Not sure if this applies, but my Dad, Howard Russell Jacobsen/Jacobson was born in Rudyard, MI on 4/13/1914. His mother was Elizabeth Christie and his father was Chris Jacobsen. My dad was born at home so no formal birth certificate was found. When he entered the Navy during WW2 he was required to have one made and had a couple neighbors who were present at the time of his birth to fill in the information in order to get the birth certificate. They at that time spelled his name as Jacobson and not Jacobsen as he normally did. All Navy and formal documentation was then filled in with the "son" spelling. Dad's siblings all spelled their names Jacobsen. They were: Sadie, Stella, Jennie, Mattie, Leonard. Dad died 9/9/1976 in Belpre, Ohio

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

You will need to supply DOB's + birthplaces for all those listed here.

Hello. I'm trying to solve a mystery and I'm hoping someone can help me. My GGG Uncle Perl, showed up in the 1930 census married to a woman named Mary. Up until then, I had only known he was married to my GGG Aunt Iva. Perl was born in Allegan Co, 31 Aug 1888. He died, according to his obit. on 1 Mar 1944 in Calhoun Co. I would LOVE to know what Mary's maiden name was and any additional information on she and my uncle! I would love any information or advice that is available.

Jodi VanEngen Walder

Would your wife have any information on Charles Oscar Johnson? I was able to find out some things from his Naturalization papers. They said he was born on 4 April 1864 in Jon Koping Sweden. However I have tried looking in that area of Sweden in that time frame and have been unable to find him. I'm wondering if he was actually born somewhere else but emigrated from Joh Koping instead. Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,
Alan Stephen

ALGER AND LILLIAN MENDE - where is the Cochrane clock?

1930 Chippewa census lists:
Alger J Mende 30
Lillian Mende 27
Maryian Mende 10
Paul Mende 7
Elton Mende 4
Mary Mende 63
Doris Mende 24
Francis Hoffman 1

Searching for an antique clock that was retrieved from New Richmond in Quebec in the mid 1960's, and repaired by Alger. The clock was to have been returned to Lorraine Cochrane after repair, but Alger thought it was his to keep, and Lorraine didn't have the heart to tell him otherwise. From a relative: "Grandma Mains (Lorraine Cochrane Mains) had a cousin, Lil Mende, who lived in Sault Ste. Marie with her husband, Alger Mende. Alger was a clock repairman with experience repairing antique clocks. The Mainses often visited the Mendes when they were in northern Michigan. Well, Grandma and Grandpa Mains (Lorraine and Arthur) took the clock to Alger and Lil's house to ask Alger to bring it back into good working order. When they arrived, Grandma said, "I have a surprise for you." Alger took this to mean that the clock was a gift to him, and was delighted to receive such a beautiful clock. My grandmother did not have the heart to tell him that the "surprise" was just to have him work on it & then return the clock to them. So she said nothing, and later on Alger wrote to tell them that he had indeed fixed the clock and it was working beautifully. Lil was also a Cochrane, so the clock stayed in the family, but no one in our branch knows where it is now. With Alger and Lil, Arthur and Lorraine all deceased, we have lost contact with that branch of the family."

We are documenting the Cochranes in a newsletter, and we are now asking, where is the clock? Not that we want it back, but we'd like to know where it is, see a picture, and have the current owners understand how much happened to get it back into the Cochrane family. Lil was evidently related to the Cochranes, but we'd like to know what happened to that lovely clock.

Is there a descendant who might know about it? Or is it lost to history now?

Census show Mary Sims lived with Joseph and Lizie after being widowed.

Joseph and Lizie had six children : Albert, Thomas Alfred, Mary Tressa, Joseph L., Andrew Wilbert and Georgiana.

My father James Angell Barton and my Grandfather Thomas Alfred Barton also lived in that area.

I am interested in finding sources, contacts, stories or any other data that might help tracking/documenting the Pickford Bartons and The family of Andrew and Mary Sims.

The Bartons came to the area from St.Joseph Island Algoma Ontario from Darlington, Durham, Ontario from somewhere in Ireland. I am especially interested in any information that might lead me to the Irish geographic origins of the Bartons.

thanks,
James W Barton
Hello, I am bill willis, son of margaret emma and william g willis. My mother is sister to aunt Lizzie as we used to call her. Mark was our uncle. My maternal grand parents were John
and Victoria pope of kinross, and Freddie and Jerry Garlinghouse were my cousins. I have lost so many of my relatives that I am surprised to see some of these names.
Hello, Thanks for the reply. My great grandmother was married in MN about 1880 so I don't think anyone would remember her at this point. I know her family migrated to Kinross and what was then Stevensborough ( they tell me if's Dafter now). In the Kinross Lakeside Cemetery are Adeline, Grant, Elizabeth, Joseph, Lacy G. , Mark, and Ruby, all Garlinghouses. Jasper and I think it was William who also lived in that area.

Betty
