obituaries

I have approximately 2000 or more obituaries, weddings, funerals, that I have been typing into files of people who first resided in the Carroll County area. Most of these obituaries were taken from The Evening Sun in Hanover, PA and others were taken from the Balitmore Sun. These date back to the early 1900's. They were clipped out of the newspapers by my great-grandmother and grandmother. These were friends of the family as well as relatives. Some of the surnames include Airing, Arter, Bachman, Baughman, Bair, Bechtel, Baker, Bankert, Baumgardner, Berwager, Bollinger, Bowman, Brillhart,Brown, Brumgard, Copenheaver (spelled different ways), Crouse, Crowl, Dubs, Feeser, Flickinger, Fuhrman, Frock, Gobrecht, Houck, Yingling, Lawyer, Leppo, Masenheimer,Sterner, Tasto,Weaver, Wildasin, Zepp. At present, I have put into files at least 570 files.

Some of these have written in dates, but I'm not sure if they are all correct. Please contact me if any of these surnames are included in your family.

Mrs.Waylette (Willet) Kaltenrutter, Kaltrieder, Coltrider, Caltrider)

I would like to find the maiden name of Waylette or Willet who married Johan George Peter Kaltenrutter (Kaltenreider, Kaltrieder or Coltrider). I know she was born between 1750-60. They christened all of their children in the Reformed Church in Manchester from 1783- 90s). I have checked the various sponsors for these baptisms hoping to find her maiden name, but have not uncovered a relationship. They lived on Maple Grove Road in Manchester purchasing the farm that was originally Boring Meadows and renaming it Caltrider's Fancy. Before that, they lived in Shrewsbury, York, PA from 1774-83.I have not been able to find a marriage record in PA or MD for them. From a Caltrider bible, I have discovered that she died on 13 May 1842 in Maryland.
Nancy Neal

I'm looking for information on Nicholas Steele who died about Aug 1879 in Carroll Co., MD. He was in his 20s and worked as a farm laborer and died from "galloping consumption" which sounds like a virulent form of TB, supposedly he lasted six weeks from the time he was first strickened until his death. He was married to a Mary Catherine Hartman, born abt 1858 in western Virginia, and they had two children: Laura Mae, born Mar 1877-died 1893 and is buried at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Libertytown, Frederick Co., MD, and a son Hezekiah Nicholas, born May 1879.

Is anyone familiar with this cemetery and its records? According to her 1905 death certificate, my gr gr gr grandmother Sarah Dandy is buried at the "Catholic Cemetery - Manchester, Carroll Co" and I am assuming this is it. I haven't been able to locate her husband Gregory Dandy and was hoping to find him buried with her there.

The parents were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Silverson of New Ulm, MN. That's all it says. My father purchased two old scrapbooks at an estate action in Hampstead, Maryland years ago containing this card. The Taney family was from Carroll county, Maryland. The only other names in these scrapbooks are Bessie Estelle Taney and Catherine Taney.
Please contact me if interested.

Dr. Elijah J. Cook of New Windsor, Carroll Co., MD

Hello,
I am researching the family of Elijah J. Cook from New Windsor, Carroll Co., MD. Here is the information I have on this family so far.

I am the gg-grandaughter of his daughter Katie. I have a copy of her obituary which lists her parents as Dr. and Mrs. E.J. Cook of Maryland. My great aunt (my grandmother's sister) told me that E.J. stands for Elijah John, and that he was her g-grandfather. Other than this I have no info on him.

As for his daughter Katie, I have seen her listed as Katie McKnew Cook, (her son's obit) Katherine Minerva Cook (her own obit)and Catherine (Katie) M. Cook Fritz (a Fritz family history file) of Carroll Co., MD. (Notice 2 surnames, and 1 married name, Fritz)

We have a letter that Katie's brother, Oscar, wrote to one of her children in 1891, so we know she had a brother named Oscar Cook.

