Does anyone know where I can learn about what fatal diseases were prevalent in Maine in the late 18th and early 19th centuries? I imagine that some of the folks I am researching who disappeared from the record succumbed to some sort of communicable disease.

I'd like to learn about any common diseases (tuberculosis comes to mind), statistics for where and when they occurred. My ancestors were from Lincoln County.

Thanks for any advice or information.

William D Romanski
Rhode Island

birth family search, Maine/Quebec/Florida connection

The only info we have been about Tom's (Schiferl) birth family is that his mother was 26 years of age at the time of birth (she would now be about 76+/-), and from a “New England state” (US). Tom's DOB is July 14th, 1962. Research keeps indicating that his birth family/ancestors might have lived in Maine/Massachusetts, probably immigrating from Quebec. Geographic surname matches are Drisdelle, Michaud, Guest, Mathieu, Gagnon, Cyr, Roy, Pelletier,Dube, Morin, Ouellett/Willet ++. FTDNA surname matches are Brown, Coleman, Cummins, McCrary/McCreary, Nordin, Robertson, ++. We think Tom's birth mom might have stayed with friends or family in Florida for her pregnancy/birth. Do you have any relatives that you could ask about potential relatives of Tom's?? Maybe anyone with connections, relatives or friends in French Canada, the New England states, and/or Florida??
Tom has tested on FTDNA (kit # 284194), and GEDmatch )kit # M090021).
There are more details posted on Tom's Facebook page (thomas.schiferl.7)
Thank you so much for your help :-) Christine (Tom's wife)

No, unfortunately, Florida provides no "identifying" information :-( And, we have not been able to communicate with any closer than 3rd cousins so far on 23andme.com. Tom does have two 2nd/3rd cousins on the Relative Finder, but they have not responded as yet to our invitation to share genomes or contact us. If they do respond eventually, and turn out the be 2nd cousins, then we have a better chance of determining a closer match, maybe a grandparent/aunt/uncle or closer.

"The Portland Sailor's Home and Bethel was built in 1854 by the Maine Seamen's Union at the corner of Waite (now the eastern part of Middle) and India Streets, converted from the Stephen Waite House built in 1830. It was spared in the July 4, 1866 fire, and was renamed the American House, later the Eagle House and Florence Hotel. It was partially destroyed by an arsonist in 1930, and is now home to Micucci Grocery. Randall (himself an old sea Captain) was the proprietor/landlord of the "American House" on 43 India St. in 1879. By 1884 his son Thomas H. Randall was the proprietor of the "Eagle House" at 43 India St. It is possible that the location was also commonly known as the sailors home from its early history.

Bill, the 1906 Town Register for Paris, Maine (p101) lists Fred H. Decoster as a farmer living in South Paris. Looks like a son Frank E. living in Norway (nextdoor town) with occupation Shoe Shop Operative (there was a shoe manufacturer in Norway) and Deputy Sherriff, and I think Fred's wife Lizzie S.

"Paris, Maine - The Second Hundred Years 1893-1993" shows VRs for 5 DeCostas and 23 Decosters. Among the latter is Frederick H. DeCoster who died January 24, 1934 in Norway, age 82 years, 5 days. Born Greenwood. (I make his birthday January 19, 1852.)

So, not your guy, but maybe a cousin? Worth some time to poke around other Oxford County, Maine town VRs or Genweb forums?

I am still looking for information about Frederick M. DeCosta/DeCoster born in Maine on 22 Feb 1860. I am a grandson of Frederick and Catherine (Katie) Fay of queens new york, I am try to find out when they were married and where. Frederick came from Maine, Katie came from new york. They moved to St. Louis MO in June,1890. They had a son Fred E. DeCosta in september, 1890 in St. Louis. They were members of the Second Presbyterian Church (1910) church in st louis. This booklet includes a membership list and a list of pew holders of the Second Presbyterian Church, located at Taylor Avenue and Westminster Place, St. Louis, Mo. Entries in these two lists include church members' names and addresses. The booklet also includes lists of church officers and society members.
I believe that my grandmother katie at some time left and went back to queens, new york to visit. They had a total of seven children, all in st louis. Fred E. died in 1911, the next two died within 2 or 3 months of birth, the fourth one lived a little over a year and then there was Ralph, George, and my father John Tee. Please stop by my tree
DeCosta Family St Louis and
DeCosta Tree Missouri They should be public trees. If you need help message me please.
Thank you Bill DeCosta
the street sounds familiar but i'm not terribly familiar with portland, it might have been moved. depending on the time in question the "old port" has changed a lot including the demolishing of the entire "little italy" and its surrounding buildings and some streets.

