Donna, Ann Caroline Nuthall Roach was the daughter of James Roach and Margaret Nuthall, (b.1737/40 St.Mary's,
Co.). Margaret Nuthall was a daughter of Brent Nuthall, (b.Oct 1697 St.Mary's,MD d.aft.1759 MD), and Elizabeth
King, (b.ca.1715 St.Mary's CO.- d.ca.1762 St.Mary's,CO),
dau. of Charles King and Susanna Hopewell.
Brent was a son of John Nuthall III, (ca.1670, St.Mary's Co.,MD - 1714 St.Mary's,Co.MD), and Mary Brent, (abt.1675 Stafford VA - abt 1698 St.Mary's,MD), his 1st wife, dau.of Giles and Mary (Brent) Brent, [first cousins]. John III's 2nd wife was Eleanor Sprigg Hillary, (daughter of Thomas Sprigg and Eleanor Nuthall), his first cousin. Brent had four 1/2 sisters: Eleanor, md. 1st Baruch Williams and 2nd John Pratt; Priscilla, md.Robert Lyles; Elizabeth, md.John Smith Prather; and Mary, md. Richard Duckett.
Brent's first wife was Mary Plowden, (ca.1696-1732), daughter of George Plowden and Margaret Brent,(sister of his mother). They appear to have had a son John Nuthall, (1720/25), from whom Charles Nuthall, (ca.1772 St.Mary's Co.- Nov.18,1846 St.Mary's), of St.Mary's CO. descended. [Charles Nuttall was md. twice: 1st,(Nov.2,1796 St.Mary's), to Ann McClelland, and second, (Aug.30,1817 St.Mary's), to Mary Gibbons.] He was apparently Charles Nuthall Jr. and a greatgrandson of Brent.
After his first wife's death, Brent Nuthall spent time in Somerset Co.,(ca.1732-1735). In this period it's believed he fathered my ancestor, Elijah Nuttall(b.ca.1735/6 on the Eastern Shore - d.abt.1803 Fayette,KY), in a relationship with Sarah Brereton/Brewington, dau. of William Brereton and Diana Dixon. This is the line from which the Nuttalls in Arline Dement's files derive, since Elijah Nuttall's daughter Martha married Jarrett Dement. This is not the place to go fully into the reasons for suspecting Elijah Nuttall was Brent's son, but four principle ones are: Elijah's links to the Brereton-Brewington family of Somerset CO., where Brent was living during the period of his birth; common stories handed down among the descendants of Charles Nuthall of St.Mary's CO.,MD and Elijah Nuttall's descendants in KY and IL; the fact that Brent's third wife, Elizabeth King, was apparently disinherited by her father for marrying him; and Brent's decision to go to Somerset CO., instead of St.Mary's, where he lived, and file a will in deed form, (thus avoiding probate), in which he rejected the claims of any heirs other than those by Elizabeth King to a share in his estate. [This would probably mean Elijah was illegit., so it's been difficult to find more than superficial proof.]
By his 3rd wife Brent had at least 2 daughters: Mary Brent Nuthall, (ca 1738 St.Mary's,MD), md., William B.Atkinson, [dau. Mary Brent Atkinson md. Robert Ellegood, and descend. lived in Delaware]; and Margaret, (ca.1737 St.Mary's), who married James Roach. [It appears there was a problem with this marriage, one story being that James was a Catholic and Margaret wasn't.] There's an Arminta Nuthall mentioned in the will of Elizabeth King Nuthall as a daughter, (?).
[Two versions of her will exist, one filed in the county & another in Annapolis, one calling her a daughter and the other a granddaughter!]
Ann Caroline Nuthall Roach had seven children: Berryman Brent Breeden, (1793); Enoch Cartwright Breeden, (1797), md.Lucy Payne Singleton; Mary Brent;Sarah;Matilda; Frances; and Louise. This line appears to have left St.Mary's Co., and settled in VA or KY, but I'm still trying to find out more about them.
I hope this has been of some help, although I apologize for being unable to add more about the Breedens. If I find anything I'll be sure to keep you posted. Lindsay Nuttall
