(O)LOUGHRAN

Ó Luachráin, (spelt Ó Luchairen in the Annals of Ulster) now anglicized as Loughran, is the name of a distinguished ecclesiastical family located in Co. Armagh [in NE Ireland].
The most prominent of them were:
Thomas O'Loughran (d. 1416), Dean of Armagh;
Father Patrick O'Loughran, who was executed with the Bishop of Down & Connor in 1612;
Father John O'Loughran of the same diocese who died in prison in 1576;
and Father Nellan Loughran, O.F.M., of Armagh, another martyr whom the Cromwellians hanged in 1652.

Friar O'Mellan, in his journal of the war in Ulster (1641 to 1647), mentions four different O'Loughrans, members of the Franciscan order: the diary is written in Irish and he spells the name 0 Laochthren. Spelling variants of Loughran include Laugheran and Lochrane.

One peculiar synonym is recorded by Matheson for the Dungannon district, where Loughran and Early were both used by members of the same family. This is explained as follows; Loughran was connected popularly with Loughrey; and since Loughrey is Ó Luatheirghigh (i.e. descendant of the early riser) Early, Mohery etc., became confused with Loughrey and Loughran.
