Sabrah Hopkins

I am looking for any information you may have on Sabrah Hopkins (B) 1712 in Somerset. (D)1755 -Nanticoke Hundred, Somerset, MD.

She was married to Arthur Hickman and had (I believe) 7 children by him.

I am interested in finding out her true parentage. I know many people on ancestry have her parents listed as Levin Hopkins and Elizabeth Tilley. However; Elizabeth Tilley died a full 98 years before Sabrah was born, so that is obviously incorrect information. If anyone has any other, (hopefully sourced) information on Sabrah I am interested in learning more.

Thanks so much. She is my 7th great grandmother. I realize I am lucky to have gone back this far, but I am always searching for more.

Christine
MARSH, Charles D. and Charity, died Mt. Vernon, MD and buried in yard near street about 100 yards from church. Looking for ancestors, any family information or stories. Also, MARSH, Charles W. who married (1) Carrie, died TB, (2) Leona died TB. He taught school in somewhere. Does anyone know where and when? He moved in about 1916-17 to Baltimore area, where he remained until his death. He is buried, however, in church in Mt. Vernon with other family members. My father said he (my father) was known as the deacon's boy - was Charles W. a deacon in a Mt. Vernon church?? which one?
I am looking for known slave traders who lived in Somerset county or general information on slave trade in that area as well.

The family that I believe bought and sold slaves in Princess Anne lived in North and SOuth Carolina were John and Eli Springs, they may have worked through relatives in MD by the name Gassaway or ALexander. I believe the Springs were involved in slave trading in Princess Anne around 1770s - 1830s.

I am trying to trace origin of ancestors who were enslaved by the Springs. Thank you for any help or leads you might have.

I am searching for information on Nicholas REDDISH, born around 1750 in England, came to Maryland sometime between 1750 and 1787. He lived in Somerset County, married a Nancy Ann Fitzgerald (unsure of last name). He had 10 children: Thomas, William, James, Sarah, Elizabeth, Eleanor, John, Nathan, Nicholas, and Edgar. Maryland Archives shows him farming in Somerset County, along with a Hiron REDDISH and a John REDDISH. I am trying to find where in England he came from, and if these two are related. Any information you'd like to share on any REDDISH, I have a lot of information from Nicholas to present day.
Francis A. Hickman/ Indiana Evans(evins) ...Help with Evans side?

Hi,

I need help with my gggm Indiana Evans(Evins?) born ca. 1835. Married Francis A. Hickman on Jan 11, 1859. Francis was the son of John Hickman of my previous post. I have no clue in Indiana's Line. Other info I have is as follows.

a Frank A.Hickman is listed in Accomack County Death Register as Follows :

Hickman, Frank A., on 1 Jan 1896, Massey, Pneumonia, 62 yrs, c/o John P. and Eliza, farmer,h/o India A. Widow g/info

I read from this that her real Name was India Anna Evans
But my grandmother always called her "Indiana" when she referred to her. Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated!!!!

In my earlier post I asked about the town named, "Massey". If you read the explanation of the entries in the death register, it says that Massey is a placename of some sorts. At the time of Franks death, they were living in Assawoman, VA with my GGrandfather William H. Hickman. But they buried Indiana and Frank in Pocomoke City(Salem Cemetery). Also, Frank was the son of John P. in previous post, of Worcester County. I assume Massey is in Maryland or possibly DE.

Walter Powell (d. 1696) and wife Margaret Berry

Walter Powell is listed as born 1626--what is the source for this date ? Apparrently he is the Walter transported to Vir. (Lancaster Co. ?) in 1643 by Samuel Mathews. He is listed as being in Hungar's Parish, Northampton Co., Vir. c. 1666 (source ?).
I have seen the date of mar. for Walter and Margaret listed as 24 Nov. 1667 in Northampton Co., Vir. What is the source of this date ?
One researcher stated Walter was previously mar. to an Elizabeth _____ and had 2 children by her (no names listed). Does anyone know the source of this ?

Waklter was not originally a Quaker; his wife Margaret was but Walter did not affiliate with the Quakers until after 1674. Previously 2 f his children were baptized by Mr. Tingle, a Presbytetrian minister.

Some sites list Walter as born in Brecknock, Wales
(source ?)
Others have him connected to Capt. William and Elizabeth (Wells) Powell of Jamestown, Vir. I see nothing to indicate this is true.

BERRY:

Margaret berry said to be a Quaker from Virginia.

A Wm. Berry listed in various Northampton court records from 1641-1648 but a Wm Berry died in Northampton in 1650 so this could be that Wm.. A Wm. gave his age as 28 in 1648; which Wm Berry is this ?
A William Berry listed Hungar Parish, Northampton c. 1666 (source ?)
There is also a Wm. Berryman in Northampton some have confused with Wm. Berry, but this Berryman is obviously a completely different person
A William Berry in Somerset by 1680 when he was named a trustee for a bequest to the Quaker poor from a George Johnson.

