Looking For Parents Of Beaman W. Snow

I've been researching Beaman W. Snow, who was born in South Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts on February 14, 1832 and died in Evansville, Rock County, Wisconsin on February 6, 1906. He married Julia Ann Preston on March 22, 1855, probably also in Rock County, although she was also born in South Hadley.

I can't find anything certain on his parents. The 1850 US Federal Census for South Hadley shows an Anson Snow who was 62 in 1850. He is listed right above Beaman (spelled Beman on the census), which would normally mean Anson was likely to be Beaman's father, but of course people aren't labeled "father, son, etc." on the 1850 census. Also in what looks like the family group, there is a Billings Snow, aged 30 in 1850 and Goodman Snow, aged 41 in 1850. Goodman Snow would also seem to be a candidate to be Beaman Snow's parent. But there doesn't seem to be anything out there online about any of them. And no indication who his mother was either. Does anyone have anything?

I am trying to learn where a family member was buried in South Hadley (that's all the obituary stated).

I found mention of an Evergreen Cemetery which is one possibility. My question: is this a town owned cemtery?

The other possibility is Notre Dame Cemetery. Is this cemetery associated with any church or would anyone know where to write for burial records?

Thanks to anyone for any information.

Looking for Death Date of Effie Louisa Kellogg Davis

I am looking for the death date of Effie Louisa Kellogg Davis, who was born February 12, 1873, the child of Simeon Kellogg and Harriet (Pease) Kellogg. I know she died sometime after March 5, 1936 because she typed a genealogy letter to one of my ancestors on that date. She was born in Granby, Massachusetts and probably died there too. She was living there in 1936. Her husband was Perley E. Davis, who was 63 years old in 1930 when the 1930 US Federal Census was taken for Granby. He was a farmer, and it looks like they lived on State Street when the census was taken. I have no information on him, and would like some. It looks like Effie married him later in life; she was still single at 36 and teaching school, according to the 1910 census.

Effie Kellogg Davis' grandmother was Portia Preston, a daughter of John Preston and Eunice Moody, at least according to a Rootsweb tree I found. I am related to the Prestons through this John Preston's father, also named John Preston.

It looks like Effie Kellogg Davis was really interested in genealogy and early history. Another of her letters I have talks about King Philip's War and their mutual ancestors who fought in it.

She also mentions the apparently recent (to September 1935) death of Charles H. Preston, who was the writer of the genealogy of the Andover Prestons. Does anyone know whether this genealogy was ever printed? Her letter states that the New England Historic Genealogical Society decided not to print it.

Alice Horner

Does anyone know whether Hadley town records exist for the 1730s, 1740s, 1750s and 1760s? I've looked at town records that have been filmed, but they never cover the right period. Are the originals in existence and, if so, where are they available for use? Judd's "History of Hadley" does not provide an answer for my problem. Also, are there church records extant for the same period? Thank you. L. At the reunion a large booklet was given out of information on all the relatives and descendants of William Henry King up until 1981. If this rings a bell with anyone please let me know! I have been trying to find my grandfather's copy but to no avail, and this is an invaluabale piece of research.

William emigrated from South Wales, UK and eventually settled in Buffalo. I am lead to believe Mary emigrated also from Wales with William but this could be incorrect and they might have met in America. I have been un able to find their marriage over here.
I am currently researching my mother's family tree as a favor for her. I have very little information to go on, and not too much experience. I am concentrating my efforts on the Kelsos of Massachsetts and Upper New York. My Great-Grandfather was named Garold Elmer Kelso Senior and he was married to Eleanor. There has been mention of an uncle who was my grandfather's half brother named Donald Gay and was a member of the Mayflower socirty and also a member of some sort of Mayflower Genealogical Society and a 32nd or 33rd Degree Freemason. This man was known to have done extensive research into the Kelso family and published his findings, but I have no idea where they would be or even how to find them. I am operating on extremely limited funds at present (aren't we all, these days?) but would welcome any advice or assistance in how to begin obtaining copies of the records and researching my family.

I am trying to prove that Reuben Smith, bapt.14 Mar 1756 in Amherst or Hadley, MA, is the son of Pelatiah (Peletiah) Smith and Rhoda Morgan (Morton). They were married 24 Apr 1755. Family back to Lt. Samuel Smith of Hadley: Lt. Samuel > Chileab > Pelatiah > Pelatiah. Pelatiah moved from Amherst to Charlemont and died in Heath, MA in 1809.

