I don't have any idea offhand of how to find out where John Prezip came from in Portugal, nor how he got to america. Maybe as a hand on a fishing boat. And just because he was "Portuguese" doesn't mean he was born there, just that that was his ancestry. He could have been born in the US or the Caribbean or even the Azores or other islands where Portuguese settled. New Bedford, MA, had a large Portuguese population, and was a fishing/whaling port of great renown.
I'm not related to the Prezips. I know the name because my Goshen ancestor eventually owned the land where Prezip lived. The cellar hole is about a quarter mile south of where our farmhouse is. The pasture where I helped my uncles gather hay is still called the Prezip/Perzip lot. I'll keep an eye out the next time I am at the deed registry.
I wonder if the census recs from 1860 onward for any of his children would give any info. One column is for the father's birthplace. I don't have any family record of his offspring, so I wouldn't know who to look for. If you do, let me know and I'll search on Ancestry, unless you can do it.
The name spelling of Pursip comes from the online index of Massachusetts vital records:
Last name, First name, Location Year Vol, Page, Type
Pursip, Sarah L., Hinsdale, 1843-44, 8, 20, Death
It may be a typo or mistranscription, since the Hinsdale Vital Records give the following:
PERSIP, Sarah L., ––– ––, 1843. [death]

Jon

Thank you so much for these details. I actually spoke with Irene Brown (The Hanging of Ephraim Wheeler) several years ago, probably around 2004. Their book along with exchanges with a Ceasar relative, provided the most detail until your email. Like you I have not been able to find out where John Persip originated from. I am also greatful for the suggested spelling Pursip. Along with the Percip, Persipp, ect. spellings, this is the first time I have seen Pursip.

I just found the DETAILS of the Persip-Hoose connection with the designation in 2010 of the Fitch-Hoose home in Dalton, Mass. on the National Register. Is this of interest to you? How are you Persip connected? My mom was a Persip. Are you related to Elliott Persip?

Persip/Presip/Prezip/and many variations

John Presip lived in Goshen, MA, before he moved to Cummington. The History of Goshen, 1881, by Hiram Barrus, gives the following:

p.223 (marriage intention):
"John Presip* and Molly Odell of Cummington, March 4, 1793."
footnote:
" * Presip was a Portuguese."

He lived next to an old, now-abandoned road in northwest Goshen, and the cellar hole still exists. I haven't discovered yet exactly when he lived there, nor who built the house, and who might have lived there before or after he did, nor what happened to the house. The pasture is still called "the Perzip lot".
He doesn't appear in the 1790 Goshen census, and may not have been in town then, since his name also does not appear in the 1790-91 warrant for "warning out of town", which consisted of a large number of residents. However, there were 8 people of color in Goshen in the 1790 census, a group of 5 in the household of freed slave Philip Allen, and 3 others, one in each of three families. And John did not marry Molly Odell until 1793, so he probably wouldn't have lived alone.

However, he is in the 1800 census for Goshen:
"John Prisept" - no "white" residents, but "7" in the column for "all other free persons...".
Unfortunately, the 1800 census was sorted by the first letter of the surname before it was submitted, so there is no way to tell from it who his neighbors were, and therefore what part of Goshen he lived in. But the family tradition passed down to me is, that he lived where that cellar hole is. I looked in the Hampshire County deed index for his name, but didn't notice any entries. However, there are potentially many possible ways to spell the name phonetically (including Pursip). And it is always possible that he never actually owned the Goshen land.

"John Persip" does appear in the 1810 Cummington census, with 13 non-whites in his household. [The Odel name doesn't appear, so this might be two or more families living together.]

In Hinsdale VR, p.89:
Persip, John, "molatto", Aug. 27, 1844, a.80. C.R. [church rec.]
If age is correct, he was born 1763-1764.
His death does not show up in the Massachusetts Vital Records state-wide online index, 1841-1910.

There were several people of color in Goshen.
Hist of Goshen. p.217:
"Moses Shepard and Fanny Allen, (colored) Nov. 6, 1796."

Ashfield VR [town adjoining Goshen on the north], p.201
"Shepard, Moses of A. and Fanny Allen of Goshen, blacks, int. Oct. 2, 1796."

