I believe the hotel you are referring to in St. Mary's County is the Hotel St. Mary's in Leonardtown. Regina Combs Hammett mentions (in her book "History of St. Mary's County, Maryland 1634-1990) several events that took place in that Hotel over many years, mostly pre-1924. There is no mention of the owners. But there are several indexed listing for the Grays (Charles H., Edward, Francis, james L., John, and Nettie I.) However, I will send you by separate e-mail two scanned pictures that she included in her book. If you would like the information on the Grays that are included in her book, just let me know.