Reuben said he was born 15 July 1755 in Brookfield, Worcester, MA in his military pension papers. Married Mehitable Earle. Served in the Revolutionary War in units out of Vermont, 1774-1779. He was living in the Guilford, Windham County, VT area. During 1787-1790 was living in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY. He also lived in Whitestown, Oneida County, NY. 1801-1831 lived in Herkimer County. In 1810 and 1820 lived in Camillus, Onondaga County, NY. In 1832 Reuben and some of his children moved to St. Clair County, MI. Reuben died 2 February 1840 and is buried in the Smith Cemetery near Marine City, MI.
Children: William, Gardner, Martha, Rufus, Lucinda, John and Newell.
This family is part of the Smith DNA project and because of a mutation in one of the markers, shows a tight relationship with Lt. Samuel Smith, 1602-1681, of MA.
amos b, electa, susan in ware

I am looking for information on the only Adams family that I find appearing in the 1830-1860 census info for Ware, Mass. I am trying to connect a Susan H Adams born Dec 1841, reportedly in Ware, who then married Canfield Goodspeed in Meriden CT in 1863. I believe she might have been listed in the 1850 census as Heshalin P and in the 1860 census as Heralemia P. This is the daughter of Amos B and Electa that is reported as being born 1842/43. Our Susan had 11 children who lived to 1900, but only 2 boys. The first born 1869 was named Amos B (?after her dad?), the second was Harris Adams born 1881, named after her husband's dad.

If I have the right family, it is all girls (at least that made it to the censuses, 1830-1860). The other girls are Garifulin (sp per 50 census), Helen, Mary L, Odessa, and Eleanor--and possibly and oldest named Waitz.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated

Benjamin Glazier family lived in Hampshire County, Massachusetts 1790, 1800

Does anyone have names of children for Benjamin Glazier and his two wives - Elizabeth Pepper and Lydia Cummings besides the children I have? I have for sure Obadiah Glazier born 30 Jul 1777 in Franklin, Mass to Elizabeth & Benjamin. Reuben Foster Glazier 16 April 1789 in Montague, Hampshire, Massachusetts, Eunice Glazier 3 July 1791 in Montague, Hampshire, Massachusetts, Lydia Glazier 21 June 1793 in Montague, Hampshire, Massachusetts and Catherine Glazier 13 Jan 1796 in Montague also all born to Benjamin and Lydia. There were more children, but there are no more records to be found. Benjamin married Elizabeth in 1776 and she died in 1782, yet there is a record for only 1 child. Lydia and Benjamin were married in 1783, yet there is not a birth record until 1789. In the 1790 census Benjamin is in Montague with 3 sons and 2 daughters. In 1800 he is in Leverett with 5 daughters, 3 under 10 and 2 10-16 and 3 sons, 2 under 10 and 1 10-16, Obadiah is probably not with him. I have no proof but I think Asa Glazier is one of his children Asa was born in Massachusetts in 1785 and he named one of his sons Benjamin Cummings Glazier.

Throwing this out there until scanned – 1800s faded and worn purple velvet autograph book of Angie Buffington, activist, worked for newspaper in Three Rivers, Massachusetts; resided in Ware Center in an 1800s home (I spent my childhood summers in that home), formerly a stagecoach Inn / tavern (located across road from Mrs. Crobeck [sp?] who had milking cows, and west of “Reverend Sawyer’s place” [daughter Ruth, Republican activist, State of New Hampshire]. Believe house still standing today? Angie Buffington, “Aunt Angie”, was maternal aunt of Kenneth Buffington Titus who resided with “Aunt Angie” until her death and his second wife, Louise Charlotte Dagg Seward, in the early 1950s – 1960s. Kenneth’s first wife was __________ by whom he had a daughter (State of Indiana) (would like to know more). Since Aunt Angie’s death, along with her impressive cane her portrait from the 1800s home was hung in the nearby Ware Grange on a wall with many portraits of others.

I am re-posting this query, first posted in 2000 with no responses:

Who were the parents of Elizabeth Clark of Pelham, MA who md. Thomas Mor(r)ison on 15 Feb 1762? I have not been able to connect her to any of the Clarks I found in Pelham or Coleraine/Colrain where I have done my Clark(e) family research.

According to the History of the Morison or Morrison Family by Leonard A. Morrison, 1880; page 393; Thomas was a surveyor; surveyed the town of Salem, NY; and res. in Cambridge.

