I can’t tell you how helpful all of you have been! In particular, MMbutts1 & Irish 719 for the info on accessing town clerk records! I have used the website so often & never noticed it was there. I am going to call Oak Hill cemetery to see if they have more info.
Before the holiday, I had contacted the Public Works Dept for the City of Gloucester (they are responsible for maintaining city owned cemeteries). They were very helpful, but could not locate a Patrick Duffy buried in any of their cemeteries within the time frame I requested. They did give me a couple of leads for additional research. Then, I have to admit with the holidays coming, everything got put on the back burner. Much to my surprise ancestry users were busy while I was on a break!
The search for my Patrick Duffy has gone like this:
On the 1920 census, one of his daughters said that she immigrated in 1871, but that she was naturalized in 1870 (?) by way of her father becoming a citizen. I also know that in 1880 two of his daughters were living in Gloucester. I requested a copy of an 1870 petition for naturalization for a Patrick Duffy from Gloucester which indicates he was born in Co. Westmeath (that fits) in 1832. If this is the same man who died in 1880, the age would be very close. I’m going to see if Oak Hill Cemetery has records of other people buried in the plot with him – hopefully I will recognize the names.
Once again, thanks for the interest. Will let you know how things turn out.
Regards
Stasia
