18th Century graves in Oxford, MD Cemetery?

Hi, I've been told by a relative that one of my French Canadian (Acadian) ancestors died in 1720 in Oxford, Maryland. I live about 80 miles from there and it would be quite a coup for me to find a relative this far away from anybody else in the family, most of whom ended up in south Louisiana.

I'm a genealogy newbie and I'm going to try to convince my wife to drive over there with me but I'm a bit nervous after looking at the site using Google satellite photos. I mean, it looks pretty small and I was wondering if anybody could tell me if graves that old are in that cemetery. Alternatively, are there other graveyards that would have been used by Oxford residents in the 18th century?

Thanks in advance,
-Robert

I am researching James Dowling a veteran of the Revolutionary War who fought in the 2nd MD Regiment (Smallwood's Brigade). The 2nd MD was composed of companies formed on the Eastern Shore.

The 1776 MD Census lists two Dowling families in Talbot Co. The district was "Mill Hundred" (recorded by Thomas Tibbels).

Where was Mill Hundred? Are there court or church records that I could locate to continue this search? Are there local individuals or organizations that I could contact?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestion. So far I have contributions from three researchers trying to discover the identities of people in photographs that they inherited. Please see if you know any of these people. There is also a link so you can email me images of ancestors that you'd like identified. This is for Talbot County only.

http://home.comcast.net/~denicola1/Who.htm

There is a data base on Ancestry.com that includes a record for Archibald Valentine which they catagorize as "Early Maryland Censuses" as follows:

County: TALBOT COUNTY
Township: ISLAND HUNDRED
Year: 1733

Can anyone tell me where this information might have come from? Was there really a 1733 MD CENSUS? (Perhaps it's a tax list they threw in with censuses?)

Also, where would "ISLAND HUNDRED" in Talbot County be?

Thanks very much.
Thomas Francis Linthicum m. Elizabeth Williams

Thomas Francis Linthicum m. Elizabeth Williams

I’m looking for documentation of the marriage of Thomas Francis Linthicum, Sr. (23 Feb 1716 - 10 Feb 1807) and Elizabeth Williams, daughter of Richard Williams and Eleanor Stockett. Thomas Francis is the brother of the Francis "Lynthicum" who married “Elianor” Williams, Elizabeth’s sister.

WRIGHT's AA Church Records:

Richard WILLIAMS & Eleanor STOCKETT, m. 14 F 1709, had
Thomas, bpt. 10 Dec. 1711, bu. 12 Dec. 1711.
Eleanor, bpt. 9 Je. 1717.
Mary, bpt. 11 Oct. 1719.
Priscilla, bpt. 8 July 1722, All Hallows.
Eliz., b. 1 May, bpt. 31 May 1724.
Joseph, b. 21 Feb. 1727. (prob. 1727/8).
Elianor WILLIAMS m. 15 Oct. 1732, Francis LYNTHICUM.

As Elizabeth was some seven years younger than Eleanor, we’d probably be looking late 1730’s into the 1740’s. One undocumented source shows 1744.

Other than the one reference above to All Hallows Parish, I have no knowledge of where this Williams family lived or worshiped. In the book “From Sotweed to Suburbia”, A History of the Crofton, Maryland Area, 1660-1960, the author, Joseph L. Browne, makes mention of a “Chapel of Ease” affiliated with the St. Anne’s Parish of Annapolis that was established in the Crofton area by 1730 and destroyed by a wind storm in 1807 which could explain the absence of a record.

Any input on this marriage or related interest would be appreciated.

Terry L.

I am in search of any information regarding Lizzie Blackiston of MD. She was 62 years old at the time of the 1910 MD census. She has listed in her household her grandson, John H. Tarlton, age 19. I believe John H. Tarlton was my grandfather. Lizzie had a daughter listed by the name of Silvy Tarlton, a son, John Blackiston, and a granddaughter, Mary V. Tarlton. Lizzie does not have a husband listed, and I cannot find a connection that indicates the parents of John H. Tarlton. I believe that this is the connection I've been searching for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am researching John McIntire who was a Jacobite prisoner who was capture in Briton and transported aboard the Friendship of Belfast to Annapolis Maryland. The Friendship arrived in Annapolis on 20 Aug 1716. John MacIntire was sold, in Annapolis, to Daniel Sherwood for an indenture of 7 years.

Whether any of the records below are of the above John McIntire (or his descendants) is unknown, but they may help in making connections.

The will of Daniel Sherwood a planter of Talbot County, Maryland was probated 21 May 1733. It is unknown if this is the same Daniel Sherwood who purchased John McIntire's indenture, but it is likely.