William had land "Hopewell" in Manokin, Somerset Co.; in 1683 a James Berry listed here, presumably his son. Wm. appears to have died 1680-1683. I'm sure this is Margaret's father.

Appreciate any help here.

Please I am looking to trace my ancestors. John STERLING born 1638, England came to Somerset about 1667 married Hannah --- then married Mary MARTIN MOORE. Son, Henry STERLING married Mary's daughter Grace MOORE. Lived at Ape's Hole. Some time down the road 1800's my grandfather George W. STERLING was born in Gloucester, Va but lived most of his childhood in Crisfield, Md with his grandparents Isaac (Crow)and Hester STERLING until he moved back to Gloucester to build a business, marry and rear his own family. My father Thomas J STERLING born 1897 was next to the youngest of his 17 children. My goal is to trace family of both grandmother and grandfather to the revolution. Henry was too old to join and his son Henry seems to have been too young. The DEAL name comes in with my grandmother Alice DEAL wife of George W STERLING. Her parents were John DEAL and Alice BROWN of Virginia. I have a copy of George and Alice's marriage certificate. George's parents were Noah STERLING and Elizabeth RESPESS (spelling?)This is where I am stopped. Thanks in advance for any help or leads anyone can give. Please contact me at my email address. John & Edith BIVENS were my great-grandparents. The BIVENS's family was rather large in children.

My grandparents were John & Ada JONES who resided in Chance, MD., also. John died in the late 30's and Ada died in February of 1970.
If there is anyone that can relate to either of these families please contact me.

Thanks

The Sons of the Revolution Library in Glendale, California,
is selling duplicate books. These are new or like-new paperback books, each about Somerset County, Maryland.
For the last seven years I have tried to find out who holds the records to this cemetery. It is next to Mt. Peer church but they are not the keeper of the records. Can anyone help with this request? I have tried the traditional methods with no success. My family dating back to the 1850's are buried in this cemetery. The older graves as not marked and there are no markers because of deterioration.

A number of the names mentioned on this board are common on Smith Island, a part of Somerset. They do have a compiled genealogy and people interested in connections. Suggest you contact them at the Smith Island Center, the museum on the island (smithisl@intercom.net). Evans, Bradshaw, Tyler, Marsh and other mentioned families all still live there and have for many (some as many as 14) generations.

David Weeks and Sarah Tooley Weeks living in Somerset County 1910

I am searching for any information on Ethel Tooley and her mother. I don't know much...except that her mother Sarah was apparently married to Ethel's mother in Ohio, prior to being married to my great-grandfather, David Weeks...and they all moved to Maryland in 1910. The 1900 census shows them in Wood County, Ohio, the 1910 census shows them in Somerset, Maryland and the 1920 Census shows them in Wicomico, Maryland. David Weeks apparently died between 1910 and 1920 since Sarah is shown as a widow in the 1920 census living with Ethel and Ethel has married at this point to her husband, Oscar Heath. It is apparent that David died in Maryland, but I do not know in which county. I am most interested in any information on any of these people...particularly in Sarah and David....I do not know Sarah's maiden name nor the name of Ethel's father. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,
I sure hope someone here can help me....I've been trying to find my origins for two years and haven't done it yet.
I'm trying to find out anything about URIAH BRADSHAW who is listed as taking the Oath Of Allegiance in 1778, Somerset County, Maryland. This is on pg. 23 of the Md. Early Census Index. His I.D.# is MDS1a391974.
I'm trying to link him to my Virginia BRADSHAW family. I believe there is a link because the name of Uriah is not that common and I have a Uriah, a Zachariah, and also a Harberson in my family. My Uriah lived in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., Va. and was married twice that I know of, possibly three times. I have his wives as Jane P. SORRELL (the widow WRIGHT), Ellen B. MURRAY and possibly a Keziah BRAGG. If anyone has any of these names in their data I would really love to exchange information with you.
I hope someone can help me.

Harper, Pimore, Somerset County, 1700s

I am trying to connect my Harper ancestors that were in Lincoln County, Georgia, to the Harpers that were in Somerset, Maryland, in the 1700s.

While researching the elusive Bannister Harper, Sr. and Jr., the Land Records show that Bannister Harper, Jr. of Georgia, who had the children mentioned below, John, William (my line), Robert, and Averilla, was the grandson or son of a John Harper (unproved) in Somerset.

Does anyone have any information on this property in Somerset, or records that will tie this line together?

Maryland Census, 1772-1890 Record
Name: JOHN HARPER
State: MD
County: Somerset County
Township: Pocomoke Hundred
Year: 1723
Page: NPL
Database: MD Early Census Index

Note concerning the children of Bannister Haper:
Land Records of Somerset Co. MD", on page 332, regarding the land lot known as Pimore, the following entry is found: "23-Nov-1805, John HARPER, William HARPER, Robert HARPER, Averilla HARPER, all of Lincoln Co. GA sold to Isaac Riggen ..." This could be a clue to where the Harpers of Lincoln Co. came from.
The Headrights Land Grants brought people into GA from all over the eastern seaboard, from as far north as PA and probably even further.

