She died October 20, 1954. She was 84 years old. She is the daughter of Dan Newman who also homesteaded in Skanee, Mi. I have been told that he had seven children. Five of them are Maria Newman Elmblad, Magdella Newman Ohman, Alma Ohman Kingstrom and Johanna Ohman Wick, and Petter Newman. Two of the sisters married men with the last names of Oust and Seavoy. This information has been given to me by Eunice Dove who is a descendent of Allen Elmblad. I know that Johanna had no children and I also met her over 50 years, ago. At that time, she was living with Arthur and Walter at the Ohman homestead. She had a glass eye. She is buried at the Skanee cemetery, as well as Magdella, and Marie. Petter is there, as well.

Anna Charlotta Ohman married Olaf August Paulson on January 3, 1894. They are reported to be the first couple married at Zion. There were no children born of this union.

Heddwig Ulricka Ohman married Lars August Gardberg who was born August 14, 1855. He died August 16, 1903. On June 15, 1008 Heddwig Gardberg married August Paulson. Heddwig is noted as Hedvig, Hedwig and Hedvick, also. There were no children born of either of her two marriages.

When the Ohmans migrated from Sweden, they are noted and remembered as having come from Delarna, Sweden.

I am a descendent of August Paulson who returned to his birthplace, Gotland, Sweden and brought my grandmother, Ida Jakobson to America. She was much younger. Her daughter was Marie, who was my mother.

I am looking forward to learning more about your family and sharing what I have that belonged to your ancestors.
Just wondered if anyone out there knew of a cite that listed the individual Loggers names. I have been hunting for a Great Grandfather for a long time now. His name is Frank E. Bell born sept. 1876 in Michigan and the only clue I have about him is that he was a logger. Thanks for any help or clues as to how to find him. Have not found him on any census since 1900. Thanks, Jackie

Hendrick - Judge of Probate

I am looking for William Hendrick. He was in Baraga , L'Anse in 1880 census listed as Probate Judge. His wife Nancy A. or(Annette N.) died there in Apr.of 1874. I have looked at all of the cemetery listings on the Baraga website, but I can't find him. Are there any Indian Records that I can look at for the Chippawa? The woman on the 1880 census with him is listed as indian. She is on the Indian rolls on Ancestry.com, I just haven't found any more on him after the 1880 census. Thanks for any help.

POW/MIA Korean War, Baraga Co. CHALIFOUX, MADOSH

I am searching for the family of two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Baraga County, Michigan as their home of record.

Soldier: LAWRENCE FRANCIS CHALIFOUX
Born: September 8, 1908 Caucasian
Date of loss: Feb. 13, 1951 MIA

Soldier: HUBERT ALEXANDER MADOSH
Born: March 8, 1926 Caucasian
Date of loss: November 30, 1950 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 102 families from Michigan that have not been located. There are two families from Baraga County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net

Rikhard Laiho along with Dr Rudolph Pinola's work
has been put into a database. It is a list of Finnish American's lured back to Soviet Karelia.Finland lost (ceded)
part of Karelia to Russia after the war.
Mr Laiho has been kind enough to tell us to spread the list to those who ask. It has 1,585 names of people. Some were executed and others never got to come back to America or return to Finland.
If any of you has missing Finnish family, they may be among this list.
I can send it to those who ask, it is in a Microsoft works format.
Alicia Marshall
alicia@chartermi.net

Titus Johnson (Tuppiluhta?) and Sofie Hedvig Ahola

From the translation of: Amerikan Suomalaisten Historia by Rev.Ilmonen , 1926, (translated by Alicia Marshall)
Pequaming [MI]:
Titus JOHNSON (Tuppiluhta) from Ylistaro.
I believe that this is the Titus Johnson that married Sofie Hedvig Ahola, daughter of Stephan Olsen Ahola and Ida Marie Abrahamsdatter Luusua. Sofie was born 22 Dec 1878, Vadso, Norway and emigrated with her family about 1888, to Michigan's Keweenaw or Houghton County. She married Titus Johnson 3 Nov 1894 in Calumet, Houghton, MI. Titus was born about 1872 in Finland. They were married by Rev. A.L. Heideman, witnesses: Sofia Torsberg and Andrew Lundgren, both of Calumet, MI.
After their marriage, I cannot find a trace of either of them on any records. Could they have used the farm name that he may have carried from Finland? I've had no luck finding any document with the Tuppiluhta surname, so wonder if there is an error on the spelling? Do you know what possible spelling that is close to the Finnish surname (Tuppiluhta) that I might be most likely to find on census records, etc?
Thank you for any help you may give!
Victoria married a Bielski.

