George A. Wilson (or Willison) born abt 1868 in Allegany Co. Maryland - who are his parents?

I am yet again perplexed by a census record and hope someone can help me figure out who someone belongs to...

In the 1870 census (and again in the 1880 census) there is listed a child living with the Amon Wilson family. Amon may also be spelled Aman. In the 1870 census the child is listed as G.A. Willison and he is 2 years old. There is no mention as to the relationship of this child to the family. The family is living in District 9, Allegany County, Maryland.

In the 1880 census...G.A. is now listed as George A. Willison, age 13...and he is listed as what appears to be "grandson"...but it is hard to read. Amon Wilson only seems to have had 2 male children; William and Eli - meaning to me that George would have to be the child of either William or Eli IF he is the grandchild of Amon, right? Ok...so in the 1880 census..William is only 28...and if George is 13...that pretty much precludes William as the father...he would have only been 15 when George was born...possible, but not likely. That leaves Eli...

Eli seems to only have been married once...to Charlotte Virginia Growden. The marriage record for them appears to be in 1880...well after the birth of George...so this means that Charlotte is NOT George's mother...but that does not mean that Eli is not his father...it could mean that Eli was married prior to his marriage to Charlotte...ONLY I cannot find a record of a prior marriage...

Then there is the issue of the last name being spelled differently!!! HELP!!!

Can anyone help me to figure this out? Are Wilson and Willison interchangable as far as names go? Does anyone know if Eli Wilson was married prior to his marriage to Charlotte Growden??? Is George Willison the son of Eli Wilson or am I all screwed up in all of this scenario???

I would appreciate any and all help. Thank you so very much for your help - in advance!!!

I believe they were residing in Elerslie during this time period but was wondering if anyone knows where they came from?

My great-great-grandfather, Robert C. Purdy, wrote a letter from the "U.S. general hospital" in Cumberland where he was a patient in June, 1865. Can anyone point me to any background or history on this hospital? I understand some soldiers who died at the hospital were interred in the Antietam Cemetery, but were others buried in other, Cumberland area, cemeteries? The place and date of Robert Purdy's death are unknown, and I'm wondering if he may have died in the hospital. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

I will be going to Cumberland to locate some gravesites at Davis Memorial Cemetery, St. Mary's Cemetery, and St. Peter and Paul Cemetery. I would like to locate where in the cemetery the gravesites are as time will be limited so I can't just walk the cemetery to find them. Can anyone tell me who to contact and each of the cemeteries and how to contact them? Thanks in advance for your help.

Does anyone happen to have the names of the men arrested in violence that erupted during the George's Creek Coal Mine strikes in Lonaconing. This would have been the summer of 1900. I find newspaper articles that talk about the incident, that there were arrests, indictments and later prison sentences...William Warren of the United Mine Workers, who was the "organizer" is the only one ever mentioned by name that I can find - but this information must be somewhere!

Thanks in advance!

Crissy

My ancestors, Thomas and Elizabeth STEPHENS along with their son Moses and his new wife Eliza and Thomas' five other children (George, William Henry, Lewis Gwilliam, Augusta Jane and Agnes Elizabeth) emigrated from Gloucestershire England to Allegany Co. @ 1847. The men
worked in the iron industry near Mt.Savage and Cumberland. The daughters married in Maryland; Augusta to Joseph Ring and Agnes to Job Stevens. I beleive Thomas and Elizabeth died in Maryland. By 1860 Moses, Eliza and their four Maryland born children moved on to nearby Ice's Ferry VA. (now W.V.)

Does this sound familar to anyone? I'm looking for more info and connections through the Ring and Stevens families.

ALso, does SKS have access to ship's passenger records through the Port of Baltimore? I'm specifically looking for the exact date, ship, etc of the Stephens family's emigration.

Many thanks!
C.H. Wood
This may have been discussed before, if so I apologize.
Allegany Co. was formed in 1789 from Washington Co. but the federal census only reflects Washington County. Is anyone certain that the residents of the current locales of Allegany & Garrett Counties were enumerated with Washington County? It is hard to tell since the 1790 census doesn't give any locations for the folks that were counted.