Any leads, suggestions, or corrections will be gratefully received.

Dorothy O'Neill in Mississippi

Isaac b 1777 and d 1843
Hannah b 1797 and d 1852
George b 1833 and d 1852

I was wondering what the relation would be between this family and the family who own Makepeace at the time. Isaac's son, Noah Lawson, owned a house on Jacksonville Rd. which perhaps was Isaac's, and family members tell me that is near Makepeace. Noah is buried in St. Peters and his brother William buried in Ashbury.
Edgar Pusey born 1870 dead end

I am looking for the parents of Edgar Pusey (1870-?) who according to the 1900 census for Princess Anne, Md was born in Maryland as were his parents , his wife Annie B.(1867- >1920) and her parents. The household contains two Taylors as "boarder" and the household next door is headed by a Mary Taylor who is old enough to be Annie Pusey's mother. Because neighbor widow Taylor owns her land but lists no acreage in farming, and because Edgar rents his land and has 120 acres in farming, I suspect that Edgar's wife Annie is a Taylor. However in 1920 I find her living next door to a Josephine Banks in Trappe district who is also old enough to be her mother.

Children of Edgar and Annie Pusey are : Vador E (married Doris/Dawrice Dryden son Aubrey) , Ressie who married Alex Powell, Ruger W , Wade, Henry, and my grandmother Alta Rae Pusey who married Sam Hastings.

I am currently researching the Handy family.
I am looking for a man (possibly James) that moved to Kershaw County,SC after the Revolutionary War.
He had at least three sons(John,Thomas, and Samuel) that settled in Wilkes County NC.

The three sons were born in the 1790s. I think my line is Samuel who married Mahala Shumate and fathered Toliver in 1834. Toliver married Susan Absher and fathered Tobias in 1879. Tobias married Maryann (Ellis or Wagoner) and fathered
Brady in 1899. Brady married Dellar Hincher Handy and fathered my dad Guy in 1933.

My main interest is the father of the three brothers -- I find no record of him. Tell me about the Handys and their heritage in Maryland. Any Native American blood?

I'm trying to trace Gloviers who were in Southern Maryland or the Eastern Shore before 1800, but after the Revolution, some of whom might have migrated into the Northern Neck of Virginia. Common names were Richard, John, and Benjamin. The name often became Glover, but I've found that a helpful clue might be that the "i" was in the name at that time. Thanks, JDG jd-glover@comcast.net.

Maj. Roxburgh was given 4 parcels for his service in the Revolutionary War. Does any one know what happened to his family? Children William, Matthew or Elizabeth. I know she lived in Salisbury at least until the date of her will in 1863 and died in 1867.

I'm visiting in Somerset, later this month (Oct 05), and I'd like to see whatever may exist relative to Henry (my g-gf whom I've just discovered). Are there any other local sites I shouldn't miss? Many thanks if you can help this out-of-stater.

He was son-in-law of Henry Prettyman White (1823-1898) of Dames Quarter.
James was born 1841, probably Nutters District, Worcester County, and likely died in VA, bet 1900 & 1910.

James H. Bussells, b. 1841, Worcester Co., was m. to Laura, dau of Henry Prettyman White. James is supposed to be listed, in a stained glass window, with other Bussells, at the Union N. E. Church, but the location of this church is unknown to me. Is it in Dames Quarter?
Also seeking info or a cemetery look-up for his father, Milton Bussells, listed in the 1850 Dames Quarter census, age 35. I believe he may have died in 1859. I'd like to see any sites associated with either James or Milton. James was listed, 1880 Dames Quarter census as "Captain of Vessel."

African/Native-American Cottman, Jackson, Dixon, Gibbons in Princess Anne

My great-grandfather, Oliver Cottman, was born 1889 in Princess Anne, MD. I am hoping to learn the identity of his father (presumably a Cottman). I am also hoping to find ancestral photos or other records. Oliver had a sister, Beulah born around 1894 but, she may have died by age 10. I've traced the following information about his mother's side of the family:

Oliver's Mother - Maggie Jackson (of Cherokee descent) born around 1872. Daughter of William Jackson (occupation listed as a carpenter in 1870) and Louisa Gibbons. Had a brother, William. Both with dark skin and grey eyes. They also had an older sister named Ella (think she died young). Maggie and her mother, Louisa, were clothes washers.

Oliver's Grandmother - Louisa Gibbons (married name Jackson) born about 1840. Daughter of Arnold Gibbons and Julia or Judy Dixon. Had at least one brother, Arnold Gibbons born about 1850 (worked in a lumber mill in 1880).

In 1910, Oliver lived on King's Creek Rd. (If I made out the handwriting correctly), with his wife Harriet Hawkes, grandmother Louisa Jackson, apparently next door to his uncle William (with wife Anne and daughter Cleo).

Any information, clues or advice would be greatly appreciated!
