Olive Elizabeth Messier
Olive Elizabeth Messier, age 91, of 815 W. Munising Avenue, Munising, died at 8:45 a.m. on August 11, 2004 at the Superior Health Haven in Munising. She was born February 20, 1913 in Newberry to the late Frank and Mary (Wood) Seymour.
Olive married Charles N. Stickney on November 7, 1931. He was killed in action at Guadalcanal on August 17, 1942. Olive moved to Munising in 1942 with their daughters from Grand Marais and had been a resident of Munising since.
She married King Messier on January 2, 1960. He also preceded her in death August 27, 1983.
Olive was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Munising, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Women of the Moose, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a homemaker and had worked as a Deputy County Treasurer for four years with Virginia Alexander. Olive enjoyed giving gifts to family and friends, playing cribbage (especially with her son-in-law, Carl), and she was an avid reader.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mariellen and Carl Maki of Rochester, Minnesota, grandchildren, Melia Garness, Todd (Doris) Maki, Taina (Lee) Maki-Nelson, Kaara (David) Maki-Waller, Mark (Carrie) Pilger, Brad, Pilger, and Darin Pilger; granddaughter in-law, Geri Maki: thirteen great grandchildren, Kati, Kyle, Nyssa, Amon, Shea, Tate, Payton, Saija, Halle, Josh, David, Tori, and Aryana. Olive was also preceded in death by her daughter Nancy Pilger, grandson Kurt Maki, and great granddaughter Harper Elizabeth Maki-Waller.
Services for Olive will be held on Friday, August 13, 2004. Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. An Order of the Eastern Star Ritual will take place at 11:00 a.m. Virginia Wasmiller will conduct services at 12:00 noon at St. John's Episcopal Church in Munising. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. Memorials in memory of Olive may be directed to St. John's Episcopal Church.