Looking for information on how to obtain a marriage record for Cumberland, Maryland in the 1937-38 time period. Where are these located and what is the process ??
This is for my Parents; James Zimmerman and Evelyn Ruth Harris. Legend has it that they were married in Cumberland, Maryland. They were both of age and from Pennsylvania but there must have been some incentive to come to Maryland. Was it the Capital of quickie marriages ??
Thank you for any help you can provide.

I am researching my family tree which includes the Shannon Family who lived in Frostburg beginning in the early 1900's.
They came to Frostburg from Springfield, Hampshire, West Virginia. Edgar W. Shannon and his wife Louise had 13 children, some born in WV and some in Allegany county(my mother, Virginia Florence Shannon Bader was the 12th child). Edgar was born in Springfied in about 1872, the son of Jeremiah Chadwick Shannon and Florence Bryan Shannon. They had three sons, Edgar W., Benjamin,b.1874, and C. Jeremiah,b.1876. I have been unable to find Louise Shannon,s maiden name. I believe she was born in 1875 in the District of Columbia. Need some help! Thank you

Greetings,

I am researching the Dowlan surname in Allegany County. Members of the family arrived around 1900 from Berkeley County, West Virginia. Specifically, the family of Stoner Simon Dowlan is of interest to me. I've mined all the data I can from Ancestry.com, so I'm looking for any additional material. I would especially like to contact any other descendents of Dowlans from Allegany County.

Steve Dowlan
Sagesprrow@aol.com

I am trying to find out what happened to the Bunce family that lived in Allegany County in the 1800's. Did they move, marry into different families, or just die out? The Bunce family in Allegany County are an early branch of my ancestor's Bunce line from Baltimore. I completely lose track of them in the early 1900's though and am curious about what may have happened to them.

Bill Manzke
bmanzke@columbus.rr.com
Yvonne of Cumberland, Allegany, MD (b. 1938)

I am trying to find information on Yvonne of Cumberland, Allegany, MD (b. 1938). All I know for sure is her birth mother, Nettie Mae Garland (born 1914 in or near Allegany COunty MD and died 1970 in Cumberland, Allegany, MD)

Nettie had 3 children. Besides Yvonne she had Johanna (Sissy) and Oliver (Butch) Wallace.

Family believes she may have been born Yvonne Harding around 1938 in Cumberland. They also believe she married a Valentine but her mother, Nettie's obituary listed her as "Yvonne Davis, address unknown". She may have had 2 children, one of whom may have been named Vickie.

If anyone is near the courthouse, I would appreciate knowing Yvonne's actual birth name and birth father's name. I don't know how they are indexed - hopefully they have a computer? And marriages of Nettie Mae Garland.

The family lost touch years ago and wish to reunite. Yvonne would be nearly 70 now. Vickie may be in her 40s?.

Nettie was my grandmother and I have pictures and info if anyone is interested.

Thanks, Stella1119@comcast.net

Wm. and Annie CRUPPER/Fauquier Co., VA>Cumberland, MD

Dear Listers:

Seeking information on William H CRUPPER, b. 1833 in Paris, Fauquier Co., VA (s/o Eli Crupper and Frances Bosteyon), who died sometime after 1900 in Allegany Co., MD.

In the 1850 census, he is listed with his parents and siblings in the Ashby Division of Fauquier Co., VA (no occupation listed).

William H CRUPPER married Sarah Catherine DAVIS on 08 Jul 1857 in Frederick Co., MD (source: "Maryland Marriages" on Ancestry.com) [forgot to write down years in book, 1870-1899??]. She is listed as a DAVID. Sarah also went by the middle/nick name of Annie.

Census info, and other, for Wm and Annie CRUPPER (also makes up timeline):

1860--SW Revenue Dist., Fauquier Co. VA (occupation Miller). 1866--signed a petition in Baltimore City. [Source: Md. Genealogical Society Bulletin, Vol. 35, No. 1, Winter 1994, page 100] 1870--First Revenue District, PO Warrenton, Fauquier Co., VA (Occupation Laborer). 1880--Mercer, Loudoun Co., VA (Occupation Carpenter). By 1890, William is listed in the City Directory for Cumberland as follows, "William H Crupper Carpenter 7 Wine Cumberland MD." 1900--not listed.

Sarah Catherine "Annie" Davis was born ca. 1842 in VA and died 23 Dec 1915 in Cumberland. She is buried at the German Lutheran Cemetery. It is possible that William is also buried there.

