Images of Plymouth Colony Records at FamilySearch.org

Some of the most valuable resources for researchers of early Barnstable County families are now available at FamilySearch.org - page images of the Plymouth Colony records of probates and deeds.

The original Plymouth Colony records were, in 1818, separated, repaired, and rebound as 23 volumes (plus two index volumes). Among the records of most interest to researchers are the four volumes of probate records (long referred to as "Old Colony Wills") and the six volumes of land records (long referred to as "Old Colony Deeds").

The probate records, in one set of images, are at:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-31878-2594-10?...

The land records are in three sets of images, volume 1 (1624-1651) at:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-36174-9033-56?...

Volumes 2-4 (1651-1681) at:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-36172-1664-6?c...

And volumes 5-6 (1681-1699) at:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-36174-7788-90?...

Parts of those records have been transcribed or abstracted and published, but the page images are the only complete versions of those volumes available online.

Seventeenth-century writing can be difficult to read for those of us in the twenty-first century. I would suggest that newcomers to seventeenth-century hands should arm themselves with a good guide to colonial handwriting, and practice reading the page images side-by-side with quality published transcriptions such as those by George Ernest Bowman in Mayflower Descendant, in order to gain proficiency in accurately reading those images.

I have compiled a guide to the four volumes of probate records, which serves as an index to the page images of those records and includes references to published transcriptions and abstracts of those records. Also included are references to published probate records not found in the page images. One example is the 1621 will of William Mullins, which is not found in the Colony records, but which survives in the records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, now in the National Archives in London. Transcriptions of that will have been published in at least three places, as cited in my guide, which also includes citations to transcriptions and abstracts of other probate records not found in the Colony records.

The guide (as well as my earlier index to the published volumes of Colony records) is available at:

http://plymouthcolony.net/resources/pcr.html

I am currently working on a similar guide to the Colony land records.

Dale H.
Are these are the John and Sarah Bumpas whose first child, Mary, was baptized 20-Aug-1671 in Scituate, and who moved to Rochester by the mid-1680s? If so, I have seen no evidence to demonstrate her surname. Torrey did not show even her given name, but that is established by John's will [Plymouth Co. Probate case files, Docket #3273, 1715] which names "my loving wife that now is Sarah Bumpus."

Dale H.
I did not see anything in newspaper collections but that's not unusual given the period. Not sure what specific info you are looking for. Mass VRs, 1841-1910, Vol.185:Pg.122 shows he died of "Marasmus" which, according Old Disease Names by Sylvain Cazalet, is progressive wasting of the body, like malnutrition. Record also lists Residence and place of death as simply "Saratoga."

The W.I. could be either the West Indies or the Western Islands. The Western Islands were what is today known as the Azores, owned by Portugal. Many people who imigrated to the Provincetown area were from the Azores and I believe I have seen many of those town names on the map. Check out the Azores for the names.
Sara
Sorry for the possible cross post -- I posted this to the mailing list but then realized you might not get my answer there --

Hi,

I was looking through FamilySearch.org's version of the Massacusetts vital town records, and came across these Provincetown entries. My problem is under the parent origin's I see multiple entries for these places I can't seem to figure out. The towns/provinces/cities are entitled 'Pico', 'St Michaels', 'St Mary's', 'St Georges', etc.., and the state or country is something like 'W.I.' or 'W.J.' or 'N.I.' or 'N.J.' or something else! What state/country is this????

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11082-191154-13...

EDITED:

I think these are connected to the Azores! Still don't understand the 'W.I.'. Must be ____Island I guess.

Cora Nickerson - Born 1857 . Died 1959
Wife of: Edgar Nickerson Born 1856.. Died 1927
I do not believe they had children.
Buried: Evergreen Cemetery, East Harwich, Ma

Cora live on Cora Nickerson Road (now 10 Cora Nickerson road) (Long Pond)in East Harwich until her death at 102.

Her house was demolished in the early sixties, but replicated with a large addition attached.

My grandfather,John Gavin bought a lot directly next to Cora, from Cora, in the late 1930's, early 1940's. (Now 6 Nickerson Road)which we called the "Camp".

