Looking for info on William Mahon Goldsborough I, born 1856,
d.1906. It is said that he and his family came to US from
England, settling in Leonardtown, Md. (St. Mary's Co.) From
there he moved on to western Md. where he was a lock tender
with the C&O Canal at Oldtown, Md. and had an office on
Mechanic St. in Cumberland, Md.
He (& his wife, Martha Ann Dodd) had a company boat on the
C&O Canal and had 7 or 8 men working under him. His job was
to maintain the tow path, keeping it clear, cutting grass and
weeds, in order that mules could tow boats unimpeded from
Cumberland, Md. to Hancock, Md. His wife, Martha Ann, took
in boarders on the canal boat on which they lived.
Due to various ways of spelling GOLDSBOROUGH, it could also
have been spelled Goldsboro, Goldsbro, Goldsburgh, Goldsburg
Goldsbury, Goldesborough, Goldesbro, Goldesbrough,Golds-
burgh,Goldisborough,Goldisborghe, Goldisburgh, Goldisbury,
Goldsborough, Gouldsburgh, Gouldsbury, Goldsberry, etc.
I am at a standstill as to the early GOLDSBOROUGH family in
St. Mary's Co. This man was the grandfather of my late
husband, William Mahon Goldsborough III.