Today I found and online census record that listed:
1880 Carroll Co., MD

Minerva Cook, b.1830
Age 50
Race - White
Mar. Status - Widow
Head of household
Occupation - Farmer
Father's Birthpalce - MD
Mother's Birthplace - MD

She had 3 grown children and a single sister in her household-

Oscar Cook b.1858 Age 22 Son Single White
Birthplace MD
Katie Cook b.1860 Age 20 Dau Single White
Birthplace MD
Marshall Cook b. 1862 Age 18 Son Single White
Birthplace MD

Katie McKnees b. 1828 Age 52 Sister Single White
Birthplace MD

I am quite certain that this is my family that I am looking for. McKnees throws me off a bit because I thought that my ggg-grandmother Minerva's maiden name was McKnew, that is why it was one of her daughter Katie's given names. I have still found no record of Elijah as of yet.

If anyone has info on this family, please email me at Gettybug603@aol.com.

Thank You,
Heather LeCoq

Good afternoon. I am trying to find more information on the family of Elijah Dorsey. He is listed in the 1840 & 1850 (Freedom District) census. The 1850 record states that he was born in PA. The 1850 census shows:

Elijah Dorsey age 48 born PA
Ann age 47 born MD
Andrew J age 17 born MD
Ruth (?) A age 13 born MD
Catharine age 10 born MD
George T W age 6 born MD
Winfield S age 2 born MD

Elijah died before 1860 - census records show Ann in her daughter Catharine's household (Catharine's husband is listed as John Berry - a hotel keeper).

Andrew J Dorsey is nowhere to be found until the 1880 census in Montgomery County and disappears again after that. His wife is shown as Martha E (maiden name unknown).

I am interested in any information anyone may have on Elijah & Ann's parents and siblings. Also, any information on their children, specifically Andrew J and his wife.

Thank you for your help.

Dianna Raiford Andersen

Jacob CALTRIDER b. 1779 m. (1) Temperance LEMMON in Balto. Co., MD

Would like to verify that Jacob CALTRIDER, born 10/20/1779, possibly in PA, was the Jacob CALLRIDER who married Temperance LEMMON by Baltimore County, MD, license dated 11/3/1813. According to DAR records, Temperance was born on 3/12/1786 in Maple Valley, Baltimore Co., on 3/12/1786, one of the seven daughters of Alexis LEMMON and Rachel STANSBURY. Also according to those records, Temperance m. ___ COLTRIDER. Temperance died on 11/9/1814 at age of 28 years and 8 months (Carroll County Cemeteries, Vol. IV: Norhteast, Westminster, Maryland: Carroll County Genealogical Society, p. 23). Temperance Koltrider was buried at the Lemmon Famiy Cemetery near present-day Shalk [Shauck] Road in that area of Baltimore Co. which became Carroll Co. (John SHAUCK, her brother-in-law, and wife migrated to OH the following year.) Her mother, Rachel (STANSBURY) LEMMON, d. in 1823 and was buried in the same cemetery. Soon thereafter, her father Alexis migrated to OH, where he d. in 1826.

Jacob CALTRIDER m. Sarah ("Sally") FRONK (or FRANK) on or about 8/17/1821, and he died between 1859 and 1867 in Carroll Co., MD. Jacob's sister Margaretha was born 9/20/1787 and died on 2/12/1857. As Margaret COLTRIDER, she m. George STANSBURY by Baltimore County license dated 3/10/1812. According to Michael PORTS in 1985, she "was buried next to her husband in the Hampstead cemetery, but unfortunately there is no date on her stone." (John CALTRIDER, Jr., brother of Jacob and Margaret, m. Rachel Ann TIPTON in 1817. According to Carl CALTRIDER in 1997, John and Rachel probably were from the Maple Grove area near Hampstead. Their remains were buried at Zion Church Cemetery in Freeland, MD.) I believe that it was Margaret CALTRIDER whose remains were buried in the Stansbury Family Cemetery in Carroll Co. The name is shown as Anna Margaret STANSBURY, and the dates are the same as those of Margaretha CALTRIDER (Carroll County Cemeteries, Vol. IV, p. 9). The only conflict is that the Comments column of that page identify John as her husband, whereas other records show George (i.e., STANSBURY). In the same cemetery, there is a marker for a John STANSBURY (no dates). Was Margaret m. twice? Why were the remains of her and George STANSBURY buried in different cemeteries. Also, can anyone identify that George STANSBURY or provide other information on him, such as his date of death? By the way, George CALTRIDER [brother of Jacob, John, Margaret, et al.) made his will in April 1831, which was witnessed by John STANSBURY among others (Carrolltonian, Vol. XXIV, no. 1, Sept. 2004, p. 5). The remains of George, his wife Elizabeth [nee FRINGER], and Daniel [his brother, husband of Keziah nee BOSLEY] were buried in the Caltrider Family Cemetery near 3740 Maple Grove Rd., near Manchester.
POW/MIA Korean War, Carroll Co. DAMEWOOD

