She also says that her fiance then and later husband, Earle Hewitt, was on a transatlantic troop ship "returning hundreds of pine boxes holding bodies of our dear boys in service, many of whom died overseas with the flu." She quoted Earle as stating that "the boxes would be piled like cord wood on the dock in New York City after arrival." "