Hi, I'm a volunteer researcher, not related. It seems you only want to hear from people who are related to you? Many volunteers help people on Ancestry message boards research their family history. Is that an idea that appeals to you? At the moment they can't respond because they don't know who you are researching or what you are trying to find. Hope this comment helps.

I have nothing and have been doing research since the 80's. I found her sister Madeline, and we have found all the siblings, only 1 of which is living anymore.
Hi melssugarplum - this is why it is a good idea to include the information you already have in your query. Otherwise posters who wish to help you will redo the work you have already done.

Be specific such as I have the information from familysearch.org for her two marriages and her birth. I have found her on XYZ year/s on XYZ census.

Be specific on what you are looking for such as:
I am looking for 1)specific date of death 2)what happened to children (insert names) after her death, etc.

Here is the Binette line I am researching ( from most recent to earliest ):

1. Joseph Gerard Binette and Linda Mae Moore.
2. Romeo Binette and Rita Pombriant.
3. Desire Binette and Eva Royer.
4. Louis Binette and and Elise Tardif.
5. Louis Binette and Adelaide Nolette.
6. Charles Binette and Brigitte Tardif.
7. Louis-Michel Binette and Marie Helene Lehoux.
8. Louis-Michel Binette and Reine Grenier Garnier.
9. Louis Binette and Angelique Landry.
10. Nicolas Binette and Genevieve Brisson.
11. Rene Binette and Catherine Bourgeois.
12. Mathurin Binette and Marie Proulx.

This Binette family immigrated in ca. 1889 from Quebec to Biddeford, Maine.Any information about the above Binette line would be very much appreciated.I've got the females all figured out. I would hope that someone on this board has stories and photos that could make this line more colorful, especially when they came to Biddeford, Maine. You can e-mail me if you like.
Jean

Joseph Lorfano Sr. was my Grandfather. Born in Naples, Italy. Married Pauline DiLuna, born in Avelino, Italy. They were married in USA. They had 6 children. Ralph, Mary, Elenor, Evelina, Fred and Joseph Jr. Their farm was in Scarboro on Spurwink Rd. My Grandfather had a half brother that lived in the Boston area. His name was John Leonetti. I'm not sure of that spelling. I don't know of any cousins of my grandfather. The only serviving offspring is Joseph Jr. Pauline DiLuna Lorfano died in 1928. Joseph Lorfano Sr. died in 1965. Hop this helps. I'm Freds daughter.

Thank you VERY much! That does seem to settle it - William Chamberlain from Castine is NOT my great-grandfather. My William was married to Elizabeth Milton and living in Minnesota by 1883.

Mary in MN

William Chamberlain of Castine appears to be the same who lived in Boothbay Harbor in 1900:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11775-60537-70?...

He was born May 1860, and married Alice A. Smith. The birth records of several of his children give William's birthplace as Castine:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-10049-44573-61?cc...

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-10049-45979-73?cc...

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-10049-44770-58?cc...

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-10049-43494-49?cc...

My William Chamberlain was married in 1883 in Anoka, Minnesota, to Elizabeth Milton. The information available on his marriage has no birthplace listed. His obit shows his birthplace as "Bengal" Maine - I think that's probably Bangor, Maine, as I can't find any trace of a town named Bengal, and other records say Bangor. There is nothing on his parents in either his obit or his death certificate, and none of his other descendants have any information either.

There are two William Chamberlains that are the right age in the 1870 Census - William, the son of Aaron Chamberlain of Castine, and William, who is living with the Whitmore family in Hudson. In over 30 years of trying, I haven't been able to document which one is my William.

For a variety of reasons, I think it's more likely to be the one living in Hudson, but I can't prove it. The family trees I've been able to find on Ancestry all show Aaron's son William with a birth year of 1861, but no death date. So I thought I'd see if I could find out what happened to him - and I'm hoping his father's will or probate record says something useful.

Mary

Thanks for the info on Aaron, but what I'm trying to find is a probate record that might mention his heirs. He had a son named William that was the right age to be my great-grandfather, but I have no evidence that they are one and the same. I am hoping that if there was a will - or probate record - it might mention what happened to his William.

Mary in MN

I am trying to find the parents of my great-grandfather, William Chamberlain. He was born in Maine in about 1861. There are two possibilities in the census - one is the son of Aaron Chamberlain & Mary Frances Ordway of Castine, Hancock, Maine. I'm trying to find a probate record for Aaron Chamberlain, who died in 1917, in the hopes that it will mention his son William. Can anyone help?
Thanks!
Mary Chamberlain

I’m not related to any member of this family.

You are at the end of the road.

This is your problem -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++
