Seeking Rebecca RINGGOLD 1818 - 1883

Rebecca Ringgold was born 16 Nov 1818 in Maryland. On 2 Apr 1845, she married John Holliday Cummins. From 1850 until her death, I show her and her family living in Galena, Maryland. She is buried, along with her husband, at the Olivet Cemetery in Galena.

Through process of elimination, I've concluded that her parents were Thomas (1799-) and Rebecca Bolton. However, this is based on Schoch's information, so I have no conclusive proof.

I'm hoping to find a record of her birth, and some small bit of proof of her parentage. Saying her father's name is "Thomas Ringgold" isn't that far-fetched, considering how many people claimed that name at the time.

Thank you for any help.

Harry Leland Baker (1897-1981) Chestertown, MD

According to an obituary I have located, my grandfather Harry Leland Baker was buried in Chester Chemetery in Chestertown, Maryland. He moved to Kent County, Maryland, from Indiana in 1921. He died on April 19, 1981 at Queen Anne's Hospital. He was survived by his second wife, Mrs Elizabeth L. Baker, so she may be buried with him in the Chester Cemetery by now. He retired from LaMotte Chemical Company in 1975. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company and a 60-year member of Chester Lodge No. 114 A.F. & A.M. and OES Chapter No. 86. A Masonic Memorial service was held at the funeral home Tuesday evening, April 21, 1981. The Rev. Dallas Butler officiated. Since I live in Austin, Texas, it is highly unlikely that I will be able to visit his grave in Chestertown. Would it be possible for someone in Chestertown to obtain a photo of his gravesite (tombstone) for me (and that of his wife Elizabeth if she is buried with him? Any help or information will be appreciated. Ilo Hiller, Austin, Texas.

Hynson, Peregrine, death date and children

I hope you can answer some questions or pass on some sources.

Several family trees I’ve found have Rebecca Ellis marrying Peregrine Hynson in 1786 in Cecil Co. MD, then marrying John Carman in 1798, all this with Peregrine dying in 1799 after having children Sarah and Ann with Rebecca. These trees also have John Carman and Rebecca having children Mary, Rachel, Woodmance and John Carman.

I have my gg-grandfather Daniel Kendrick marrying Mary Hinson (I believe should be Hynson since no other Hinson in Cecil or Kent Co. MD in time frame) on 5 Dec. 1812 in Cecil Co. I also have a John Carnan (not Carman) of Cecil Co. marrying Rebecca Hynson on 13 Dec 1798. In addition, I have a letter from John Carnan written to Daniel Kendrick in 1818 (Daniel had removed to Ohio by then). Keeping in mind that in those days the distinction of son vs. son-in-law and daughter vs. step-daughter was usually not made, John in his letter addressed it to "My dear Son D Kendrick" and discussed in one place "my Daughters" and at the end "my love you, Mary, Rachel & children". He also discussed coming to Ohio (this is 1818) without mentioning his wife Rebecca whom these trees have dying in 1816. Since Daniel married Mary Hinson/Hynson and not Mary Carman/Carnan and if a true child of John post his marriage to Rebecca would have been at most 14 at marriage to Daniel, I have formed the following hypothesis:

Peregrine Hynson and Rebecca had a Mary (vice Sarah or Ann?) Hynson prior to Peregrine's death (or within 9 months) and there was no Mary Carnan. Rachel could have been a Carnan - younger sister going to Ohio to help sister Mary with her children (including my g-grandfather William Kendrick born in 1815 in Cecil Co.) Also note that census of that time (1810) has John Carnan vice Carman in MD.

Any ideas, comments, sources, or hints would be appreciated, sincerely,

Dave Bash
bashandoliver@msn.com

Kent Co. Coleman Records

NEED INFO ON SAMUEL JAMES COLEMAN, WESLEY COLEMAN, MARY E. COLEMAN, ALFRED E.COLEMAN, JOSEPH R. APSLEY & WM. P. FRANCIS CIRCA 1867 EDESVILLE, NEAR ROCK HALL, KENT CO. MD.