26 Sep 1745 a bill was introduced in the Maryland assembly from Fredrick County to grant relief to "John Mackentire a languishing Prisoner in Cecil County"

On a 1760 petiton to the Maryland Assembly, among the signers is listed John Mackentire.

4 Apr 1761, John Mackentire received a "Hard Luck" land grant of 50 acres named Hard Fortune in Washington County, Maryland.

If you have any connections please let me know. If I can be assistance to you in you searches please let me know that too.

Thanks

Dan McIntire
Having believed that he never married, I was surprised to find out that his wife (Mrs. Edwin E. Hooper) was the informant. I would like to have a copy of his obituary, hoping to learn her name among other details. If no obituary can be found, perhaps a cemetery book would have a record of them. He was buried in Oxford Cemetery. Thank you.

Fluharty.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Ginger

My dad's name was Clarence Milton Bridges, son of William T and Susan Lucretia (Jones ?). He was born May 18, 1912 and his dad William died in 1920. He had 7 brothers, Samuel, Charles, Joseph, Herman, William Virgil and 2 who died young : George and Curtis. If anyone has any information on this family ,please e-mail me. Even if all you know is the name of a cemetary where William and or the two boys who died young are buried ,it would be a big help. I think they lived in Bozman and had a farm

Rev. James A MASSEY (1808-1872) MD VA PA

I am trying to locate information about my 3rd great grandfather, the Reverend James A. Massey. I have been informed that he is listed in the MASSEY genealogies by Judge Frank A MASSEY as the son of Benjamin MASSIE/MASSEY, a descendant of Nicholas MASSEY. My James A is almost invariably identified with his middle initial A! Here is a brief bio:

* He was born Aug 3rd 1808 in Maryland and died July 9th 1872, probably in Talbot Co, MD. He is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton, Talbot Co, MD.
* He became a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1830.
* James A. MASSEY married Ann PARKER on Mar. 31, 1831 in Worcester Co., MD.
* They had a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth MASSEY, my 2nd great grandmother, born 18 Apr 1832 in Salisbury, Worcester Co, Maryland.
* Their other children were: Mary Pamela MASSEY (1835-aft 1880); Virginia Caroline MASSEY (1836-1886); Wilbur Fisk MASSEY (1830-1923) - all b. in Virginia; and Hanna MASSEY (1845-b1860) b. Philadelphia. The first three all married PHOEBUS siblings: 1856, 1859, 1861 & 1876. (Wilbur twice!)
* James A MASSEY married his daughter Sarah Elizabeth MASSEY (1811 -1878) to Joseph Spry Robson on 9 Feb 1852 in St. Michael's, Talbot Co, MD.

As a minister, James A MASSEY moved around, a lot. He lived in Philadelphia, PA about 1830; Worcester Co, Maryland in 1831-32; Dorchester Co, MD in the mid-1830s; Philadelphia about 1846; Easton, Talbot Co, MD in 1850; St. George's, Accomack Co, VA in 1860; and back to Talbot in 1870. He may have lived in Somerset Co, Maryland, too as three of his children were married in that county. Also Wilmington, Delaware at some point.

I would greatly appreciate any information you can provide.

In the Maryland Archives, volume 21 page 77, the Journal and Correspondence of the Council 1778-1779, there is an order dated Tuesday 12 May 1778 for the sheriff of Talbot county Maryland to pay George North $32 for bounty for enlisting 2 recruits.

I was wondering if anyone has seen another mention of George NORTH in Talbot county records. We are trying to find his parents names, or siblings. He was born in 1765 in MD and he was married to Elizabeth and they migrated to Trumbull County Ohio by 1805.
I'm researching POLLY HOWARD of TALBOT CO. Her daughter AMANDA married CHARLES BROWN, my gggrandfather.

According to family genealogy research:
Polly Howard was brought to Louisiana from Maryland.
Census records of 1870 in Louisiana show that she was from Maryland, and her parents were from Maryland. She came from the Eastern Shore, Landover(?)

I found, in the 1870 Census, a Polly Howard living in Easton, Talbot County, Maryland. She was a nurse, age 65, in the household of white clergyman Rev. L.C(?) Lance, wife Georganna, son Wainright, Andrew, Maria.

However, family research says daughter Amanda was born in 1848 in Norwood. She was 28 when Amanda was born.

Polly Howard was a widow living alone in the 4th Ward, East Feliciana, LA in the 1880 Census.

In the 1900 Census, Volume 13, Edition 50, Sheet 21 and Sheet 22: She was a cook and domestic worker, and a farmer. She was employed in the home of Emmit J. Boatner in Norwood, LA, as a cook.

In the 1910 Census, East Feliciana Parish, 4th Ward, Police Jury: She was age 88, mulatto, living with her Brown grandchildren.

Please check out my genealogy Web site, which has more details about the Browns: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/e/r/Karin-D-Ber...