She is listed in the 1900 census with her son, Charles William, and his family, being aged 58w, occupation dress maker. I do not know where she is in the 1910 census.

Taken from all the census data, Wm and Annie had the following children: Amanda E, Eloise, Mary F, Charles William, and Evaline. There is one more child not listed in the census data, because he falls in between census takings, and that's Hubert (b. 9/1871, d. 10/1871). Annie was the one who was the informant on his death in Fauquier Co., VA.

In Annie's obit (Excerpts from "The Cumberland Times" transcribed by Charles Often--December 1915), it states that she died at age 73 years, was the widow of the late William Crupper. She was survived by four of her children--3 girls and one boy.

From this obit (and my own knowledge of my family), I was able to trace her living children.

***Amanda E CRUPPER (1858-1934) married James A JONES (1854-1935) on 26 Oct 1876 in Cumberland. They had Maud, Anna Virginia, Channing Lee (male), Lina E, James Clifford and Edgar.

[Note: I believe Amanda was the reason why her parents and siblings came to Allegany County, since she was married there, and her parents and siblings were not in the 1880 census for Cumberland. Amanda and James are my ancestors, through their son, Channing.]

Eloise was born ca. 1859 but is not listed in the 1880 census with her parents. She is listed in the 1860 and 1870 census. Possibly died by 1880 in Loudoun Co., VA.

Mary F (b. 4/1864) married a Harmon Englehart (b. 2/1851, GER) ca. 1887, location unknown (possibly MD). They were found in the 1900 census for Center Township, Delaware Co., IN, with the following children: Anne (b. MD), Alice (b. PA), Raymond (b. MD), James (b. IN) and Edgar (b. IN). They were then found in the 1910 census for City of Pittsburg, (part of) 20th Ward, Tract T?, Allegheny Co., PA, with two added children to the mix: Earl and Virginia, both b. PA. I could not find them in MD, IN or PA for the 1920 or 1930 census.

Charles William (b. 1866) married a Sophia (1870, b. MD) UNK ca. 1895 in Allegany. I have them from the 1900 to 1930 census for Ward 6, Cumberland. They had only two children: Hazel P and William G. William can be found in both the 1920 census with his parents (taken 1/8/1920) and then in the Military and Naval Census of the same year (taken 3/23/1920). I do know he served in the Navy and was stationed on the USS South Dakota in Kobe, Japan, in the 1920s (per military census).

Evaline (b. 3/1868; d. after 1930) married Lewis R RICE (b. 3/1870; d. 1920-1930) ca 1892 in Allegany. I have the couple in the 1900-1920 census, with "Lina" being a widow in the 1930 census (her own household). From these census records, I got a little more lucky than with the rest. Lewis and Lina had three children born, 2 living. Lilly (b. ca. 1895 and listed as Lily and Lillie) and Mabel (b. ca. 1902).

Lily is listed in the 1920 census with her parents, her husband and children. She married Frank John (or John Frank, depending on the census year) PORTER, between 1920-1924 in Allegany. He was born ca. 1895 in MD. They had Gladys, Virginia and Dorothy. This family is again listed in the 1930 census with her mother. Same husband, no more children.

Mabel is listed in the 1930 in the household of her mother, as 29s, but under the surname HOLLAND. I'm assuming she was divorced or widowed by this time. She has two children with her, Maxine and Margie.

Does anyone know of any of these people? Where they might have died or been buried? Any marriage dates on any of William and Annie's children?

Thank you so much for listening to my long winded posting.

Sincerely,
Tina McKie
French Creek, WV

James Smith's grandson's Franklin, James & Harrison Beall, Cumberland, MD

We are hoping to make contact with descendants of James Smith's grandson's Franklin Buchanan (3 Dec 1857), James F.B. , (22 Oct 1855) and Harrison S. Beall (8 Apr 1856), in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland.

James Smith (b. abt. 1791, Va) and Maria Hoffman (b. abt. 1795, MD). They were married October 29, 1816, in Allegany County. Accordinng to the Allegany County, Maryland 1850 census he was a cabinet maker and he had a sister named Elizabeth, b. abt. 1789.

Children of James and Maria: Elizabeth, David, James, Augustus (Gus), Lucinda and Ann Marie.