Seeking cemetery of Olga Marie (Pulkinen) Rautio Toivonen Hill, 1882-1965

Somewhere in or near the town of Baraga my grandmother, Olga (Pulkinen) Rautio Toivonen Hill, is buried. We visited her grave in the summer of 1977 or 1978. All I can recall of its location is that two of her sons thought the cemetery was right next to the church, but it turned out to be a few miles away. They were Finns so it was likely a Lutheran church.

After visiting the cemetery, we stopped by the local newspaper and they printed a small article on the out-of-town visitors to Olga's grave.

Her third/last husband, the one who lived in Michigan, was Charles Hill, who died in 1963. He and Olga married sometime after 1950. She died in 1965.

Olga's 2nd husband died in 1950, Gusti Toivonen. I'm not sure if he might be buried in Baraga, also. I'm not clear on exactly when she moved from Tioga Co., NY, to Baraga, MI.

Would some kind soul please help me to discover what cemetery Olga is in? Any additional info would be great, too. Thanks!
Death Records for Emma Morin (Gauthier)&Eliza (Sharp) Nesbitt

I am searching for information about two of my paternal great grand-mothers.

Eliza Sharp(e) born in 1864 in Canada married Hugh Nesbitt (born in 1858 in Canada) after 1880. They lived in Baraga. He was a hardware merchant according to the 1900 census. They had four children: Mary Margaret (1886); William (1889); Madeline (1895) and Hugh Gerald--my gf (1897).

Eliza died somewhere between 1900 and 1910--Hugh is listed as a widower in the 1910 records.

I am also looking for Emma Morin (born 1884) who married Alphonse Gauthier. They lived in Pelkie and had two children Mildred---my gm (in 1903) and Malvin (in 1906.) Emma died in 1906. Alphonse (my ggf) had a general store in Pelkie in the early 1900's---there is a photo of it on the Baraga County Historical Society website.

I cannot find any information about Eliza or Emma and would like to know when they died etc. and possibly who their parents were or where they are buried.

I am the "last" Nesbitt in my family that I know of (only two Nesbitt boys---one was a priest (my father's brother) and my father only had me---and I'm a girl. I would love to be able to put together a family tree for my four children...

Thank you...
He was born in Canada. He was married to Clara Elizabeth (Goldbach. She was born in Michigan) in appx. 1908 (according to the 1930 census). They had several children-Mary C., Catherine, Robert Jr., Anna J(?), William, George D., Leonard C., Lorraine May (my Grandmother) and Kenneth G.

I also have him listed in the 1920's census, but I lose him before that.

Any additional info would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

Can anybody help me? I`m looking for information about my grandfather John A. Aho. He was born in Reisjärvi, Finland, 12.3.1879. He died in L'Anse, Michigan 19.4.1947 and was burried in Alston Cemetery. He came for the first time to Calumet 1906, back to Finland 1911 and for the second time back to Michigan in 1912. I suppose he used the name Juho Aate Ajakainen during the first stay in Michigan and propably Adiel Ajakainen in the beginning of the second stay. After a time time he took the John A. Aho. He lived his last years in Pelkie, Michigan.

I'm very pleased if I can get any information

Markku Aho
Kokkola
Finland
markku.aho@cop.fi

Good Morning

Eino Seppala
April 12, 1899, born in Nurmo Vasaan Laani Finland
Son of Andrew Seppala and Sanna Halmesmaki
He came to Covington, MI in 1904
Married: Ida Palo, Dec. 27, 1926
Worked for the Baraga County Road Commission for 12 years
Death: Dec. 24, 1969 he was a patient at the Baraga County Memorial
Hospital in L'Anse, MI
Funeral was at: Bethany Evangelical Church, Covington, MI
Survived by:
Wife
Sons:
Robert, Lake Worth, Florida
James, Detroit, MI
Harvey, Las Vega, Nevada
Sisters:
Liisa Koski, Finland
Mrs. Sanna Maki, Superior, WI
Mrs. Charles Lempi Hutula, Covington, MI
Mrs. Einar Lydia Erickson, Covington, MI
Brothers:
Victor, Lake Worth, Florida
Nels, Covington, MI
three (3) grandchildren and several nieces and nephews

The 1920 L'Anse Sentinels did not carry an obit for Andrew (his father)

