I am looking for information on John Brown Rowan born around 1837 and killed at the Battle of Nashville on Dec. 16, 1864. Brown was a prominent citizen of Elkton and a member of the Elkton Bar. He married Sarah Howard in 1857. I know of one daughter, Charlesanna Rowan. Capt. Rowan was the capt. of the 3rd Battalion MD Artillery CSA. He fought in and around Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Chickamauga and Nashville from the beginning of the Civil War until his death. His body was returned to Elkton for burial at the Presbyterian cemetary, internment in May 1865. He is my husband's great grandmother, Sadye Clendenin Shinnick's grandfather.

I have contacted the Cecil County Historical Society and have received information from the Democrate several brief mentions of their wedding and his death. I am searching for birth records, marriage records or death records. I would also like to find out more about their extended families. Sarah Howard's father was from Elkton, Col. Thomas Howard. After the Civil War Sarah Howard remarried William Ritter, a lifelong friend of John B Rowan and his second in command during the Civil War. He was from Carroll County.

Any information would be appreciated, thank you.

Sincerely,

Pam Shinnick