The record of the inventory and disposition of Samuel J. Coleman's estate (d.1867) is that of Samuel James Coleman, father of James Wesley Coleman, as one of the receivers of the property was a Wesley Coleman. These records give us an insight of Samuel James Coleman's life. It is clear that he was a farmer, growing corn and wheat and maintained sufficient livestock for his family's needs (cows, pigs, sheep). The records also give us hints of who his relatives and neighbors may have been. All of his estate was inventoried and sold. The majority of the household furnishings were purchased by Mary E. Coleman; Wesley Coleman purchased two corn crops in the field, farming equipment and a bed, stove pot and oven; Alfred E. Coleman purchased household items, a horse and a cultivator; William P. Francis purchased the majority of the livestock; and, Joseph R. Apsley (James Wesley Coleman's father-in-law) purchased farming equipment. It is reasonable that Mary E. Coleman and Alfred L. Coleman are close family members to Samuel James Coleman, perhaps children or his brother and sister. Additional documentation is needed to resolve the relationships.

Looking for father/mother of Upton King (born 1795) Georgetown Maryland. This could mean the Washington D.C. Georgetown or the Kent County Georgetown. Family tradition places Upton in Frederick Maryland after War of 1812 (Widow petitioned for pension, becoming a teamster on the National Pike. He finally married and settled in Menallen Township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. His father was supposed to have arrived in the colonies as a teenager. I'm checking Kent County's Georgetown even though the nearness of Frederick to D.C. makes the D.C. Georgetown option more credible.

I am descended from William Rolph, b. 1810 in Kent
County, d. 1883 in Caroline County. I know she is buried in St. Paul's, Hillsboro,
Caroline, Md.

Ancestry.com's transcription of William and Mary Ann's marriage records indicates her name was Farman; LDS records indicate her name was Jarman. If anyone could clarify her name for me, as well as provide any information on her parentage, I'd be grateful.

Confirmation that William Rolph's parents were indeed
James Rolph, 1784-1835 and Nancy Herren 1786 would be
very much appreciated.
Richard Pell was probably born in England around 1725-26. As the tale is told by his grandson (David Anderson), Richard got into trouble when he was about nine years old. He and friends were playing ball and their ball rolled into the sty of an old sow who had piglets. She was known to be vicious, so Richard took a rock with him when he went to retrieve the ball. The sow charged, Richard threw the rock, missed her but killed one of the piglets. For this, he was transported on the Forward Galley in 1737. The ship landed in Maryland and in Virginia. The family is aware that Richard's first son, William, was born in Kent Co. MD in 1760, so we suspect that he was bound over as an indenture to a blacksmith in Kent County, MD. Anyone who has information on Richard the pig killer, would be treasured and appreciated very much by me and several other researchers seeking record of our gggg-grandfather.
Kent Co MD Obituary/Death Record for Fritz Kircher

I am a hobby genealogist. I am trying to help a German hobby genealogist and friend locate the facts about a distant cousin who emigrated to the USA. Specifically, I am looking for assistance in finding an obituary or death record for a Fritz Kircher, born 6 Aug 1907 in Schoenhardt, Schwabisch Hall, Wuerttemberg, Germany, and whose last reported location in the USA per my research so far was in the Chestertown area of Kent County, MD. He emigrated from Wuerttemberg, Germany, to the USA on 17 Mar 1929. He arrived in the USA on or about 27 Mar 1929 via the port of NY. He is found in the 1930 census of Queen Anne's Co MD indexed as Fritz Kircherd (sic) living as a servant in the household of Ernest Eilrman. According to my German contact, the family in Germany having no contact with Fritz for many, many years, had him officially declared as dead as of 24 May 1968 in German records. I don't know the exact reason why. Possibly to settle an estate issue for the family in Germany, etc. However, I have found here in USA records that the Social Security Death Index reports a Fritz Kircher, born 6 Aug 1907, died in Apr 1983 with last known residence being Chestertown, Kent County, MD. Would someone knowledgeable with Kenty Co MD records be willing to look and see if you can find an obituary or death record for a Fritz Kircher either circa Apr/May 1968 or in Apr 1983? Also, possibly his name might be found in other records for Kent Co MD such as city directories, etc., during that time period. I would be particularly interested if there is any indication and additional evidence of his being alive after 1968 and of his possibly marrying at any time and having remaining family in Maryland or elsewhere in the USA. Any help will be sincerely appreciated.

