Michael A. Mezzocchi, Ph.D., 59, of Hollis, N.H., died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Portland, Maine.
Mr. Mezzocchi was born May 31, 1945, in Boston, son of Alfred F. Mezzocchi of Massachusetts and the late Anna (Marinelli) Mezzocchi.
He was the husband of Rosemary T. (Quinn) Mezzocchi, to whom he was married for 34 years.
Mr. Mezzocchi was a self-employed educational consultant in public and private schools in New England on individual and systemic behavior issues. He was a veteran educator for 39 years, serving in many educational capacities throughout his career, including superintendent of schools in Winchendon, Mass., director of special services for SAU 14 in Epping, principal of Waconah Regional High School in Dalton, Mass., director of education and residential services for Easter Seals in Manchester, principal of Mascenic Regional High School in New Ipswich, director of adjustment programming for Timberlane School District in Plaistow, assistant principal at Groton Dunstable Junior-Senior High School in Groton, Mass., and Lebanon High School in Lebanon, teacher at Chester School in Chester, Columbus High School in Boston, and at Nazareth (a residential treatment facility) in Jamaica Plain, Mass. He was teaching behavioral disorders and behavior management at Rivier College in Nashua, and also taught these courses at Notre Dame College in Manchester.
In 1992-93, he was part of a collaborative superintendency in Massachusetts that received state, regional and national attention. He served as past president of the New Hampshire Private Special Education Association and was instrumental in the design and implementation of paraprofessional training programs. He was also instrumental in the design and implementation of a graduate level intern program through Plymouth State University.
Mr. Mezzocchi was the author of the audiotape set “Managing Difficult Classroom Behavior,” as well as the author of several articles regarding issues of behavior and behavior supports. His passion for the spirit of children can be seen in his educational philosophy that “Education should not and cannot be made available only for the select few who are academically inclined, physically fit and innately socially accepted.” He was a baseball and football coach at the high school and college level for more than 20 years.
In his earlier years, he was a member of the Army National Guard in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Mr. Mezzocchi received his doctorate in education from Kennedy Western University in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and his masters in education, school administration from Rivier College in Nashua.
He was predeceased by a grandchild, Mariya Rose McDonald, and a sister, Marianne Power.
Besides his wife and his father, survivors include four children, Jeffrey Michael Mezzocchi of San Francisco, Suzanne Michelle McDonald and her husband, Toby, of Kearney, Neb., Nicole Noel Olsen and her husband, Brett, of Pepperell, Mass., and Jared Martin Mezzocchi, a college student at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn.; a sister, Geraldine Dobrasz and her husband, John, of Charlottesville, Va.; a brother-in-law, William Power of Hudson, Mass.; a grandchild with another grandchild due any day; and many nephews and nieces.
Visiting hours at the Marchand Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Pepperell, Mass., are today, Friday, Dec. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Church, Tarbell St., Pepperell, Mass. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Pepperell.
