Joan E. DUFFY of Otsego, Died June 11, 1999 in a fatal car accident. Joan was born in Hartford on February 27, 1954, the daughter of Michigan J. and Ruth M. DUFFY. She was responsible for the administration, planning, promotion and implementation of the inland and Great Lakes fisheries management programs in the 21 county Southern Lake Michigan Management Unit. John earned bachelors and master’s degrees from Michigan State University and began her career with the DNR in 1980 as a Water Quality Technician. In 1981, she transferred to the Fisheries Division, as a Fisheries Technician at the Institute for Fisheries Research in Ann Arbor. In 1983, she was promoted to Fisheries Habitat Biologist at Imlay City, where she worked until 1985. She then transferred to Plainwell as a Fisheries Habitat biologist and was promoted to District Fisheries biologist for Southwest Michigan in 1995. Joan served as President of the Michigan Chapter of the American Fisheries Society from 1989-90. She was a secretary-treasurer of the chapter from 1984-87. She was secretary/treasurer of the North Central Division of the American Fisheries Society, and served on a variety of committees at the national level. Joan was high respected by her peers as a competent and dedicated fisheries biologist and administrator. She cared deeply about the natural resources of the stye and the people who use them. She enjoyed traveling, camping, the company of friend and family, fine food and wine and bluegrass music. Her father, Michael J. DUFFY, preceded her in death. She is survived by her mother, Ruth M. DUFFY; sisters, Judy (Ken) STAHL, Barbara (George) BRAY, and Rosemary (Andy) NUHFER, and brothers, Michael (Sue); Walter (Diane), and John (Kara); 1 aunt, Margie KILLEEN numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and 2 cats, Oscar and Hattie. A Funeral Mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hartford on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Lunch well be served after the service.