Charles Kerchner
Emmaus PA
http://www.kerchner.com/contact.htm
Does anyone know the origins of Joseph Wickes of Kent County? I wonder if he is the Joseph Wickes 'of New England' in the will of his father Edward Wickes of Bristol,'Carpenter' which is in the Gloucestershire Record Office, U.K. dated 1642. Anyone interested in this family please email me.

Sarah and Mary 'Polly' RENCH, painters of miniatures, c1745-1806

Sarah Rench b. c1745 married James Claypoole Jr, portrait painter of Philadelphia and Mary Rench b. c1748 married (Judge)Jacob Rush, brother of Dr. Benjamin Rush. In his book, 'Reminiscences of a Very Old Man 1808-1897'(New York 1899, John Sartain wrote:- "Miss Polly Rench, sister to Mrs James Claypole, painted in miniature and had the merit of maintaining her mother and brother by the work of her pencil. She was a native of Maryland and probably first embraced the idea of painting from the connection of her sister, but of this I want information. She married Mr (Jacob) Rush, then a young practitioneer of Law since a judge." Additionally, Charles Willson Peale's biographer wrote that “Though Polly Wrench was a native of the Eastern Shore, he(Peale) met her here (in 1772)for the first time. Her sister had married James Claypoole, whose paintings he had seen on that first visit ten years before, and who had since sailed to Europe never to return."
Does anyone have more information on the Rench sisters, such as parents names, MD County of birth etc?
I used to have some of the Tombstoning in Kent County books, but donated them to the Historical Society of Delaware. If anyone can do lookups in volumes 1 thru 4 for any graves with the surname Maslin, in return I would be glad to lookups for you, from the new volume 5 of "Tombstoning in Kent County", which covers the eastern part of the county.

Thanks!

the Mary Thear / James Skaggs myth debunked

What A Find !!!

I ran across this revelation when searching for various Scaggs / Skaggs names in Maryland and the newer version with Mary Kear's name that's in the 3rd paragraph of my document below came up with either a Richard or a John search, and I just sat and stared at the name! The rest was easy.

I will send this to anyone who asks as an attachment. I have it as a Rich Text Document in WordPad which includes bold highlights and book titles properly done in italics. Just ask.

Mary THEAR / KEAR in Kent County, Maryland
Wilene Smith (ChloeQCumber@aol.com), February 14, 2007
posted online at http://genforum.genealogy.com/skaggs/messages/2751.html
James and Rachel Skaggs of Draper's Meadows and the New River area of early southwest Virginia.
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=thomasw...

The Lyman Draper Manuscript Collection archived at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin, tells us that "Henry, Charles, and Richard Skaggs and three other brothers were grandsons of an Irishman who fled from Ireland of Londonderry in 1688-'89, when so many of the hardy Scotch-Irish race emigrated to the shores of the New World. We find his adventurous descendants, natives of Maryland, living on the frontiers of New River and sharing largely in the toils and hardships of the Long Hunters in 1770-'71." [note 23, p.277: "MS. statements of Capt. John Barbee, derived from Thomas and Moses Skaggs, son of Charles Skaggs; MS. notes of conversations with Morgan Vardeman of Kentucky."] --Lyman C. Draper, The Life of Daniel Boone, Ted Franklin Belue, ed. (Mechanicsburg, PA: Stackpole Books, 1998), 268.

