, and FRANCES LOIS. Most New Portland VR's were destroyed by fire in the 1890's. Nothing is known of either daughter. I have various info on the sons, which includes birthdates ranging from c. 1815 to c. 1842. Buried in New Portland is a "Mrs. Mary, wife of John (Henderson), d. 1846 at age 71." She is too old to be the above-named Mary. Also in 1860 census for New Portland, a John Henderson age 70 resides with EBENEZER GARCELON and his wife CATHERINE.

GEORGE WASHINGTON HENDERSON m. HELEN MARY DICKEY of Monroe in 1856. They had my gt-grandfather, FRED SAMUEL HENDERSON, and 3 daughters. G.W's brother WILLIAM ORA HENDERSON m. Helen Mary's sister RUTH HORTON DICKEY. He fought in the Civil War (have pension records), moved west, died in Los Angeles in 1918.

G.W. resided in Garland, Corinna, & St. Albans, where he died in 1891. Where is G. W. buried? Could he be buried on his farm in St. Albans? It was auctioned off at his death [Somerset Reporter].

WELLINGTON moved to the Old Town-Orono area, was a lumberman and m. MARGARET RING. They had a son FRANK HENDERSON who went to Boston.

There are HENDERSONs in New Portland today. We communicated in the early 1980's. We couldn't make the connection, but I have always felt certain there is a close connection between the two branches. After 25 years of research, I have a great deal of data, not so much proven. The "other" Henderson family has many of the same names. Both families have a Charles, a Robert, and a Moses. My family has William Ora; theirs has Ora William. Their "boys" were born about 10-13 years before mine.

A CHARLES H. HENDERSON and a SAMUEL H. HENDERSON each resided in the Eustis-Stratton area. Their parents were JOHN HENDERSON and MARY JORDAN of NEW PORTLAND, MAINE [death certs].

I am seeking a person connected to Somerset County Hendersons who can add data, hopefully missing links.
Thanks, Donna
