Is anyone from De Tour on this board?

I just wanted to know if anyone knows what is going to be done with the Sacred Heart Cemetery in DeTour? It's in terrible shape and I know they use to have prisoners take care of it but who is taking care of it now? I was there May 19, 2008 and it's so overgrown you can't hardly see most of the graves. It seems that only a very few graves are even taken care of. Frankly, there are some so overgrown in the back of the cemetery, you can't even see them anymore. Also, I don't know who put up the new wooden crosses for the people who don't have tombstones but I would like to personally thank them as it was way past due for this. Some people have added names to the crosses but many do not have names at all. It does seem that only people in my families graves are even taken care of and a few here and there, other then that, the other people's graves out there seem pretty much forgotten. I tried to do some clean up, but I only had a couple of hours, so I am asking if you are close to this cemetery, or have a relative in this cemetery, please try to take the time to keep these peoples memory alive and clean up if you can. It's so sad to see a cemetery in such disrepair. If anyone has any dirt, many of these grave sites can certainly use it.

Seeking information on the following family. The spelling of the name has been listed in various family & civil records as Neveu, Nephew, Neven, Neville, but recently I have come to believe the name is Neveu:

Mary Neveu, born about 1848/1849 in Sault Ste. Marie, married George Savoy October 10, 1869 in Marquette, MI.

In the marriage record, Mary's parents are given as Michel Neveu & Marguerite Cantin.

In a search on FamilySearch.org, I located a marriage record of Michael Neven, born 1828 to Marguerite Fontaine on February 12, 1849 - Could this be the same couple as Mary's parents?

Also on FamilySearch.org, an LDS member has entered parents of Michel Neven as Alexis Neven & Marie Bassinet & parents of Marguerite Fontaine as Joseph Fontaine & Josette Jolineau.

Have no idea if any of this information is accurate, considering the spelling variations.

Would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might have any information.

Greatfully,

Mike Butland

My great grandfather was Charles Oscar Johnson. He was born around 1864 in Sweden. On Dec 3, 1890 he married my great grandmother Fannie Caffey in Sault Ste. Marie. They ended up around Garnet and Naubinway (I think that in Mackinac County) and had my grandmother. I'm trying to find out any information I can on Charles and where in Sweden he is from. Is there any early records from Sault Ste. Maria that might help me find more about him. He naturalized in Mackinac County but the information from that hasn't helped me.
Henry Young, Born about 1900 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

I am trying to locate any living family of Henry Young, born 1900, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He married someone by the name of Mary and had several children. They are as follows: Roger N. Young, b. abt. 1919, Tony, b. abt. 1920, Henry, born abt. 1922, Grace, b. abt. 1924, Catherine b. abt. 1918, and Charles, b. abt 1916. also listed in the 1920 census is a Step-son, Adam L. Young, born abt. 1913.

Mary and Henry must have divorced, because Henry Young married Alice M. Ford in March, 1934, in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan. They had one son, born in Dec. 1934. They were only married a short time, so I don't know where Henry went after his and Alice divorced.

I am hoping that there might still be someone living in the Sault Ste. Marie area, who might know the family, or possibly be a decendent of Henry and Mary Young, and be willing to help me find Henry's family.

Thanks so much,
Rose
egokee@yahoo.com

Hi,

I'm trying to find info on my ancestor who was a Chippewa supposedly from Sugar Island area. We have found the g- grandmother Bertha Storms whose maiden name was Theriault/Terriault/Terrio. Her parents belonged to the Lax___view Tribe or something similar to that? Watersmeet, Mi ? Sugar Island. The earliest I can find her is 1910 census for Alger County married to a Charles/Charley Storm (Storms, Stormquist). They are there in the 1920 and 1930 census also. Bertha is age 19 in 1910 and gives her birthdate as 1891. Any help finding the parents of Bertha is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shay

Infant Indian adoption BayCity Mich region 1883 ?

I have a great Great Grand mother ADA MAY VIRGINIA SHEAY that was adopted as a infant. I am assuming she was born in the Michigan Bay area region. The year she was born was 1883. Her adopted parents a MICHEAL A. SHEAY and a NANCY J. SHEAY decided on Jan 1st for her birthday. As they did not know her exact birth date so...Jan 1st 1883 became the date. When ADA SHEAY became an adult and married a Wm JOHN STOKES and became a mother herself ,she decided to find her birth mother. Apparently, she did and the family was told never to bring up the subject to her. Even her daughters became angry to family member if brought up. As the family story goes and what was handed down to me. ADA SHEAY was an adopted infant of Indian decent. (Her birth mother was Indian) I have a picture of ADA and she does look Indian. Dark long black hair, skin, and dark eyes. I was told by a distant cousin that her biological mother was a ADA ADKINSON and her birth Father was a FRANK HERBST I was told he was Irish ,English and a trapper.
FRANK HERBST and ADA ADKINSON either were married before the birth of Ada or did get married after ADA SHEAYS birth. Was also told they did have other children. And.........her mother liked liquor.
Now all of any of this story could be flip flopped. I just really don't know. When I was young I was told ADA was a Indian Sioux princess !! But that has pretty much been canceled out by family members. Being told that it was a local tribe. Just don't know which tribe...
Boy... I love family documentation...

My 1st question is ....Does anyone have this surname connection?
2nd....Where would the authorities be located that did adoptions in this time and region if any ?
3 ....I'm hoping maybe I can find ADKINSON and HERBST marriage.
I did find while going through a 1880 census in the Michigan Bay area District 15 page 72.
JOHN ADKINSON family. He was a minister A wife and three boys .
There was a servant living in house hold name NELLIE ADAMSON age 21. Everyone was white. In fact I have found most people were white in Michigan Bay City area. I am not familiar with the region as where everyone lived. Rich ,poor ,Indian, black ,white,German,English etc..