Fanny Allen was probably a dau. or sis. of Philip Allen, the freed slave of Goshen, previously owned by James Packard (who had inherited 9 slaves before Massachusetts ended slavery in 1783).
There is a Moses Shephard and family, "colored", in Florida, Berks. Co., MA, in the 1820 census (stamped page #45).
A Moses Shepard family (colored) was in Lanesborough census 1840, in a sequential enclave of 9 "colored" families, including a "John Presip", the name of the Goshen resident.

There may have been a connection between the Odell family in Sutton and the Goshen/Cummington area, before the family moved there:
Sutton VR p.322 [spelling is verbatim]:
"Odle [Odel in int.], Elisabeth and Asa Dunber of Cumington, June 9, 1784."

There is a book, by Irene Quenzler Brown, Richard D. Brown, published 2003, titled "The Hanging of Ephraim Wheeler." He seems to have married Hannah Odell, sister of Molly. The book mentions John Percip/Persip in at least two places. [I found a preview of it in Google Books, with some of it available for reading.]
Just wondering.... my father in law James Brock Pereira had relatives( I believe cousins) that we visited in 1972 on Martha's Vineyard. My father in law's father was Antonio Pereira Damaz from St Miguels Azores Portugal and I believe his mother's anme was Marie Estrella from Azores also. He(father in law) had a brother Tony who died when he was about 21, they lived in Fall River at the time. Jimmy Brock lived in Westport MA and Tiverton RI.Any possibility that you heard of him? He was a musician and had his own orchestra, he played a lot at the ballroom at Lincoln Park in Dartmouth MA.

Very interested in finding out about 'Pereira' from St Miguels Azores Portugal who settled in Fall River. Some used Damaz or Damos or Damazo(spelled many different ways) as a middle or last name. Especially interested in Antonio Pereira Damos(Damazo on his tombstone in Notre Dame Cemetery) born in 1895 and dies in 1955. He played soccer for the Colonial Team sponsored by Colonial Beverage of Fall River, his soocer name was Brock Perry. His family lived around Pine St, Plain St and Tremont St area. He had 2 sons Antone who died arounf 21 yes of age and James Pereira born in 1918 and died in 1981 who lived in Westport + Tiverton most of his adult life he was a musician whho went by the name Jimmie Brock,he used to paly at the Hi-Way Casino in Westport he had his own orchestra and playedd a lot at Lincoln Park and at the Pocasset Country Club in RI, he also played a lot with Al Rainone's band. Jimmie Brock is my children's grandfather. Would like any + all information about this family. They are difficult to research. Thank You

Hi Sauni. I am following your trailblazing. I am Gene's daughter Candi. We met at Kay's house when she passed I think. I have gotten the bug and enjoy seeing your tree pop up as I am searching. I know I'm on the right track. My husband and I recently visited St. Patricks Cemetary in Arroyo Grande. The headstones are loose and there has been much vandalism. Do you know who purchased the recent headstone with both names (John P and Maria Luisa) on it? We were wondering if it is a good idea to take it to the historical society for safe keeping until resoration on the cemetary is done. Curious as to what you think.
My email is candimac@comcast.net
I have some old photgraphs and am curious about 2 rumors:
1 that my dad told me. Manuel P. went to university at Lisbon to study languages, and that he knew 7 different languages.
2 That there was a store in Hanford or Lemoore. I think the picture I have says Lemoore. Any info on this?
Any hints or info would be welcome-Thanks

My grandfather, Manuel T. Sousa came to Marlborough, MA from the village of Vila Du Porto in Santa Maria, Azores in 1911. He met and married my grandmother, Emilia Silva in Marlborough, MA. She was from the village of Santo Espirito, Santa Maria, Azores. Amazing that they didn't know one another on Santa Maria.

This is very exciting. I also saw the posting that I believe was from a genealogist. I was concerned about the legitimacy and did not respond but was very interested in the Turks , etc., info as I had no knowledge of this.

My email address is cartersaunders.ltd@gmail.com

I will be going thru what I have this week-end. I am volunteering to do phone banking for our president this week but the week-end if for family work! The first lady will be in Pittsfield the beginning of August. Henry Thomas lll, a Persip relative, has just been appointed to the head of the Univ. of Mass. board of trustees. I can just hear Nana silently not being surprised. Mommie talked a lot about how Nana would have been with Dr. King. Apparently my grandmother was quite the activist. I need to get those stories down on paper!
Thank you for your speedy reply. My condolences on the passing of cousin Maria. I have recently returned from a cruise and was unaware of her passing until your mention of it. Many years ago she came to Bermuda to meet family. However, unfortuneatey, I was off island at the time and missed the oportunity. When natalie came ot performat our Music Fest. I made attempts to correspond with her through our tourism Minister of the day to her people , but never got a reply. Then more recently, a genelogist saw my message of years ago about Saunders - Bermuda/ Turks Isl. and contacted me to put together a family tree for Natalie.

