Marguerite/Margaret Furfey b 1888 Ma married Cleveland Eugene Gardner Feb 12, 1918. She was a nurse, he a fireman for the Railroad. I find them on the 1920 Census in Greenfield, MA - no kids. Can't find on the 1930. On the 1940 - I find him and he is listed as single. Looked for her on the 1940 - can't find. So either she died or they divorced. Her mother, Esther Furfey, dies in 1944 - but no mention of any children in obit.

Any help would be appreciated.

Margaret

Edited: He was born in Canada in 1890

Ahh-ha! that explains the use of "REV"!

Do you have any idea when he came from New York & preached? I have a book up to 1854 about the ministers in Franklin county. Perhaps he ministered in another Franklin county town?

There is no index in this book so look up difficult.

Of note, there is another source that puts him in New Hampshire.

Washington Wendell, 1863, 1 year, New Hampton Theological School, New Hampshire
Title: General catalogue of the Theological school: New Hampton, N.H. 1863.

He was born in Richfield, Otsego County, New York. He migrated to near St. Charles, Minnesota for a time, along with other Wendell family members. I need to look it up, but he was a couple of other places. He was also involved in the sale of sewing machines. I have to also look it up, but he lost two small daughters while either in Minnesota or Wisconsin, where the family went from New York.

So apparently he did some religious training in New Hampshire and that would have no doubt been the Medthodist.

There is that lengthy video, (which I listened to!) it seems they set up a college for teaching. The video goes into dates and in correlation with his census and vitals might help you get some resolution?

Perhaps he was a professor for healing? Or teaching others about the beliefs? And, maybe the town clerk knew that he could not be called a minister so added Professor?

You have valid questions. I see one tree on Ancestry where he is mislabeled REV quote/unquote!

It was in this death record that I found out about him and Christian Science. I also am aware that they had readers instead of ministers, as I have other family members that are and were Christian Scientist.

I can fully understand them probably having services in homes in the very early years, as most religious sects basically started that way.

I am getting the impression that there were not classes required to become a reader.

What I don't understand is the term professor in relationship to this.

If there was a Christian Science church in the mid to late 1800s, most likely was held in someone's parlor. The church was small during the time period you seek. The proximity of Orange, Concord, NH & Boston, MA where Mrs. Eddy spent most of her life would be fortuitous. Here are a coulple of links...

Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910)
http://christianscience.com/what-is-christian-science/about-...
while not espousing the religous belief, it may hold answers to your question, the video on the page is about 45 minutes, well done, (and as a lover of antiques cherished the settings the narratives were presented in).
--the links to "Ask a Researcher" and perhaps they can help further

Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) - Washington connection?
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=31...

Orange, Churches, Volume II of History of the Connecticut Valley in Massachusetts, by Louis H.
Okay, got it figured out! With so many "Agda V. Peterson" on the census and passenger lists it is hard to disern them!

Updated info...
Agda Victoria Peterson, a single woman, age 35 emigrated from Sweden with her niece, Greta C. Schwartz, 19; in 1918.

1910 Census Chicago, Ward 28, Cook, IL: Peterson, Agnes O 32 <1878> single b Sweden, immigrated 1905, Coat maker- factory; Agda V 21 single, b Sweden, immigrated 1908, __ist Maker-factory.
1913 Pass list she lists last place lived as Chicago.
(BTW, there is an Agnes O Schwartz buried in Brooklyn NY! http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=57... )

On the 1918 passenger list of the S.S. Bergansfojord from Kristiania on 27 July 1918 they list the nearest relative in the country whence they came as Agda's nephew, Greta's brother, Ernest Schwartz, Debelnsgatan 1 B, Stockholm.

Their destination is Brooklyn, NY. Agda gives her occupation as a Trained Nurse, while Greta is a clerk (later becomes a nurse).

They are both born Stockholm, in 1925 Greta names a child Agda V. Halvorsen. Agda V. Peterson is found on another passenger list the same year.

Agda Peterson, is on NY Passenger list, sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark, on 8 Oct 1925, and arrived NY 18 Oct 1925. Born Stockholm, she is 42, single, Occ. House-work.
If you're in Mass, you can go to Mass Vitals and see Agda's death certificate which might give you more info. If you know where she died, you could try emailing the city clerk and see if they can give you info, just tell them you do not need a certified copy. Some clerks will give info, some won't.

Margaret

Do you know for a fact that Schwartz is Greta's maiden name? Is it possible that Schwartz is her 1st marriage name and Halvorsen is her 2nd marriage and possibly Peterson is her maiden????

Maybe Agda is a cousin of George.

Margaret
Thanks for the reply... I remain am perplexed!

Why would she be in the same plot as Greta (Schwartz) Halvorsen and her husband George?

the oddest fact is that she arrived in 1925, the same year the couple above names their baby Agda!
There is also www.usgenweb.org
Click on Massachusetts - a new screen will come up. Then you would select the county you want. There might be some records there or someone that might be able to help you.

Good luck
Margaret