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Carroll County, Maryland as his home of record. His remains were never recovered

Soldier: LOUIS ASHBY DAMEWOOD
Born: March 11, 1929, Caucasian
Date of loss: Feb. 13, 1951, Prisoner of War (POW)

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 56 families in Maryland that have not been located. There is one family from Carroll County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Susannah Loveall's adm. account, Carroll Co., January of 1839 states that she had a brother (dec'd) named John Beyers of Kentucky, settled by David Lemmon. Her executor and adm. of her estate was her son John Evans, also listed were another son William Carter, and a daughter Cathrina Loveall. I think I have traced the Beyers to Harrison Co., KY but they were from the Maryland area before theyt went to KY. Casper Beyer, born Cannstatt, Wurtemberg,
Germany, abt 1719, died bef. 1836, married a Catherine. Had son John Beyers born abter 1752 in Germany, died KY before 1850. John had a sister Elizabeth who married David Lemmon. Some of the Beyers stayed around here. Anyone know of the Beyers family? Casper supposed to have had 13 children.

Is there anyone that in related to or doing any research on the GOSNELL'S of the Westminster area in Carroll Co., MD?
I am looking particularly for anyone with extensive information on Ambrose, Nathan and Tobias Gosnell. There were 3 sisters Martha, Ellen and Anna.
The information I am seeking is that in the 1850 census, the household of James Gosnell, mispelled Gasnell, my great grandmother is Ann, she and her brother and her mother are in the census as "Haines" but when Ann was married to my great grandfather, she was a Gosnell. In later census, Tobias was listed as Nathan's brother and a "Gosnell".
In the 1860 census, James is gone and Eva is listed as a widow but retains the "Haines" names.
I can only surmise one of three reasons. That Eva was either James' daughter or that she was James' 2nd wife or some sort of Scottish/Irish tradition.

Any help, please...
Thank you

Frederick Co. MD Land Record, Liber W.R. 24, Folio 409, 17 May 1803, shows a John BROWN of Wilkes Co., NC, as son and heir to property (Bell's Choice/Brown's Neglect, near Mayberry Road, Union Mills/Silver Run) of Daniel BROWN, who died 1802. Other heirs: Margaret BROWN, Daniel's wife; Margaret DAPPER (TOPPER), his daughter; Andrew DAPPER (TOPPER), his son-in-law.

I have been trying to verify info found in Ancestry's family tree databases that John BROWN, b. 1753 in MD, m. Susanna WEAKLAND, d. 1820 Cambria Co. PA, was the son of the above-mentioned Daniel BROWN.

Apparently not, unless John made a quick trip to NC in the early 1800's, presuming the information in the land records is accurate.

Is anyone researching this family?

There is a photo at the Harford County Historical society that has his nephew, Edward Tredway Monks standing next to it. ANY clues are helpful. Regards, Diana

Andreas (Andru) Berkebeil

In the book “Pennsylvania Births – York County 1730 –1800” John T. Humphrey, Larjon & Company, Inc. Washington, D.C., 1998; I came across these two birth records on page 164

Surname Heckeleible
Child Birth or Baptism Father Mother Church
Andreas 15 Jun 1756 Andreas Not Given 3
Maria Catherine 1 Jan 1759 Andreas Not Given 3

Where the church is listed on page vii as:

Records of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Hanover; birth records from 1742 are included.