The two of us shared researched information . I have Bermuda information that I can share with you through your email. So when you are ready , feel free to send it to me.

I will defineatly appreciate any and all photos of family members. I do have copies of ship manifestos for Mary, Zacheus, Edmund &Caro ( in Bda records ist spelled Cara) and my Great Grandfather, Duncan. it appears that parents Zacheus Sr. and mary his wife also moved abroad. Only Duncan remained in Bermuda. There were other daughters born however had a very short life span.
Finally, cogratulation on your further pursuit academic achievements.
Until,
Betty Ann
Hi there,

Sorry to be so late in contacting you. Where is the summer going? Of course Maria's passing is a loss to us all and a reminder to me that she was interested in family history.

I am going to search through some photos I do have and hopefully find pictures, especially the one I recall of Uncle Ed and (my) Nana (Mary Elizabeth Saunders Persip). I will copy anything I find and get them to you. I am not sure what luck I will have with anything I do not have in my possession.

I ended up with a project that I thought would last 4-5 days going much longer! I go back to school (my masters work) on August 1st and so this is my time to do family history stuff.

Do you have any of the Ellis Island information on Uncles Alpheus, Duncan or Ed and my grandmother? I do have that. It is from the ship manifest.

I will look for pictures as I know they do tell a story. I also have what a spoke about at Mommie's funeral and so there is that story of her life. She did start out in Bermuda!

Hi Mrs. Adelaide Persip Solomon,

My sister recently told of the back posting of your Mother's obituary on the internet. It made me quite excited! I am the great grand daughter of Duncan Saunders of Bermuda who was brother to your grand mother, Mary, uncle Edmund, Cara and Alpheus Saunders. I have been searchig for years, for information on our relatives who moved off island many many years ago! My grand mother was Edith May Saunders and she had sisters named Joan and Alsie. Edith May married Norman "Mussy" Cann and had three children - Edward, Lovette ( my mother) and Rudolph. I hope you can share photos of our ancesters, namely the relatives who left Bermuda and made thier homes in Pittsfield , Conneticutt and New York. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Betty Ann Cann- Townsell

I am looking for connections to my great-grandfather Joseph Medeiros Cabral who immigrated from Urzfino, Sao Jorge, Azores
b.20 Jul 1885, d. 1960-1 In Fall River, MA. Owned a dairy farm on Adamsville Rd, Westport, MA 1930's - 1960.

He was married to Agnes Mary Perry born in U.S. parents Frank A Perry Sr. (from Sao Miguel) and 'Mary' who also resided in Westport. I have located them on census records. They had a son and daughter Joseph Jr and Mary Agnes Cabral b. 19 Oct 1916, d. 18 Dec 2009.

Joseph Jr married Viola Miguel and had 2 daughters, Vivian and Margarite. Mary Agnes married Alfred Perry Sylvia (Sao Miguel)(Silva) and had my mother, Agnes Perry Sylvia, nicknamed 'Betty'. Would love to find people connected.

I know that the correct spelling and pronunciations for Perry is Perreira, and that Alfred Perry Sylvia corrected the spelling of his last name to Silva when he discovered his father's real birth name in the Azores was Amaral Perreira da Silva from Sao Miguel. The headstone in Dartmouth, MA says Manuel Perry Sylvia.