We are hoping that James Smith's grandson's descendants could tell us where James was born and who his parents and siblings were. Since Mineral and Hampshire counties in Virginia (now WV) border Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, it is probably that our Smith line came from that area.

On the 1850 Mineral County census it lists James Smith's oldest son David Smith, b. abt. 1819, so we need help to find out if our Smith ancestors came from one of these counties. We have found a James and David Smith on the 1784 Hampshire County, Virginia Tax List, however, we cannot make a connection on this new info.

All help in finding information on our Smith line is very much appreciated.

Son Max, a graduate of Allegany High School class of 1936, was killed in an auto accident, date unknown. A note in the high school newsletter (date unknown) remarks that Max Morrison, a recent graduate of Allegany High School, was killed returning home from a fishing trip to the eastern shore. Max had an older sister, Eleanor. Last information I have notes that Mrs. Morrison and daughter Eleanor Stewart attended my grandmother' funeral in Ohiopyle, PA.in 1938.

My gr-gr-grandfather, Charles Henry (E)isentrout, was born in Hanover and immigrated around 1854 to the Frostburg area. He is buried in Frostburg Memorial Cemetery with the spelling Iesantrout on his tombstone.
On a recent trip to the Allegany County Courthouse I found the marriage records for his children with the spelling varying as Eisentrout or Isentrout. I was disappointed to learn that birth and death records were at the Health Department as I did not have time to go there also. Are death dates and birth dates in record books that can be viewed? Do they have records before 1940?
These are the children of Charles Henry Eisentrout and his wife Mary Ann Elisabeth Fee (or Fea). I would love to hear from anyone having any connection to them.

Charles Henry Eisentrout 1833 - 1932
+Mary Ann Elizabeth Fee	1840 - 1907
.....Henrietta Caroline Eisentrout 1860 - 1920
.....Charles Henry Eisentrout II 1861 - 1935
......+Anna Rebecca JONES 1863 - 1899
......+2nd Wife Lucinda COONS 1868 -
.....Amanda Eisentrout 1864 - 1938
......+William WHITEHEAD 1860 - 1943
.....Mary Elizabeth Eisentrout 1866 - before 1880
.....Rebecca Eisentrout	1867 - after 1942
......+Benjamin Franklin DENNISER 1854 - before 1920
.....Phoebe Eisentrout	1869 - after 1935
......+Edward E.
Looking for William Harmon Michaels (1840-1918)

Hi,

I am trying to trace the family of William Harmon Michaels (1840-1918). I believe that he was born in Allegany County. I am told that the family would "come down from the mountain" and stay in a "summer house" near Oakland. I assume that the referenced mountain is Big Savage Mountain. For whatever reason, I cannot find any trace of William in Maryland. He was born in January 1840 and I am told that his father's name was Philip (I believe this is from his death certificate...I'm currently waiting to get a copy of it). He moved to Fayette County, PA before 1862 as he was married there. He then moved to Somerset County, PA and then back to Fayette, where he died in 1918.

Please, anyone, help me find this man's family! I have been searching for a few years now, but to no avail.
Ray Michaels

ROBERT A. BRUCE

Civil War Colonel Robert Bruce of Cumberland (d 1890) had a son named Robert A. Bruce who resided in Hagerstown.

Robert A. Bruce was later called Col. Robert A. Bruce. I am trying to find out how the son of the Civil War colonel obtained the title of Colonel.

The first wife of Robert A. Bruce was MAGDALINE, whose death occurred in 1882. He is called "Col." in her death notice.

In 1893, Col. Robert Bruce had a cafe and restaurant in the Public Square and had married a widow lady in New Orleans.

On the Allegany County MDGenWeb site, I see that Robert Bruce wrote about the National Road between Allegany County and Wheeling, WV. Does anyone know if this is the same man described above? Was he the son of the Civil War Colonel Robert Bruce who died in 1890?

Thanks in advance for information.

Lonaconing fire--Sept. 7, 1881

In researching my family history, I was reading a portion of the book "History of Western Maryland. . ." by J. Thomas Schargf, A.M., that was sent to me by a cousin. According to the book, a fire broke out in a stable at the back of P.T. Tally & Co.'s store that destroyed ". . .all the business portion of the town extending from the Merchants' Hotel on Bridge Street, near the Cumberland and Pennsylvania depot, to Main Street, and on both sides of Main Street to Castle Run, taking in about ten acres of ground." (p.1508).