Any descendants with information to share?
While researching my Maxwell line, I have come upon a reference to the Congregational Church in Chesterfield. Sybil, wife of Thompson Maxwell and her daughter-in-law Esther Bryant Maxwell, wife of Joshua, "Was voted a letter to the Church in Pompey, NY, 21 Febuary 1799".

Does anyone know what this means?
I have in my records that my great grandmother Eliza (Effie) M. Joslin was born in Chesterfield, Hampshire Co., MA in 1856. (She was married to a George Clifford in Greenwich and had four children there also)
I am wondering if anyone knows who Eliza's parents were?
I once read a portion of a genealogy report on the Joslyn family and was wondering if that the Lyman Joslyn, Jr. the was mentioned, was perhaps Eliza's father? The genealogy report begins with a Thomas and Mary Soule Josselyn, working down only to Lyman Jr's generation (The 7th) and my Eliza was born in what would be the 8th generation. I'm just trying to make the link! Or is there a different connection? Can any one help with this query?
Thanks in advance.
~Janice Baertschy janicebaer@comcast.net

My grandmother was his illegitimate daughter. The only information I have is what is listed in her Williamsburg birth records from 1895. It states he was a carpenter, was born in New Hampshire and resided in either Williamsburg or North Hampton. I'm not clear which was the mother and which was the fathers residence. I have searched everywhere and can't get anything on him. It's almost as if he never existed. This was a BIG family secret until recently so no oral history exists. Does anyone have experience with something like this? Any suggestions?

Anna (Lyon) Howe

According to Vital Records, Jaazaniah How(e), who was named after his father, married Anna Lyon on April 14, 1760 at Grafton, MA. Some time after that, they settled in Deerfield. The area where they lived later became Conway and is now in Franklin County, however, at that time, it was in Hampshire Co. Reportedly, their four children were all born in Deerfield - Jaazaniah (ca. 1762), Abraham (1764), Hezekiah (the only known "recorded" birth - March 27, 1765), and Calvin (1768). After Calvin's birth, the family seemed to scatter. In 1775, perhaps at Cambridge Camp or Grafton, Jaazaniah (the father) joined the 21st Continental Regiment. He is listed in Capt. Luke Drury's company under the command of Col. Jonathan Ward. Later, he wound up in the Connecticut 5th Regiment. By 1780, he was declared an invalid and re-settled in Goshen, Litchfield County, CT; on July 22, 1783, he was remarried to a Mary (Frisbie) in Goshen. In August of 1780, Jaazaniah (the son) joined the 5th Hampshire Co. AT CONWAY! He served in Capt. Densmore's company who was commanded by Lt. Col David Wells. The third son, Hezekiah joined the 7th Mass Regiment (Lt. Col Brooks) AT GRAFTON! in 1781. Between the Grafton and Conway enlistments, I am having problems trying to determine where the family lived after Calvin's birth. I have not seen any record of what happened to Jaazaniah's first wife, Anna (Lyon). Any help with this confusing problem would be most appreciated.

I have some ancestors who are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. One is a child (John Steele)who was 6 years old at the time of his death. I am trying to find out where he was living when he died. I was told he was living somewhere out in the country when he was killed. I don't even know if it was MA or another state.
John's father was killed a year earlier. I only know from the tombstone that his name began with an "E" and I don't know where he is buried. John's mother, Isola, is buried in St. Mary's with her 3rd husband, Eugene McCormack. Anyway...does anyone know if there were burial permits filed in the city of Northampton that might give me some further information. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Northampton Cemetery Maps

I just discovered a helpful resource for locating graves in Northampton. It is at the city web site: http://www.northamptonma.gov/dpw/Cemeteries/

The site contains maps made in 1940 of 5 city cemeteries, 2 Catholic and 1 Jewish cemetery. Many of the plots are marked with names of owners as of 1940.

The maps were made by WPA workers to identify graves of war veterans. However, they contain many names of non-veterans. I have been looking for relatives buried in St. Mary's, and have found their staff less than helpful, so this is a big help.

Rice Smith Clark Bush

Hi,

I'm sure hoping someone can help me. For over 15 years I have searched for a ggggg-grandmother. After looking in Berkshire Co, I'm told by another family member that she was actually born in Northampton, Hampshire co. I'm looking for a Orilla or Aurilla Bush or Clark b. ca. 1803. Our suspicions are she was a d. of Henry or John & Mary Smith Clark. Her father died & her mother remarried Ziba Bush. We are told by family history that both her father & stepfather were Am. Revolution veterans. She married a William Oratio Rice, b. 1799 near London, eventually moved to Boonville, Oneida Co., NY, had 9 children, and eventually ended up, along with 8 of the kids out here in WI.