Persip, Odel, Lloyd & Askins Family

Hi---
I am researching the Persip/Persipp/Percip (and Odle/Odel/Odell, Lloyd/Loyd, Askins/Askin/Haskins) family.
In particular, I am researching Sarah Ann (Lloyd) Askin, the granddaughter of John Persip and Molly Odle, and the daughter of Lucy Persip and John Lloyd, for the David Ruggles Center for Underground Railroad Studies women's history trail. Sarah was born in Lanesboro, MA and became an active member of the Free Congregational Society in Florence, MA, a religious community that was started by former members of a communitarian/utopian community that disbanded in the 1840s.
There were a number of more famous African-Americans living in Florence at the time who also were members of the community, including David Ruggles, a self-emancipated slave who started a water cure treatment here and was an active member of the Underground Railroad in New York, where he lived before he came to Florence for health reasons. Frederick Douglass was one of the people Ruggles helped to escape. Sojourner Truth also was involved in the communitarian and abolitionist movement in Florence and owned a home in Florence.
Sarah Askin/Askins lived in Florence from 1849 until her death in the early 1900s and became a respected member of the community and of the Free Congregational Society. We are trying to determine whether she may have harbored fugitive slaves in her home.
I am especially interested in any stories you may have about the Persips or the Askin, Lloyd or Odel families I'm researching in Western Mass. I would like to know more about Sarah's heritage. I am trying to determine whether some of her forebears were fugitive slaves, free, Portuguese, Native American or perhaps from the West Indies.
Sarah and her family are identified in records variously as black, mulatto, colored, and negro.
Thank you so much!

Re: Maria Vicente & Manuel Certo

Hello,
Did you ever get a reply to this query? If not, I believe I found some information on this couple and their family. (I am not related to them.)
In every reference, the father is referred to as José or Joseph, although he could have had a middle name of Manuel.
Anyway, on the 1920 census in New Bedford, MA, I found them living at 74 Acushnet Ave. Their surname was misspelled Serta.
Listed are: Joseph Serta (Certo), age 41, immigrated in 1917, born in Portugal. His wife Mary N., age 34, immigrated 1917, born in Portugal; son Manuel Serta (Certo) age 9, born in Portugal, immigrated 1917; and daughter Isabel, age 15 months, born in Massachusetts. Also living with them is Joseph Certo's brother-in-law, Lucio Vincent.(Lucio is listed as Luiz Vincent in the 1930 New Bedford City Directory).
By 1930, Joseph, Maria and family had moved to Newark, New Jersey. They are living on Van Buren Street.
I found the immigration record for this family.
Jose Certo, age 39, his wife Maria Nascimento, age 32, and their son Manuel, age 7, arrived at the Port of Providence, RI, on Dec 4, 1917, aboard the SS Roma. Last residence was Lisbon, Portugal. Their final destination is listed as New Bedford, MA. Their U.S. contact person is listed as José Certo's sister-in-law Maria Theresa Anjos, on Acushnet Street, New Bedford.
José Certo is listed as born in Marco de Caneveses, Portugal. His wife Maria Nascimento and son Manuel are listed as born in the city of Porto (or Oporto), in Leiria
district of Portugal.
I found several articles related to this family in a New Bedford, MA, Portuguese-language Newspaper called Diario de Noticias. I don't read Portuguese, but with the help of an on-line translator, the articles read, roughly, as follows:
November 22, 1923: "A large number of friends and relatives of the parents of Miss Isabel, daughter of José Certo and his wife Maria Certo, celebrated her birthday with a festive reception and many gifts".
December 24, 1923: "Tomorrow is the birthday of Mrs. Maria Certo, Resident of No 95 Acushnet Ave. Our best wishes."
Dec 24, 1924: "Tomorrow, Mrs. Maria Certo, wife of José Certo, will celebrate her birthday. They are residents of 95 Acushnet Ave."
March 20, 1928. "Mrs. Maria Certo of Rivet Street, New Bedford, is mourning the death of her father in Portugal. Our thoughts are with the bereaved family."
October 2, 1930. "News from Newark: Our friend Manuel Certo underwent two operations on his right hand because of an injury. He is staying with relatives at Rivet Street, New Bedford, MA."
July 7, 1932, from Newark, New Jersey. "Isabel Certo, daughter of our subscriber José Certo and his wife Maria N. Certo, received her diploma from Wilson Avenue School. Isabel, who came from New Bedford, where she still has relatives, also received a certificate for good penmanship."

It looks like Lucio Vincent (Maria's brother) stayed in New Bedford. On the 1930 New Bedford census, Lucio is married to Gertrude___, age 29, born in Portugal, and they have a daughter "Fernanda" age 4, born in Massachusetts.

If you would like copies of the above-listed documents, please send me a message via Ancestry (click "treefind4fun" above, and then click "Contact"), and I'll be happy to send them to the email address you specify.

Margaret
