Missing Grave of Birt S. Beers Around 1945.

from: beers1950@yahoo.com
to: anyone with info.

I have a great-grandfather in Michigan who probably died around 1945. I do not know where he died or date. His name is Birt S. Beers: born in Middlebury, Elkhart County, Indiana 1869. His parents moved from Romulus, Cayuga County, New York and married in 1862. Their names, Jonas Beers and Rosetta Lamphear. My missing ancester, Birt, had an older sister, Lottie and a younger sister, Cora. Jonas' wife, Rosetta, dies giving birth to Cora in 1873. No other marriage occurred after she passed away.

Birt Beers moved to Michigan, probally Kalkaska or Antrim Counties, around 1893 and married Clara Jane Manney (Manning). Her parents are from Elk Rapids, Antrim County, Michigan. They had four children and after the 1900's Clara divorced Birt; she remarries an Alex Holton (probably 1910-1914) and has a child together: Doris Edna Holton.

As a child, I heard stories about him, whether true or not I don't know. Birt was an excellent shot and hunted deer for the Michigan deer hunters during season up in that neck-of-the-woods. He made some money helping those who wanting to secure game. I also know that he might of been either Amish or Mennonite (so was his father, Jonas, when living in Indiana). Birt own some land that would be in the back of some woods, I think, in Kalkaska County and, as far as I know, lived there until he died (but I don't really know that that is true either).

I assume that there are many grave sites across America that are unmarked or sites that families barried loved ones on their own property. I'm posting this for you, but hoping others might read and respond. Thanks.

My ancestor, Lucius Warren BELL, lived in Chestonia for at least 35 years and was the proprietor of a saloon and a pool room. In the 1930 Census he was a boarder with the Eby Family. Lucius died in November 1943 and was buried in the Star Township Cemetary in Alba. Our family has no record that he was married but, coincidentally, there is an Elizabeth B. BELL buried at the same cemetery. She lived from 1876-1953. I am hopeful that some look-up can be made to ascertain whether or not Elizabeth was married to Lucius (he sometimes went by his initials "LW") and, if she was, other information about her. Thank you for any assistance.

Looking for genealogical information on George and Catherine Makel and
their descendants. I believe they came to this country in late 1800s as
adults with six children. One of their sons was Daniel Makel, who was my
grandfather. My understanding is that Daniel was born in Hessen-Nassau,
Prussia in 1881. He came to this country at 9 years of age I think. I am
sure that they are related to Scholls, Schroeders. I think Wentzell was
a city or area where they settled. I'm just beginning this process so I
need some help.

I called the Bellaire Public Library and they were unable to advise me. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Looking for accident records regarding this company and its' owned lumber camps from cir 1919. My ggrandfather, Joseph Elam perished in a lumber accident in the Alba area during this time period. As he was a widowerer with a small child at the time, we have never been unable to discover his burial place. Have been told that the company took care of their own when there were no known relatives. Any facts, info or clues appreciated.

My gr-gr-gr grandfather, Reuben RANDALL had four children; Charlotte Ann, Austin Pomeroy, Parker Patten, and Alvin Elmer.

Charlotte and Alvin moved to Antrim county and lived their lives there. Charlotte married brothers, Benjamin DONALDSON and later Samuel Myrick Donaldson. She is buried in Southern Cemetery in Bellaire. S. M. Donaldson died "by accident" and might be buried in Mancelona at the cemetery off airport road, S.W. Mancelona.

Alvin was a machinist, and lived in Mancelona. He married Lydia KAUFFMANN\\, born in Indiana. They were in the 1880 Census in Mancelona. I haven't found where they are buried. Reuben's other children lived in downstate Michigan. I am a gr-gr-grandson of Parker P. Randall. We don't know a lot about our northern kin, but I would be happy to share what we have with you.
We have pictures of the place but no one still living who remembers just where it was.

Did Helena, MI, have in 1935 a paper named the Independent and a "Placer Hotel"?