Appreciate any information anyone has. This has been a road blocker.

Thank you Laurie
I am searching for someone who would be willing to look up a couple of items for me in the Bloomer, WI newspapers. I have contacted the library there twice, but get no reply from them. I would be happy to pay for these. I need an obituary for Sarah E Cook who died on 09 October 1936 in Bloomer; also an article/obit for Clyde Steffen, who was accidentally shot during a hunting trip by his brother Albert. Family Bible says that date of death is 17 September 1935; however Bloomer City Cemetery index gives only a date of 1936 for Clyde. Any help will be sincerely appreciated.

Harrison family of Drummond Island

I'm looking for any information on this family that I can find.

Sarah LOWEN born in 1863 in England came from St. Joseph Island and married a James GRANDY, who was much older than herself. They had one daughter, Emma GRANDY 1884-1910 who married David GRAHAM and she is buried on the island.

After James passed away, Sarah Lowen Grandy married David John HARRISON, born abt. 1853 in Ontario, Canada. They had at least 6 children:

1) Ella "Ruth" Harrison b. 1892. I believe she married (1909) and divorced a Samuel WOOD. She then married a KNUDSON and was living in Boyd, Wisconsin in 1922. She may have also divorced from the Knudson, but they had a son together before 1922.

2) Sadie M. Harrison b. abt 1893

3) Ada Belle Harrison b. abt 1896. Married a man of Hispanic descent who was posted by the military in the Soo. Possible surname was MARTINEZ. She then may have moved on to Indiana, and some descendants today live in Texas, where her husband was from.

4) Ellen Harrison b. abt 1901

5) George Franklin Harrison b. 1903, died in quarry accident. He married a Grace ______ abt. 1929 and he is buried on the island.

6) Clifford Harrison, my great-grandfather, b. 1905. He married Dorothy SIMMONS and died in 1983 in St. Ignace.

I am having a hard time finding information on any of Clifford's siblings, and would like to connect with other members of this family.

Looking for background information about Alfred Dallaire and wife Marie Lavoie who lived in Johnswood, Drummond Island in the early 1900s. Alfred died 19 February 1919 and is buried in the Catholic cemetery on Drummond. Is anyone familiar with Alfred Dallaire who could provide background information about where he was employed?

When his sons Ernest and Henry registered for the World War I draft on Sept 12, 1918, they gave their place of employment as KREETAN CO. - Ernest was a second cook and Henry was a mill hand so I am guessing that it was probably a lumber processing company of some sort. Their mother and at least one sister also supposedly worked cooking in a lumber camp. Can anyone provide more information about this company?

Thanks.

Hello - Yesterday I 'rescued' an old photo album from an antique store in Olympia, WA. It appears to have belonged to the Coats / Coates family. Most pictures are not labeled, but the album is in fairly good shape. The Coats farm picture isn't labeled for location other than Michigan, but it is an older picture and might be of interest.

The following are names of people in album:

Tommy Album - child 1895 / Layport family - Grace, Merrit, Herman, Cora and Lela portrait / Susan Coats with Nina Phelps / Captain Oleson at helm of ship / *Coats family farm in winter in Michigan.* The back cover has a couple newspaper clippings regarding the marriage of Arthur Magnuson to Winifred Coats who were going to set up housekeeping in Raymond, Wa. Albert S. Coats owned Coats Shingle Company. I think he had three daughters, Winifred, Florence and Gladys. His wife and two daughters spent a year visiting in California. There is also a wonderful old picture of docked ships with the caption: Bark. Eureka. J. Patterson Master. This is an older picture. I would be happy to scan and send pictures. Also, I'd like to return this album to direct descendants if possible. Thanks, Sue sug53@earthlink.net

Family rumour is that Ethel, Etta and Russell had Chippewa blood lines. So far, I can't prove this.
Etta1st married Harold Barrett in Canada then she married Stanley Craig. Russell took the Craig name after his own father died. Ethel Hart married a Turner and had two boys named Everett and Leo. Leo married a lady with the first name of Myra and they had a daughter named Betty Lou, who in turn had children named Michael, Donny and Dawn.
any help with any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I know they all lived in different areas of Michigan but I don't remember quite where as I was young when I last visited.
Thanks so much in Advance

He was a villagers smith in Groningen in The Netherlands. He was sent to adjust Plough's for the farmers in Holland to an Ames Plow Company in New York, Beckman Str. No 53.
It could be he went to Grandhaven in Michigan. Because there were Groningen sellers for the Plows. He would go as a agent for that company. This is mentioned in a letter sent to the company.
Is someone related tot this L.Heeres maybe? Are there any Heeres-familys in Michigan?

Greetings,
Wilma Heeres, Staphorst, Holland

My sister and I are trying to trace back our family..We have a old bible record that connects us to the William H. Lewis. We think he was born in 1812 and died Sept 6, 1885 and his wife Mary (no last name)born 1812, died on may 26, 1882. I believe they had a son William H. Lewis born July 18,1837, and a daughter Mary Edith born 1844, died jan 4, 1879 in Councial Buff, In. The second William H. Lewis married Minnie Root, Dunn, Lewis born June 20, 1844. They were married May 8,1867. They were our great grandparents. I want to know about the first William listed in our Bible record...Thank you, Margaret and Mary Lewis
