My father-in-law was always told by his family on his mother's side that they had Indian in them. It was said a half Indian male married a full blood indian female and she got kicked off the reservation or outted from the tribe for this. His mother was Francis Sofia Matthews. She is the daughter of Charles Abner Matthews (b. 1880 maybe in Rochester, Monroe, NY) and Phoebe Mates (b. 1890 in Riverdale, Montcalm, MI). Both resided in Gratiot County, Michigan. I couldn't find anything on Charles Abner Matthews background. Phoebe Mates divorce him later. Phoebe's parents were John H. Mates from Medina, Ohio and Charlotte Wolfgang (b. 1869, Wells, Indiana. I couldn't find anything on John H. Mates mother other than her name was Marilla and she was born in Ohio around 1824. I also couldn't find anything on Charlotte Wolfgang's mother Mary Grovier born in Ohio around March 1848. Mary's mother was born in West Virginia and her father was born in New Jersey.