In looking up some info on my first cousin, once-removed (Kathryn Overstreet; later married name, Lege), I found this article on a web page of "Michigan articles" (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~overstrt/Newspaper/mi.htm) from the "Helena Independent" that describes her visit to her uncle, who was staying at the "Placer Hotel." It turns out that the Helena, Montana, newspaper is now known as the Independent-Record, and they have/had a Placer Hotel. Did this paper and hotel name also exist back then in Helena, Michigan? (Kathryn grew up in Minneapolis, so it would make more sense for her to visit Michigan than Montana ... but I would love to know the facts. (I don't have such detailed info on the wherabouts of on her uncle, Charles Jackson.)

Many thanks,

-- Mike

I am searching for a death record for my Gr-gr-grandmother. Her name was Diana or Anna Tallman. She married Charles Aaron Hardy on 30 Sept. 1880 in South Arm Township, Charlevoix County.
In 1884, in Banks Twp, Antrim County she gave birth to a son, Judson Willis Hardy. In 1886 she gave birth to twins. One infant died soon after birth, and I believe the remaining twin died within a week or two, if not less. Diana died shortly after, in April of 1886. I would like to find a record of her death, and the infants too, if possible, and the location of her burial.

I'm also searching for a death record for her husband Charles Aaron Hardy. He was known by "Chat" and was enumerated on one census as Chatworth, and his gravestone at Norwood Cemetery lists him as Chester. He is buried next to his sister Almeda Hardy. There are no dates on his stone as far as I know to give a clue to his death. He was born between 1830-1840 in NY.

Thanks in advance for any help

I am wondering also who the town was named after. My ancestor Silas Brown and family migrated from Northern New York and were in Torch Lake Township. One of the daughters Carrie married a Lewis Banks. This was on 1900 Census. Their children were Irin b. 1890, Blanche b. 1892 and Lewis b. 1897. At that time Silas was 74 years old so he probably died there. I have checked some of the cemeteries with no luck. I have not been able to trace the family any further.
So I am wondering if my Lewis Banks was connected with the Banks Township. He was a druggist. It is a long shot but he may be a descendant of the Banks in that town.
If you can give me any information, I would appreciate it.
Marilynn VanBrocklin
An Eben McAllister, born 31 May 1825 in Bald Eagle PA and died 14 April 1904 in Echo had a wife nee Basha Helen Root, born in 1835 in New York. Eben and B. Helen McAllister had at least two daughters -- Mary aned Susan.

From an obituary in a community in which he had lived (Fremont, Steuben, Indiana):

EBEN P. McALISTER, 31 May 1825 - 14 Apr 1904

Eben P. McAlister, a much respected citizen of Echo, Michigan, died at
the residence of his son, Wilson H., on Thursday, April 14, 1904, at the
advanced age of 78 years, 10 months and 14 days.
He was born at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania, and was married to Miss B.
Helen Root, at Jamestown, Ind., March 10, 1852. He resided in Indiana for
27 years and in North Dakota for 16 years. He spent three years in
Milford, Kansas, and has since 1901 made his home in Echo.
His family consisted of seven children of whom three survive him and
grieve over the loss of a revered and loved father. He had been a
Christian for more than forty years. In former years he was one of the
best tenor singers and music teachers in the communities in which he
resided. He was a very skillful workman at his trade as blacksmith. He
was much respected in Echo and took great interest in the neighborhood
about him, especially in its religious development. He and his wife were
members of the Congregational church recently organized in Echo. His wife
deeply mourns his loss, but looks joyfully forward to meeting him again
soon, within the gates of pearl.
There was a larger attendance at the funeral services, which were
conducted by Rev. E. M. Corey.

... I am aware that B. Helen Root is his second wife. His daughters, still reasonably young, are likely to have been among the three surviving offspring of Eben McAllister in addition to the aforementioned Wilson H, McAllister. .