I would really appreciate it if anyone has access to the newspaper of that time, if they could PLEASE e-mail or snail-mail me any articles about this fire--I believe it holds the key as to why my family left Lonaconing. If anyone knows if access to the paper is available on-line, I would love to do further research on it as well. (I live several states away, and visiting the library is not an option).

Several of you have been very helpful in the past, and I thank you so, so much for that. I would be most grateful for any assistance that you can give me now.

Thanks!

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Cumberland, Alleganey County, Maryland as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: CHARLES MOYE JONES
Born: October 24, 1918, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 20, 1953, Killed in Action (KIA)

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 56 families in Maryland that have not been located. There is one family from Cumberland that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial.
Rev. McClure's Denomination?

Hi,

My ancestors (William Michael/Michaels & Hiley Fazenbaker) were married in 1859 by a Rev. Thomas McClure. I have been unable to find out anything about him though, and I was hoping that I could find the church the family attended, or, at the very least, what denomination they belonged to. I hope to one day find baptismal records for their children. One problem I have encountered is the fact that I don't know what city they lived in. All I have are census records, which merely give "4th Election District," but they give the post office as Westernport, so I assume that they fell under that municipality. However, William died in 1864 in Barton.

Anyway, I am trying to find Rev. McClure's denomination and, from there, track down church records in the Westernport area.

Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Richard

Brown Family of Lonaconing and Cumberland

I have reached a dead end on my family history research and am hoping someone out there can help!

I am looking for ANY information on a Brown family that lived in Western Maryland (Cumberland and Lonaconing) in the mid to late 1800s.

Jacob Brown married Helena (I've seen her name as Lena and Alina as well). Helena/Lena's maiden name may have been Holsopple. They had the following children: Caspar, William (born May 17, 1868), Charlotta, Henry, Richard, Mary, Ida and Lilly. William is the ancester I am interested in...he lived in Lonaconing until 1900, when suddendly, he relocated his family to Charleroi, PA and changend his surname. Does this ring a bell to anyone? I'm trying to understand why he did this. It seems that he did keep in touch with his family after his move to PA.

William Brown married Martha Gordon (her parents were John Gordon and Christina Hardy) and had the following children: Mary, Euphemia, Lena, George, Christina, Lauretta and James. William died Sept. 1, 1947.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Crissy

The firm KENNEDY & COX, 1800-1810

I would be interested in learning more about a company that went by the name Kennedy & Cox. This firm existed in the early part of the 19th century. I'd like to know who Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Cox were, the type of business they had and how long they were in business.

My interest in this company stems from a lawsuit they filed against my ancestor, Archibald Hood, in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1806 (Archibald Hood was a resident of Greene County, PA). They were successful in prosecuting their claim and when it ended in 1810, it nearly left Archibald Hood bankrupt.

The court records in Greene County do not identify where this firm was located, but I'm making an educated guess that it was in Cumberland.

I'd be interested in comparing notes with anyone who knows something about the company.

Thanks!

Seek Info on John W. HUTZELL of Mt. Savage

I would like to hear from anyone who can tell me whether John Walter HUTZELL, born PA. 29 Jan 1885, died MD, Jun 1974 was at one time married to Leola Essie GUNTER JOYNER, the widow of Ben JOYNER of Bulloch Co. GA. Essie, as she was called, died in Savannah in 1957 while visiting her daughters who lived there. Her obit indicates that she was then married to John W. HUTZELL and was a resident of Mount Savage, MD. I am thinking that this John W. HUTZELL was in fact John Walter Hutzell, born 29 Jan 1885 in PA, died Jun 1974 in MD. This John Walter HUTZELL was a resident of Mt. Savage. Regards, Tom

I'm looking for anyone by this name around Cumberland, ca. 1834-1836. I know there should be at least two families in the area during this time, (Johann) Henry Muckerheide and Bernard Henry Muckerheide. According to their naturalization records, they came from Germany (Bremen>Baltimore) in 1834 and "went immediately to Cumberland" where they stayed for two years before moving to Indiana. If anyone comes across this name, please contact me.