As kids, we would run chores for Cora and visit with her.
She had no electricity, running water (manual pump), still used an outhouse, no phone. Her communication was a large bell out on her porch. If she rang the bell, one of us kids would run down the hill to see what Cora wanted.

She was still fiesty up to at least 101, a little hard of hearing, but memory was still in tact.

Cora allowed us to use her side of the beach on Long Pond which my family will always be greatful. It was a gathering place for all my aunts and uncles and countless cousins and friends. If long Pond could talk, it would have great stories of the Gavin/Cassidy/Tracey families from the 1930's to the early 1970's.

Peaceful Rest Cora & Edgar..You are remembered.

Paul Gavin
Grandson of John Gavin
Provincetown, Ma
Helpful reply.

I also saw the Barnstable Probate page -- obviously focused on current events, not historical research. I have the NEHGS people working on something else for me -- you're right, they are a tad expensive, but good.

Somehow I never thought of the Mass Archives. Doh. They've been helpful in the past - checking with them.

Most helpful of all -- I didn't know about the LDS copying service. Great idea. What's more -- when I checked their catalog earlier, I didn't find those Barnstable items. In retrospect, I must have been looking at the town rather than the county. Grrr.

Many thanks.

Dexter

I now have a specific reference to a document that ties the Nova Scotia Phinneys back to Barnstable.

There reportedly is an "Heirs Agreement" dated 17 July 1784 involving "Isaac Phinney of Granville in the ... province of Nova Scotia, the only surviving son of Thomas Phinney, late of Barnstable ..." The citation I have is Barnstable Probate, vol. 23, p. 443.

This presumably is in the probate file of Thomas, who died 10 June 1784, will dated 24 April 1780, proved 19 July 1784.

What's the easiest/quickest/cheapest/best (recognizing those are not always the same) way to get an actual copy of the Heirs Agreement? I'm in Arizona.

Dexter
You're right that, as I understand it, she's not essential. It's the Phinney side -- Isaac is the fifth generation from Mayflower passenger Thomas Rogers. So the Society project ends with his birth (unless someone else has brought it further - that inquiry is pending with them, but I'm not optimistic).

The big problem is that Isaac and Anna moved to Nova Scotia, so I'm working on that now. There's a secondary source on the Phinneys that brings them down to the couple who returned to Boston c. 1882 (I've got almost everything from there down to my wife), and which is cited in the Five Generations book, but which I assume is not alone sufficient.

A work in progress, as they say.

Dexter

I have quite a few people in my own tree who bounced around from state to state in New England back then.

My assumption when you said you were looking into Mayflower ancestry was that you were working to apply to the Society (& you've since confirmed that). I suspect you'd not have enough right now to prove that the Hannah Thomas birth record in Windham was for Isaac Phinney's wife, by the Society's standards.

Her ancestry may be irrevelant to the application, but if you do need to prove she is the same person, the one thing I can think of to suggest is to try & track down wills or probate records for the parents. They should list all living children, & would usual include a daughter's married name.

Thanks for the offer, but as you've probably seen by now, another helpful poster provided it.

I've long considered joining the NEHGS, but haven't yet. I did, however, recently hire them to do some research on another problem, identifying a guy with the most uncommon name of "John Brown." If that comes out one way, my wife gains three additional Mayflower ancestors. But I don't think that's going to happen. She'll have to settle for one, which is one more that I have. The work I'm doing on the Phinneys is to support her application to the Society.

Separately: I do have the Barbour info for Windham. Hannah, Anne and Anna all show for her in different places -- that's no difference at all, compared to a lot I see.

Dexter

> It says Anna was born in Windham, CT on 1 July 1744 to David &
> Mary (Johnson) Thomas

Note that the transcriptions of the Windham VRs published in the Barbour Collection show her as Hannah, not Anna. That is not a major problem, and the Windham records in Barbour do not show any later record for her.

Dale H.
I did a bit more digging, a found an article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register entitled "William Inglis Morse" by Arthur Adams. It says Anna was born in Windham, CT on 1 July 1744 to David & Mary (Johnson) Thomas (vol. 106, p. 243).

Same conclusion you had. Of course, still doesn't explain how Anna would've ended up in Sandwich.