Many years ago, perhaps several decades ago, a book was discovered that contained the names of Mary Thear, age 60, Richard Scaggs (Scago), age 29, and John Scaggs (Scago), age 25, identified together in a lease dated April 10, 1753, in Kent Co., MD. One entry on page 9 has the code, (M), in front of Mary Thear's name and a few researchers jumped to the conclusion that this meant she was Richard and John's mother.
However, page 2 of this book lists the abbreviation codes used on its pages:
(A) date of lease -- 1753, April 10; (B) to whom leased -- Mary Thear;
(D) tenant in possession -- Annas Glenn; (C) number of acres -- 15;
(E) annual rent -- 0.2 0; (L) now held -- Richard & John Scago (Scaggs) & Lessee;
(M) ages of the persons mentioned in the lease & other remarks --
Mary Thear 60; Richard 29, John 25.

Several days ago, through Family Tree Maker's GenealogyLibrary.com online, I stumbled on another interpretation of the above Mary Thear record derived from a different source and published in Robert W. Barnes & F. Edward Wright, Colonial Families of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Vol. 1 (Westminster, MD: Family Line Publications, 1996), page 224:
KEAR, MARY, on 10 April 1753, had a lease from Benjamin Tasker of Annapolis, Agent and Receiver General for the Lord Proprietary, for part of His Lorships Manor, 15 acres. The lease was to run for the lifetimes of said Mary Kear, Richard Scaggs and John Scaggs, all of Kent County. Mary Kear, widow, assigned the land to John Knock. {KELR JS#28:301} [KELR refers to Kent County Land Records.]

Kear? and not Thear? Picture in your mind for a moment how Kear in the old handwriting might be misconstrued as Thear.

Also available through Family Tree Maker's GenealogyLibrary.com are the actual pages containing Mary Thear's name published in "State of His Lordship's Manors," 1766, 1767, 1768. Rent Rolls--Partial Census. I was unable to access the actual title page if there is one. Family Tree Maker includes it in Maryland Settlers & Soldiers, 1700s-1800s / Maryland Records, Volume II.

The following records* were then easily located at Family Tree Maker's GenealogyLibrary.com online:

From Maryland Marriages, 1634-1777, page 101:
Kear, Benjamin, 4 Sept. 1747, Mary Grownoho : 2 KE-286
This record can be found at the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore, MD.

Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records, Book 2, 1726-1750 (copyright 1993)
Shrewsbury South Sassafras Parish (Kent County), copied 1898 by Miss L. H. Harrison.
From Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records, Book 2, 1726-1750 , Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, page 16:
Benjamin Kear and Mary Grownohow m Sep 4 1747
Sarah Kear dau of Benjamin and Mary Kear b Oct 8 1748
Cathrine Kear dau of Benjamin and Mary Kear b Aug 27 1750

From Robert W. He and Mary Grownohow were married 4 Sep 1747. {KESH}
On 23 March 1722/3 Benjamin Kear conveyed to his brother James Kear a parcel of land, one-half part of the tract called Ash Point and one-half of the tract called Keer's Addition and after his death to revert to the said Benjamin Kear. {KELR JS#W:292}
At March Court, 1728, Benjamin Kear of Shrewsbury Parish, planter, was found guilty of assaulting Jane Tannen in Dec 1728 and fined 500 lbs. of tobacco. {KECR JS#22:62} At August Court, 1731, Benjamin Keare of St. Paul's Parish, was found guilty of assaulting John Howell on 19 July 1731. He was fined 250 lbs. of tobacco. {KECR JS#WK:231}
On 19 Aug 1743, Benjamin Kear of Kent County, cordwinder, conveyed land to James Masling (Maslin) of the aforesaid county, joyner. The deed stated that: whereas Thomas Kear of Kent County, deceased father of the said Benjamin owned a tract called Ash Point, 42 acres, granted in a patent to him in 1688 and Thomas Kear by his will devised the tract to said Benjamin his son. {KELR JS#24:469}
Benjamin died by 8 Feb 1750, when his estate was appraised by John Burgin and Samuel Norris, and valued at £66.6.1. William Rasin and Daniel Bryane signed as creditors. Mary Davis and Mary Denning signed as next of kin. Mary Kear, admx, filed the inventory on 30 April 1751. {MINV 47:116}
On 18 March [1754] Mary Kear was convicted for bastardy which she swore was begot by Richard Norris. She was fined 30 s. {KECR JS#25:206A} At August Court, 1754 Mary Kear, widow of Shrewsbury Parish, made oath that the child of which she was lately delivered was begotten by Richard Norris to which he confessed and paid the fine of 30 s. and entered into security to keep the child called Hannah from becoming any charge of the county. {KECR JS#25:132B}
At March Court, 1757 Richard Norris was fined 30 s. for committing fornication with Mary Kear. The child was dead. Each was fined 30 s. {KECR JS#25:215B}
Benjamin and Mary were the parents of: Sarah, born 8 Oct 1748; and Cathrine, born 27 Aug 1750. {KESH}

