Hi, I'm interested to find anything about Nehemiah, his parents, his first wife, and anything else. #12 Jessie Gowen (Chain) was my grandmother. Elizabeth
*********************************************
1.Nehemiah Gowen was born in 1810 in ME. He died in 1855/1859 in Palermo, ME.

Nehemiah Gowen is listed in the 1840 Maine census, a white male 20-30, living alone in Washington Tp, Lincoln Co, and working in agriculture.

Nehemiah and family (wife Eliza and 4 children) were found in Palermo, Waldo County in the 1850 Maine census. He is 40 in this census. The spelling was Gowin but it looks like there were various spellings of this name in the area. Nehemiah was a farmer with $1500 owned in Real Estate.

The marriage information was obtained from the Maine Marriage Index (1743-1891). George was listed there as George Gowan, with a residence in Palermo, Maine, while Eliza Ann Whitten was listed with a residence in Unity, Maine.

Nehemiah married (1) Mrs. Gowen about 1840. She died about 1843 in Palermo, ME.

They had the following children:

2 Oshea W Gowen was born in 1840.

3 Aseneth Gowen was born in 1843.

Nehemiah married (2) Eliza Ann Whitten daughter of Whitten on 3 Feb 1848 in Waldo Co, ME. Eliza was born about 1824 in ME. She died in NE.

Eliza's place of residence at marriage to Nehemiah was listed as Unity, ME. The marriage information was obtained from the Maine Marriage Index (1743-1891).
**********************
After Nehemiah died, Eliza married Daniel Lenfest and moved to Nebraska after 1870.
**************************************************
Eliza was listed in the 1870 Maine census married to Daniel Lenfest, Appleton, Knox County.

Nehemiah and Eliza had the following children:

4 John Gowen was born in 1848 in Palermo, ME.

5 George Riley Gowen was born on 27 Feb 1849. He died on 4 Jan 1933.

6 Erastus L. Gowen "Rastus" was born about 1854 in ME.
Erastus married Jane S. Flanders on 24 Jul 1880 in Penobscot Co, ME.

7 Oliver Gowen was born in Jun 1856.

Second Generation

5.George Riley Gowen (Nehemiah [Riley]) was born on 27 Feb 1849 in Palermo, ME. He died on 4 Jan 1933 in Ong, Clay Co, NE. He was buried in Ong, Clay Co, NE.

George came to Nebraska September 29, 1877. He was very religious. He sometimes threw dead chickens on the roof of the house, as charity for the local Indians. He often went back to Maine to see the family.
**************************************************************
George and Lydia were married in the home of William and Emma Beck (her brother-in-law and sister), by Rev. Lewis.
**************************************************************
George is listed in the 1870 Maine census living with his mother, his stepfather, 3 Lenfest children and Erastus and Oliver Gowen, all in Appleton, Knox County. He is listed in the 1880 census in Morton Co, Dakota Territory, working as a Teamster. This was just a few years after the railroad had come to this region; it was the era of the huge 'bonanza' farms.

George is listed in the 1900 Nebraska census living with Liddie and five children; in 1910 he's listed with Lydia and four children.

George married Lydia Jane Bull "Kitty" daughter of Horace Catlin Bull and Sarah Roxanna Baker on 1 May 1883 in Edgar, Clay Co, NE. Lydia was born on 23 Nov 1860 in St. Charles Co, MO. She died on 24 Feb 1962 in Carroll, Carroll Co, IA. She was buried in Feb 1962 in Ong, Clay Co, NE.

When Lydia was born, her brother William remarked that with her shock of black hair she looked like his Kitty, which led to her family nickname.

Her mama gave her a New Year's gift in 1880: A book titled 'Home and Health and Home Economics."

Lydia came to Nebraska 1 March 1882, to the home of her sister, Emma Gowen Beck.

When the children were born, Daddy went for Aunt Emma Beck, then for the Doctor (who charged $10 for delivering us). All this was arranged with horse and buggy - or wagon and horses.

Lydia took on boarders, and ran the telephone switchboard as the night operator. She converted her home in Ong, NE, so a teacher and his family could live in the front apartment.
******************************
Lydia's father left to fight in the Civil War soon after she was born. She wrote (abt. 1945) her memories of that time:

I was born in 1860 and was the baby when Father went to the war. My brother, Charles, joined the army soon as he was old enough, but he only got as far as Alton, Illinois, and guarded Prisoners. Two children, Tom and Bob, were born after me; Tom while Father was gone. Mother saw lots of hardships while Father was gone. The neighbors hired Mother by paying so much a child, to prepare one room and teach school. There was no school near. My mother taught three women to write; she had been doing their writing to their husbands in the war.

My oldest sister, Emma, took care of us young children. I remember a little bit about it, and one time that happened while my father was home on a furlough. I did not know him when he came home. I know I felt odd when I saw Mother hug and kiss that strange man that I was afraid of. I had forgotten all about him. I knew Mother wrote letters to someone we called Pappy, and I always had to write to him too. I was afraid of him but soon got over it and remember what we had for supper that day. We had a tablecloth on the table, which was used only for company. I remember we had soda biscuits, mashed potatoes, ham and good ham grease gravy, and ripe peaches that Will and I thought were fine. They had a dance that night and I sat up on the table out of the way.