I would like to: Pin down her location (MD or LA, when?); find her husband/father of her children; find her other children (I only know about Amanda.)

My part of the Lowry family owned a tobacco farm in Maryland till they left the US and went to China as missionaries and later became business owners. We only left China after World War 2 then we became US diplomats and we have been doing that for the last two generations. When the Japanese invaded we lost a lot of our family records and my grandmother and her sisters were the only ones to leave so we large gaps in out family history. I don't even know when they came to China only that they came from Talbot County Maryland and owned a Tobacco farm. If any of you have any information would you please tell me.

Francis Shepherd was born in Talbot County, c. 1646. He married Anna (Hannah) Norris in Talbot County c. 1680. Is there a particular source (or sources) that would list the citizens of the county during this era? There is no information concerning either Anna or Francis beyond that listed above.

A William Norris and Mary Norris arrived in the colony c. 1640. It is possible William was the father of Francis as the first son of Anna and Francis was named William. Does anyone have any information concerning William and Mary Shepherd?
Hi all,
I ran across this in the back of a book I read and thought it might be an interesting read for people interested in Talbot history.

"PLATER, JOHN EDWARD. Res. Nottingham, Baltimore Co. Son of Dr. William Plater. Att. Georgetown College 1849-55. 1860 Baltimore city dir. shows res. at southeast corner of Franklin and PArk sts. Bookkeeper. Apeears as 21t. of Chesapeake Artillery (4th Md. Btry.) Pres. 1-2/63 and 5-6/63. According to sentence of court-martial held at Ewell's Corps 9/5/63, Plater was tried and convicted of misbehavior before enemy and ordered to be dismissed. Pres. Davis later commuted the sentence to suspension of pay and rank for four months to date from 9/23/63. Plater was restored to duty 2/20/64. Dropped from the service 6/6/64. NFR. A John R. Plater, a native of Talbot Co. and 73 yearsold, is noted in an obituary in the Baltimore Sun as dying of heart disease in a boardinghouse in Baltimore 11/8/96. The paper describes Plater as a C.S. veteran (unit not specified) who married a woman from Lynchburg, Va., during the war. The couple separated and Plater returned to Talbot Co. In the summer of 1871, the wife visited Plater in Md. but returned to Va. shortly afterward. She then came back in Dec. 1871 and was shortly found dead in a field with a bottle of chloroform and an envelope of strychnine. She was initially thought to have committed suicide, but later her husband was arrested and convicted of manslaughter. Plater was sentenced to the state penitentiary for five years (2/8/73-4/2/78) but pardoned by the governor before the completion of sentence. It is not clear if Jon E. and John R. are the same."

From Maryland's Blue & Gray by Kevin Conley Ruffner pg. 320

I did some quick lookups and the two John's are not the same person.

I understand Ann Berry (unmarried?) was the mother of Daniel, Levi, Thomas and Anne Marie. Daniel, Levi and ann Marie changed their last name to Leonard (not sure about Thomas). Daniel went to Baltimore City, Levi went to Dorchester County, Thomas went to California during the Gold Rush and Anna stayed in Royal Oak. Ann Berry was the daughter of Danial Berry and Eve Leonard.

I have dates and names, but don't know how to find any actual documents.

I've been on the Archive site and even sent an email which made me more confused. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks
Trish

African/American research: HINES/GARDNER/BROOKS

I am attempting to work on an African/American family tree. I am sure it is not going to be an easy one. The family names in the subject line, HINES, BROOKS, GARDNER were and still are in that area. They just did not keep up with their family history and a lot of the older generations were already gone by the time the next generation came up.

Here is all I have so far:

Lillian Virginia Brooks
b. April 28, 1927 aprox.
d. approx. 2001
daughter of:
Berney Brooks (possibly Burnard)
est. year of birth: 1880 (as found in the 1930 Easton, Talbot, MD census)
wife: Fannie Gardner
b: May 18, 1901 (ss death index has the poss. date as 5/30/1903) (1930 census has it est. as 1901)

Possibly parents of Fannie: (family sources say Malcolm and/or Malkia) So I found the following on census;
Malkia Gardner
est. birth year: 1866 (per. 1930 easton, Talbot, MD census)
wife: Elizabeth
est. birth year: 1886
son: Edward est birth year: 1904

Lillian Virginia Brooks was possibly married to:
Charles Edward Hines
s/o
Ike and Dora Hines

Fannie Gardner also had these siblings (info from family sources):
Ethel
Edward (possibly the son on 1930 census with Malkia)

This is one evening work. The family doesn't seem to know much about their history but would like to know more. Please contact me if any of these names sound familiar or if you have any tips for researching African/American heritage.
Cher1john@aol.com