Archives of Maryland online : March Court 1728, Kent County
Benjamin Kear charged and fined for the assault on Jane Tannen.
http://djs.state.md.us/megafile/msa/speccol/sc2900/sc2908/00...

Benjamin Kear, Mary Grownohow, Mary Kear, and Mary Thear were not found in the many records and books available through Ancestry.com.

It has now been proven beyond any doubt whatsoever that Mary Thear never existed and therefore could not possibly be the mother of, or in any way related to, James Skaggs of Draper's Meadows and the New River area of early southwest Virginia, and the father of the famed Long Hunters, Henry, John, Moses, James, Charles, Aaron, Jacob, and Richard, and their sisters, Mrs. Susannah Whitt, Mrs. Nancy Meredith, Mrs. Lydia Harman, and Mrs. Elizabeth Hankins.

*When it was possible to find the title page / copyright page, the full citation is given. Otherwise only the bare bones citation provided by FTM's GenealogyLibrary with each page is given.

I am trying to determine if William Apsley, b. 20 Oct. 1826 in Kent or Q.A County is the son of William Apsley and Rebecca Sparks, m. 25 Jul 1825 in Q.A. On 6 Sep 1833 a William Apsley m.Rebecca Knotts in Q. A. The latter couple, as well as the William born in 1826 (possibly a son by the first marriage?) were in Franklin Co. IN in 1850.

While researching my NUETZEL Family in the church records of The German United Evangelical Church in Baltimore, Maryland, I came across the following entry in their Death Records:

Thurs., Jan, 22, 4 P.M.
Mrs. Mamie Cole, nee Meredith, and wife of John Cole, was born at Chestertown, Md. on May 22, 1869 and died at No. 608 S. Bradford St, at 3 P.M. Monday, Jan. 19, 1914.
Age 44-7-27. Buried in Trinity Church Cemetery.

I copied this as I am also researching my MEREDITH Family though I do not believe this individual is related. Possibly this church entry may be of help to another researcher.

Just in Contact with Shata California Startt family of Ben Startt. today. 1880 Census shows Startt family in California with beginnings in MD. I am chasing the Start family from Maryland.

Problem..... Start family looks like starting in Kent County Md. My Ben. shows up in Baltimore City Maryland.. First Ben shows in 1812-1890.. showing up in Baltimore City Census. Then he has son Ben 1870 Census with Ben & Mary and Ben Jr. 25 (1845) (so you can see no Ben 1833! My line from Ben H. Start & Mary Ensor Start... One of Ben & Mary E children Sarah Start married Henderson and their child Sadie Henderson married across the Cole Line. Show me your Ben 1833 and maybe I can connect. 1880 Cenus Kent County MD.. shows B.H. Start 68 and Mary A. 54 (claiming them! the ages are correct)... Problem .. somewhere Ben Jr or he had a kid at 16 wife/girl (the whole family married Mary's) married to Andrew Curtis and the Start children all show up in California ..... Noted from connection Shasta that Mary maiden name was Echols. No show in Md. but some in Va cannot connect.... but in the death records of California. Benjamin Howard Startt shows as born 1861 and died 1940 and his maiden name of mother was Echalas (cannot find)... But thought he should be dead if his wife moved on to Curtis. or why is he in California?.. as he does not show in 1880 California census. Advise if anything connects here!