> it looks like the full Sandwich vitals are not readily available on-line

The Sandwich VRs through 1885 were published by NEHGS in 1996, and are online only for NEHGS members. I own a copy but am late coming into the discussion - is there anything in the published Sandwich VRs that I can look up for you? They include intentions 1783-1866, as well as church, Friends', gravestone and newspaper records.

Dale H.
EXTREMELY helpful!!

The lack of other Thomas entries makes it even more likely I'm right -- "my" Anne/Hannah Thomas moved there from CT.

I'll do some looking around to see if the Ebenezers and Richard are related to David and Anna. Wouldn't be surprised if David is a son of Richard. But that's low priority at this point.

Thanks again.

Dexter

Helpful indeed.

My main concern is whether it's reasonable to read the intentions as indicating where she lived once (probably originally), rather than where she lived at the time of the intentions. Your response is encouraging on that point.

The strongest evidence that this is correct is the absence of conflicting evidence -- there is inconclusive support in Barnstable, Sandwich and Windham CT records for this theory, but more important, I can't find any other people who fit, making it much more likely. Unfortunately, it looks like the full Sandwich vitals are not readily available on-line -- what is available to me didn't turn up any other candidates.

Still, since we know that the available records are incomplete, the absence of conflicting evidence doesn't prove I'm right, only that I may have the most likely solution.

Thanks.

Dexter

When marriage intentions are filed in a town, that doesn't mean the couple got married in that town. It just indicates that either the bride or groom lived in that town, & was planning to get married. So, the intentions were filed in Barnstable, & the couple then married in Sandwich. Same couple. These are neighboring towns.

In both cases, the records were from the town vital records (these vital records were printed in books, if you need copies of the records, let me know).

You should only infer Anna/Anne lived in Windham at some point, you can't know for sure that she was born there (although she may have been). Also, you said this was Isaac's 2nd marriage. Do you know for sure that this wasn't her 2nd as well? Marriage records from that era didn't always indicate when the bride was married before. I would keep in mind that Thomas may not be Anne's maiden name (unless you have some other evidence of that).

Always possible Dave & Mary Thomas may have moved to Sandwich. With a quick check though, I don't see their names associated with the town.

Sorry, I probably wasn't much help.

Phinney - Thomas, Barnstable/Sandwich - Nova Scotia

I'm working to tie a Nova Scotia line to Mayflower passenger Thomas Rogers. It's shown in a secondary source, "Finney-Phinney Families in America," but I'm trying to fill gaps and document it.

Barnstable marriage intentions, 12 March 1763: "Isaac Phinney and Anna Thomas of Windham." I haven't found an actual marriage there, although I don't have the original source. (Ancestry does, but didn't show a marriage.)

Sandwich has "Isaac Phinney of Barnstable and Anne Thomas of Sandwich were married by Mr. [Abraham] Williams on April the 12th 1763." Are these the same people? Looks like they could well be.

Windham, CT has a Dave - Mary Thomas family with children 1740-1746, including Hannah in 1744. (She's ten years younger than Isaac, but would be his second wife, and that's not an issue.) Then they perhaps moved to Tolland, CT and had Lydia in 1756. Did they then move to Sandwich?

This would imply that "of Windham" in the intentions refers to birthplace, but not current residence. Does that seem right? I can imagine her being asked in Barnstable, "Where are you from?" and saying "Windham," just like I sometimes say, "I'm from Vermont" even though I haven't lived there for 35 years.

I haven't found any other plausible Isaac Phinney (there was one in nearby Harwich, but I think he can be ruled out) or Anna Thomas.

The family moved to Granville, Nova Scotia, and some sources say they were married there. I'll be checking those records before long, but it seems doubtful.

Would appreciate any comments/suggestions/corrections/citations.

Dexter Kenfield
Tucson, Arizona

If my searches are correct, Katherine Whelden was the sister of my Ruth. If Katherine was the wife of Giles Hopkins and came on the Mayflower wouldn't there be some information on Katherine's Family? I have the father(Gabriel) signing a paper saying Ruth could marry Richard Taylor in court 27 Oct. 1646.
I tried searching for Giles in the hope of a definite relationship of the parents of Katherine and Ruth.
Know Richard Taylor was Senior.