Are any of Eino's three children still living? Since none were born in
Baraga County there are no records, if you have their date of births there
may be a mention in the L'Anse Sentinels of their births, but for that
research I would need the dates of births and also of marriage, often times
even though not registered here the paper would carry some of these events

I will try in the next few days to get this all typed up and send you a
"hard copy" of what I was able to find

thank you for your donation to the BCHS

Jim

Hello there! My name is Laura Cooper Fenimore. I have recently just learned that a close relative was buried in the BARAGA RURAL CEMETERY on 14 April 1922. Her name was Grace Beatrice Scribner. I was wondering if somebody up in that neck of the woods could take it upon themselves to see if there is a grave marker for Grace, and if so, to photograph it for me? I would be very appreciative, and of course if there is any more information I can provide I would gratefully do so.

I would like to do some family research for my girlfriend Kristi Seppala. Her father is James(Jim) Seppala: Her uncle's name is Bob(Robert) Seppala: Her Grandfather's name(as far as she remembers-died in 1968) is Eino Seppala: All three were from Covington.

addendum below:

Name: SEPPALA EINO

Date of Death: 12-1969
Date of Birth: 04-12-1899
Last Residence: COVINGTON MI 49919
BARAGA COUNTY
Country: USA

letter from relative:

Hi Kriss,
Sorry you haven't heard from me...my internet connection was down this week and I am finally getting to my email. I think we may have already spoken about this, but Kristi's grandfather's name was Eino...he had brothers, William, Nels, and Victor. He also had sisters, Lempi Hutula (she was Lempi Makela, but was a widow and married Charlie Hutula in later life), and Lydia (married Einar Erickson). There was another sister who died in the early 1900's from the flu or pneumonia, but I can't remember what her name was at the moment.

So, if you find out or read any articles from or about people from that area of the UP, you probably are reading about Kristi's relatives!!! Talk to you later...

Ellen(kristi's mom)
I have NOT been about to locate anything that documents this: birth certificates, immigration, passenger lists, census, etc. So far this just sketchy family history.

My understanding is that Oscars siblings were: Bruno, John, William (aka chinkie) Sylvia and Rosie.

Some say that Nels surname before he came to the US was Frum.

I have most of the history of Oscar once he reached Kingston, MN (1920) - however am in the dark as to his parents, when they arrived to MI - where they came from (is Nels of Finnish or Swedish decent?)

I know that the John G. Huovinen Family gained citizenship in 1888 - although I have been unable to uncover anything that tells me if Helen Huovinen is either a daughter or sister of John G or any relation at all.

Please contact me at cakozick@msn.com if you have any information.

Please help this Dave with any info any of y'all may have:
"My grandfather lived in Marquette and Houghton counties from 1890 to 1913 and worked as an iron and copper miner. My mother was born in Calumet in 1908. My interest in Baraga County is that my grandfathers older brother, Samuel Blanchette, was supposedly living in Pequaming around the same time. I have located my grandfather, Alphonse, in the 1900 census in Calumet. I am interested in how to obtain census information for Pequaming (L'Anse township) and catholic church birth/death records for this period. Both he and my grandfather were married in Princeville, Arthabaska County, Quebec from whence they came. Samuel died around 1904 and his family at some point moved to the Duluth, MN area. My grandfather took his family back to Montreal in 1913.
Any assistance you can provide or links to other places would be appreciated.
Thanks

Dave Quinton
Auburn, Calif "
daveq@vfr.net

John Courtney family

I found this request for info in some old e-mail. Please, if anyone can help Ann with her research, contact this message board OR her directly:

"My grandfather, Joseph Courtney was Baraga County Treasure when he married my Grandmother Irene Higgins. Irene taught in a one room school house in Baraga. I remember going there with my father, John S. Courtney of Marquette, MI, to see the school house. It had blown over in a storm but the remains of the building were still there. Where can I write for any information on my Grandparents, Joseph and Irene Courtney. I would like to know anything you may have in your records about this family when they lived in Baraga. I do know that they had two sons born in Baraga, Frank and Charles. But my main interest is Joseph and Irene. When did they arrive there and are there any records of their employment or possibly old directories show- ing where they lived. I hope you can steer me in the right direction. Maybe you could tell me who to write to for this information or where the information may be kept if it exists.
On the marriage certificate of Joseph and Irene the date is October 20, 1891. His occupation at this date was County Treasurer, Baraga, MI. They were married in Palms, MI. This was the birthplace of Irene Higgins Courtney.
Many thanks for your help.
Ann E. Courtney "
COURTS728@aol.com