The question I pose to fellow Berkebile/ Purkepile / Birckenbuel researchers and others who may know or have an interest. Could this possibly be Andreas (Andru) Birkenbeil’s children. It is known that Andru had a son named Andreas, I had not heard or have not seen any reference to a daughter named Maria Catherine. Possibly she did not make past childhood. If you look at the surname the logic I applied is as follows: The first letter and third letter could have been distorted in transcription or translation.
I have recently found my great uncle, Samuel ROSE, age nine, living with a Hannah DOUGHERTY according to the 1880 US Census. Hannah was the widow of James DOUGHERTY and she lived near Sykesville with her five children: Andrew, Edward, Hannah, Sarah and Mary. I know that Samuel ROSE eventually moved to Philadelphia, PA where he married and raised a family. I am hoping to find information on the DOUGHERTYS that might lead to information on Samuel ROSE'S father.

Adam Wentz/Wantz, born abt 1790 +/-

I am trying to sort out the families and descendants of 2 different Adam Wentz.

One Adam Wentz was born Apr 3 1791 in Carroll Co MD, s/o Adam Wentz (1751-1815) and Catherine Krebbs. He received land in his fathers will, proved Mar 8 1815 [in Balt. Co]: In the will Adam (Sr) devised all his land to son Adam excluding 17 1/2 acres (part of Stumps Lot and Smithfield) which he devised to his son John. This 17 1/2 acres lay on the Lineboro Rd, nr the Manchester-Hanover Rd. Adam (Jr) was an executor of the Will. I need information on his marriage and children, where he lived.

Another (?) Adams Wantz lived in Heidelberg Twp, York Co in 1820, 1830 and 1850 census. In 1850 his household was Adam Wantz, 61, Eliz, 59, Emanuel 24, Mary [Molly?] 23, Mary 24, Emeline 9 mo (p352#34); Jacob, 22, lives next door. Adam Wantz is named as an heir in the Will of Jacob Wantz, dated Jan 27 1816, Manheim Twp, York Co PA. I need his birth or baptism record.

An Adam Wantz and wife Elizabeth had children baptized at Emmanuel Reformed Church, Hanover PA. I believe this is the family of the second Adam Wantz.
. Nancy b. Nov 15 1808, bap. Sep 4 1810
. Sara b. Jun 9 1817, bap. Jul 29 1828
. Immanuel b. Jul 12 1818, bap. Jul 29 1828
. Adam b. Mar 6 1819, bap.Jul 29 1828
. Samuel b. Aug 9 1821, bap. Jul 29 1828
. Teresia b. Sep 22 1823, bap. Jul 29 1828
. Mary Ann b.

I believe that the name above may be the Elizabeth who married a Levi Harvey Barnes. They later lived in Baltimore city and had one daughter named Naomi. Any info on Lizzie's mother or father would be pprecaited. I presume since she is shown as a granddaughter of John/Elizabeth Baker that she was the daughter of one of their daughters and came to live with them presumably after her parents died. This is conjecture on my part.

A Barb FREYVOGEL b 1770 MD, marriage???

Hello,

I am (still) looking for the maiden name of the Anna Barbara who married my ancestor, John HAHN abt. 1802. I am checking each eligible Anna Barbara that I can find among the Maryland church records where my John Hahn lived, prior to his moving "with his new bride" to Columbiana County, Ohio, abt. 1803.

Does anyone know to whom Christopher and Catharine FREYVOGEL's daughter A. Barbara married? I know that she was confirmed in 1785 at the age of 16, making her born abt. 1770. I also know that she was still single in 1801 - quite late to still be single, but that is what the church records show.

Thank you for _any_ help!
Jane Moore
