Samuel R. AMBS, Sherwood, 71, of 1215 Wattles Rd., a former leader of St. Joseph County 4-H, died June 26, 1997, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. He was born Feb. 26, 1926 in Matteson Twp., a son of Ernest J. and Edna C. (HARNESS) AMBS. On June 1, 1946, he married Betty L. WATSON in Colon. He had lived in the rural Sherwood and Colon area all of his life and had wintered in Texas since 1991. He was a 1944 graduate of Colon High School. He was a self-employed farmer and had also worked at Miller Bros., Colon, Colon Community Schools, Kalamazoo Manufacturing and Creation Windows, Elkhart, Ind. He was a member of the FFA and a 16 year leader of the St. Joseph County 4-H. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Pamela) BURKETT, Coldwater, and Sylvia AMBS, Baraga; a son and daughter-in-law, Ernest and Sue AMBS, Sherwood; grandchildren, Douglas and Marlys AMBS, Three Rivers, Keith AMBS, Sherwood, Brian HALL, Quincy, Elizabeth and Mike SOWLER, Coldwater, Ernest AMBS II, Sherwood, Michael AMBS, Quincy and Samantha AMBS, Sherwood; a step-grandson, Harold BURKETT Coldwater; two step-granddaughters, Darinda BLASKIE and Darla STANTON; several great-grandchildren; an aunt; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one grandson, William E. SIZEMORE. Relatives and friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Saturday and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Schipper Funeral Home, Ltd. Colon, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev.