On the Kent County GenWeb site is a list of soldiers who participated in the Battle Of Caulk's Field. I was looking for my ancestor Samuel Maslin on the list, but didn't see his name. I ordered 1812 military records that show my ancestor was in Usselton's unit during the time period when the battle took place. Is there anybody knowledgeable on this battle who can explain the discrepancy? Is it possible that all members of the unit didn't participate in the battle? Guess I'm also trying to find out the source of the list on the GenWeb site and how they determined who was in the battle. Thanks!

I am trying to learn who my gggmother's parents were. On my great grandfather's death cert. Her name was listed as Elizabeth Dillehunt from Eastern Shore, Kent Co., MD. I located her first marriage to William Ervine in 1818 in Kent Co. I haven't located any divorce from this first marrage. Haven't found marriage reference to William Baker my gggfather who she divorced. Then she is married in the 1850 census to Elijah Vermillion. I have heard her father might be either Abraham, Issac or Edmond De La Hunte who descended from Daniel De La Hunte.

In searching the birth, death and marriage records of Shrewsbury Parish, Sassafra Creek, Kent Co., Md., Copyrighted 1898 by iss L. H. Harrison I have come across a small but very odd question ... Who was Catherina Chesterman Cornelius? Through the fifteen pages of history this name appears three times to three unrelated family groups and all three girls are born between 1741 and 1746.

In the history I find three listings as follows:

28 Jun 1740 Catherina Chestiman Cornelius Burchinall was born to Jeremy Burchinal and his wife Ann.
(This is my family line)

12 Apr 1741 Cathrine Chestermony Cornelius Fields was born to Christopher Fields and his wife Rachel.

17 Nov 1746 Cathrine Chestermane Cornelius Evert was born to John Evert and his wife Rachel.

The history spans the years of 1721 through 1750 and lists one family group with the surname Cornelius:

Daniel Cornelius married Elizabeth (Unknown)
1. Abraham Cornelius b: 1 Apr 1742
2. Isaac Cornelius b: 13 Apr 1745
But no Catherina???

Does anyone know who Catherina Chesterman Cornelius was and what she may have done to deserve three girls being named after her???

Thanks!

old Methodist cemetery, Massey??

Is there anyone reading this forum who was involved in the transcriptions for USGS's recent book, "Tombstoning in Kent County, Vol. 5: Galena, Georgetown, Sassafras, Millington and Massey"? The reason I ask is that, in an older book I read from 1972 called "Historic graves, private burial grounds, and cemeteries of Kent County, MD: gone but not forgotten", those authors transcribed a cemetery called "old Methodist cemetery, Massey" and listed my Voshell ancestors. But in this USGS new volume 5, I don't see a cemetery listed with that name. Does anyone at USGS know if this old Methodist cemetery was transcribed by the USGS people and if so, does it go by another name now? The only cemetery I have ever found in the Massey area is on the east side of the village, but that is next to an Episcopal church, not a Methodist church.

Many thanks!

Marke Benton immigrated to Kent Island in 1652. Wife unknown. Three births recorded: Margaret b. 4 Dec. 1662;
Francis (male) b. 10 Nov. 1663 and Eastor (female) b. 19 Nov. 1666 all in St. Paul's Parish. Francis Benton died 1718; wife Mary ?, sons Thomas and Benjamin. They apparently lived on Kent Island. Benjamin may have sold his land to Thomas. Where did he go? Marke may have had other children prior to Parish records. There was a later Francis
in Kent Co. who married Hannah ? and had a son Samuel b. 11 June 1783. Related? Where did they go? Any info. appreciated.

In the 1850-1870's, my Grgrgrandfather came from Japan as a small boy and was taken in by a family in Chestertown. In the 1870 census he is going by the name Jack Williams and living and working on John Hadaway's farm. Family history says that he took the names of people who were good to him to avoid using his Japanese name.
As an adult he called himself, John Robert Thomas and named his one of his children William Plummer Thomas. Does any of this fit into a Kent county family's oral history?
