Ok...I goofed. I think that the only guarantee would be to order the marriage record of James. It should give the name of his parents. I wrote to the Government offices on Sat. requesting what was included on a birth record pulled from the indexes. They said they would apply within 5 days.
So sometime this week I should know.

I got records a decade ago from the Cheshire offices and they were copies of the originals with name of parents and witnesses. But this was in the Catholic Church, so I wasn't sure what they do with the civil records. And I am having trouble trying to track the maiden name of my gggrandmother so that is why I am asking. Don't want to order it if it is just name of child and date of birth.

If they do include the names, I would start with those records.

The problems I have with all of this is that Stockport covers both Lancaster and Cheshire..and both are listed at various times. Now it is considered part of Cheshire. Also, the location of them in the 1871 census in Chadderton/Oldham places them in Cheshire crossing with Derbyshire...where New Mills is. The fact there are two James Wharmbys born almost at the same town in what amounts to close proximatey is where I messed up.

I will back off and let you get on with it. Sorry for the error, but my enthusiasm got the better of me!