Does anyone know anything???? I'm at a dead end with this one! I can get the family back to 1300 in some areas, but can't find a woman who died in 1882 parents!

Thank you in advance!

I have them in the 1920 census with their two children Robert (1916) and Marie C (1919). They were married between 1910 and Robert's birth in 1916 as they are both still with their parents in the 1910 census. I live in Australia and would love to look up their marriage details and also birth of children details but don't know how to from over here.
Also believe they may have died prior to 1930 census as kids are at her parent's in census and I can find no trace of them at all (even with transcribing errors).
Can anyone help? They were living in Hampshire on Robert's 1917-18 Draft Rego and also in the 1920 census in the Northampton Ward 1 section....
Many thanks in advance

So I am hoping someone who reads this goes to where ever the Deeds of 1816-1818 can be found. I need a copy of a deed that was mentioned in a letter of 1979 from someone who has since passed away and if she got a copy of this deed, I have no way of knowing it.

It is:
"John Meklem in 1816-1818 deeded land to the inhabitants of Pelham; recorded in Liber 41, page 272. "

I have just begun a new search on this family now that I finally found out how to spell the surname which is not the ways we have found it in the MA. VRs; am hoping this deed might give me more clues to the family of (Maclean).

Thank you so much for your time and help. I have no libraries for research, so even if this has been filmed, (which i am sure it has been), it does me no good at all.

If someone has access to "History of Pelham, Mass. 1738-1898" by Parmenter, I would appreciate a quick look at an index, if there is one, for the surname which is spelled too many screwy ways:
Maclein, Maclean, MacLean, Macklem, Ma-- (oh whatever, any which way you can misspell that name).

This family came over with the Clarkes ca 1718 and both families ended up in Pelham and intermarried many times. I just recently found the proper way to spell this surname, so my search begins anew. I cannot find the book "History of Pelham" on internet and I do not have access to libraries these days where I currently live. I would like to get more information on this Maclean family because I have been stuck on Andrew and Isabella for years now, with no clue where they came from or when , or the family history of Andrew. Hopefully there will be more tid-bits to work with in this book I asked abut..

Thank you for any help you can give. (Not interested in buying a book so we can skip that part ).

I am looking for info on my gggrandparents. They are WILLIAM JONES and ANNA LOUISE WOODRUFF.
I think they were in Tennessee first and then came up to Massachusetts. My ggrandmother, ANNA LOUISA JONES, was born in Jackson, TN. Unfortunately, they did not keep birth records when she was born.

I am trying to figure out date of William and Anna's marriage and location, and if there were other children also. According to the census of 1900, there daughter indicated that her parents were born in Tennesse.

Anna Louisa Jones ended up in MA with her parents and married WALTER A.COOPER in 1898. (Anna and her parents were living in Northampton at 109 Elm Street.)
Anna and Walter ended up having 5 children, (one died I assume at birth). My grandmother was Myrtle Eliza Cooper born in Massachusetts in 1911.

If anyone thinks they have a connection or so.. please dont hesitate to contact me.

Lfelixthekat
SURNAMES WEST PART CEMETERY SOUTHAMPTON MA

I took a trip back to West Part Cemetery in Southampton, MA.
They have started to take care of this once terribly neglected cemetery. They have done a lot ( a great improvement! )

FYI...surnames that I could read ( some stones are worn smooth ) Some given names and dates were difficult to read also.

Searl(e)....several
Clark..... several
Pomeroy.....several
Harris....Ebenezer
Cooley
Southworth
Burt.....several
Brockway.....Semilus(?)
Parsons
Clapp
Dimock
Hatch
Avery

The earlist death date I saw was 1797. It was the son of Martin & Dorcas(?) Burt. His name was Luther. He passed Feb. 10, 1797 age 11.
His brother, King passed April 16, 1803 age 8.
The dates were not noted in this format on the stone. It took me awhile to figure out the #'s meaning.

I am puzzled because I found another marker listing a Luther Burt. This one says: LUTHER son of Mr. Martin and Mrs. Philomela(?) Burt. 25 Oct. 1809.
Same father ( Martin ) ?

Looking for information about this family.

I am unsure who Clement's first wife was, but from the first marriage (in the mid 1860's time frame) they had at least 2 sons named Joseph and Alfred, born in 1865 & 1867 in Canada.

Eliza MORIN would be Clement's second wife.
From this marriage (about 1884 time frame) there were 7 children; Rose, Rosealba, Iselda, George, Ulric, William and Xavier - all born in Massachusetts between 1885 & 1907.

