Passed away Friday, October 25, 2002 in Kalamazoo. Mr. Broekhuis was born July 12, 1922 in Hamilton, to John and Hattie (Klomp) Broekhuis, and had lived in the area all of his life. Art served his country in the United States Navy, and was a Veteran of World War II. For several years he was employed with Michigan Disposal. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Art enjoyed all of his lady friends at Baraga Manor, and enjoyed playing cards with them. Surviving are 3 children, Beverly Durksee of Parma, MI, Carmen VanAsperen of Lakeland, FL, and Irvele Broekhuis of Plainwell; 8 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert Broekhuis of Overisel; many nieces and nephews; and a caring friend of the last 5 years, Taffy Town. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra; 3 brothers, John, Garrett and Stanley; and 3 sisters, Angeline Jeffries, Jenny Engleskan and Esther Stienuyck. In accordance with his wishes there will be no visitation or services. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to Baraga Manor, Otsego.