I've recently discovered there was a church, M.E. Church, existed on a relative’s property in South Milton.  I have George H. Wealch as the owner of property, and have the following information on him;

ELGIN, Antrim County: George H. Wealch became the postmaster of this office in Milton Township on September 1st, 1875 and the office operated until December 15th, 1881.

Obit: George H. Wealch died Friday at the home of his son, John, after a lingering illness, aged 75 years. He leaves three sons, Elmer and George of South Milton, and John, of Angell, and two daughters, Mrs. Lester Hollenbeck, of North Milton, and Mrs. Orson Park of Alden. Mr. Wealch lived here a number of years and has a large circle of friends who sympathize with the bereaved family.

He formerly live in South Milton and a number from there attended the funeral which was held Sunday at the Elk Lake M. E. Church.

Thank you in advance for the help.
Scott

I am trying...without much luck...to locate any information from this area relating to my great-grandparents (named above) and my grandmother, Martha May Tobey, their fifth child of ten. Surely, such a large family would not have gone unrecorded in census and other records in Antrim County, but I have yet to find any reference to any Tobeys in this area.

The family lived in Antrim in 1896 when my grandmother was born, and moved to Washington State around 1907. I know they left from Mancelona because there was a baby born to the family immediately prior to their move and since the family left Mancelona and arrived in Centralia, Washington before the child was even named, they decided to name her for the beginning and end of their journey...yes, my great-aunt's name was Mancelona Centralia Smith.

At any rate, if anyone can assist me I'd be greatly appreciative.

Bryan Fisher
Mariner719@yahoo.com
Orlando, Florida

I am looking for any information anyone might have on a Floyd Daniel Gardner, who lived in Antrim County and died in approximately 1918 (I do not have an exact date). Floyd Gardner was married to Hazel Kessler and was the father of my grandfather, Donald Gardner. Unfortunately, since Floyd died when my grandfather was quite young nobody in my family knows or has much information on him. U.S. Census records show Floyd Gardner living in Chestonia Township in 1900 and Star Township in 1910. The 1920 census lists his widow Hazel living in Star township. Any information you have that you could share would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Greg Gardner
I am seeking additional information on collateral realtives of mine. Monroe DICKINSON and his wife Eugenia BARKER are enumerated in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census returns as residents of Chestonia Township. Both are buried at the Star Township Cemetery, east of Alba.

Monroe DICKINSON was born in 1840 in NY and died in 1928 (no further info on date or place of his death). Eugenia BARKER DICKINSON, daughter of George W. BARKER and Wealthy TYLER, was born Jan. 1850 in Ontario Co., NY and died in 1946 (no further info on date or place of her death). The 1900 census shows their daughter Vera Ione DICKINSON who was born in July 1884 in MI. I have not found anything else on Vera.

I'm still looking for Eugenia in the 1930 census; might she have gone to live with her daughter Vera after the 1928 death of her husband Monroe?

I also now wonder if there's a connection between Monroe DICKINSON and his wife Eugenia BARKER and the couple who platted the Village of Alba, William J. BARKER and Eunice D. BARKER? While I do know that there is no sibling relationship between William J. BARKER and Eugenia BARKER DICKINSON, I do wonder if Eunice BARKER's maiden name might be DICKINSON, and if so, are she and Monroe DICKINSON related?

Sincerely,
Lorrie D.
Alba History - Barker

Does anyone know more about the couple who originally platted the Village of Alba, William and Eunice D. Barker? The original plat shows that two of the streets were named Barker and Dickinson. Might this be the maiden name of Eunice D. Barker?

I am posting another query about collateral realtives of mine whom I've recently learned are buried at the Star Twp. Cemetery, Monroe Dickinson and his wife Eugenia Barker. Now I wonder if there's a link between these two couples?

Sincerely,
Lorrie D.
My grandparents John Daly and Aca Ann Smith Daly were in Antrim County from 1880 to about 1900 and all their children were born there, Jemima, John James, Grace, Rebecca and Alonzo. Do these names connect to any other researchers?