Clement COTE was born (at my estimate, around 1840) in Canada and definitely died before 1910. In the 1910 Census of Holyoke, MA, Eliza is a widower and has a 2yr old son named Xavier. So I assume Clement COTE died between 1907-1910 in or around Hampden or Hampshire County, MA.

Clement and Eliza's son William COTE married Alma FORTIER in 1916, and they had 10 children; Gerald, Raymond (MoMo), Roger, Gertrude, Elroy, Normal, Earl, Eleanor, Muriel, & Harold between 1917-1929, all born in MA.

Raymond COTE married a lady named Amadine and had 6 children; Paul, Frank, Elaine, Nancy, Susan and another girl (we can't remember her name)!

Any information would be very helpful; thank you!
Joni

Samuel Kilborn (Kilbourn) of Middlefield

I have been working on my brickwall of Nancy Kilborn (Kilbourne) for years. I have her marriage record to
Martin Eggleston, Marr int Sept 27 1802, Middlefield. Martin was the son of Benjamin Eggleston and Mary Gordon. The problem is that I have been unable to determine who her parents/siblings were.

Working under the theory that perhaps Nancy's father and Benjamin Eggleston perhaps had business dealings of some type together in/around Middlefield, I found several land records in Hampshire that mention Samuel Kilborn. The records were located in the Grantee/Grantor Index, however I've been unable to determine the correct film numbers that have the actual land deeds. Samuel was also the plaintiff in several court cases in the Court of Common Pleas.

In addition to this Samuel Kilborn, I have found references (also in the Grantee/Grantor index) to other Kilborns - ie Benjamin Kilborn, Jonathon Kilborn, Calvinia Kilborn, Freeman Kilborn, George Kilborn, Martha Kilborn, Hezekiah Kilborn.

Can anyone please tell me if they might be familiar with this Samuuel Kilborn? Is he mentioned in the Payne/Kenyon Kilborn book anywhere? In the 1800 Hampshire census, there is a Samuel in Buckland and another Samuel Kilbourn in Wilbraham. Has anyone come across any dealings with Kilborn/Eggleston together?

In Middlefield, the ONLY mention of the Kilborn surname in the vital records is the marriage record of Nancy Kilborn and Martin Eggleston.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks,

Colleen Lill
Alberta, Canada

VRs for Hadley, MA: need look-up

I have not been able to find any VRs for Hadley on the internet; does anyone have access to the VRs to help me out? [I know - LDS possibly has them on film or in a book but I do not live near any FHL or a public library to try interlibrary loan]. If someone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. I am searching for any births/marriages for Clark, probably a John Clark and to see if there are any McClem/McLain/McLein/Meklem and however else they choose to spell it, listed in any B,M,D for Hadley. Thank you ahead of time.

Isaac B. Spring

Looking for information on the family of Isaac B. Spring. So far I have a wife named Parcis retrived from www.familysearch.com. A daughter named Phylathela born abt. 1791 who married a David Merritt. Their first child, Marshall Spring Merritt, was born in Canada in 1811. Another daughter named Keziah was born in 1786 and married a Benjamin Merritt, possibly a brother to David, in 1812 in Greenwich, Hampshire Co., MA and a son Isaac B. Spring, Jr. born in 1795 married a Rhoda. I found where these children had moved to OH and that Isaac Sr. had remained there in Greenwich, but can't find any information on this family or the Merritt family there in Greenwich, Hampshire Co., MA. If Isaac Sr. and his wife are buried there, he would have been moved or buried under Quabbin Reservoir.

Has anyone ever heard of a photgrapher named George E. Cole? The address was 143 Main Street in Northampton. I'm wondering when this photographer( could be Coletco but looks more like Cole & Co)was actually in business.

We have a copy of an old photo of my wife's great grandaunt, Elizabeth Eagan/Egan and I'm trying to get a sense of when the photo may have been taken....

Ed O'Connor
Hudson,MA

Is This Photo The Old Cemetery In Hadley, Massachusetts?

From that same trip my mother took to Hadley, Massachusetts in 1978 is this photo of a graveyard. As you can see by the name I gave the photo, I thought it might have been the Gunn Cemetery, but I've since been told my two Gunn tombstones (two different Moses Gunns) were in the Old South Cemetery, between Montague and Sunderland, and there is no "Gunn Cemetery." Someone else has suggested this graveyard picture might be the Old Cemetery in Hadley. Please let me know which cemetery this is.
