Where did Mathilda and her daugter go from Bark River?

Hi!

I have been trying to find some of my Swedish ancestors and have done very well thanks to nice people who reads this site.

So I'm trying here again, because I have a missing Mathilda Oberg born in Sweden the 17th of Febr 1863.
She married Axel Gustafson in Sweden (July 1886) they also had a daughter Anna Fredrika Gustafson, born 7th of Oct 1886.
In 1887 they went to America.

I know both Mathilda and her daughter got on the boat but I have only seen Mathilda (Gustafson) in 1900's Census (Bark River Township, Delta, Michigan). Here she lives with her brothers John and Chas Oberg...

According to that she has a child - alive.

The question is Where? And where did Mathilda go after that? Has she changed her name back to Oberg...??

If anyone could help me find them, I would be very grateful!!

Best Regards Marie

Samantha,

This is so exciting! I didn't even know that Gwendolyn existed until a few years ago, and now I've made a connection to her.

Mike Spieth is my first cousin Harriet Williams' son. I have a lot of information on the Williams family going back to 1790. There were, however, no Native Americans that I've found. Mike has the information on his Williams line on his website, but I have additional information not found there on Anna and her other two children. I vividly remember going to visit Aunt Ann in Milwaukee, so now you know someone who actually knew your great grandmother!

I don't know Gwendolyn's last name or her father's name, so there is information you can share with me that is of great interest. Please e-mail me directly at pab@up.net

Thanks so much!

Pat

Pat,

Thank you so much for replying! Gwendolyn is my paternal grandmother. My father died when I was 3 and I didn't have any contact with his family until recently. His sisters say that Gwendolyn was part Native American on her mother's side (Anna) however I can't find any info regarding that and I sent to the State of Michigan for a copy of her birth certificate and they couldn't locate one for her. Did your grandfather ever mention any thing about being Native American? I have also exchanged e-mails with Mike Spieth, who I'm guessing is a cousin or brother of yours? he said he hadn't heard anything about being Native American.

My grandfather, Roger Williams, was born in Delta County in 1897. He had an older sister Anna born in 1892. She was married three times and had one child by each marriage. Her first child never married and her third child had one daughter who also never married. I only learned that she had another child when searching census records. This child was named Gwendolyn, born about 1915. The last I knew that is documented, Anna was living in Wauwatosa, WI (1930 census). I remember, however, going to visit her as a child in what I was told was Milwaukee in either the late 1950s or early 1960s.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Pat

Hi, I hope this message reaches you as it has been 5 years since you posted the one I am responding to! I have family from Delta County, my GGGrandmother was Anna Williams (1892). I am having a hard time gathering info on her as my aunts believe that she was Native American, but I haven't been able to locate that info. The State of MI cannot locate her birth record either. Any info you may have would be helpful. Thanks, Samantha

I am searching out my 2nd Great Grandmother Matha Gray?
She first appears in the Census of 1870 as 7 years old in Garden Michigan. Enumerated as a family memeber with the David & Isabela Gray Family. We know she is not their child. She married Daniel Kelly 15 years her senior.Daniel came to Garden by way of Canada. He was the son of Hugh Kelly & Catherine nee Collins. All three from Ireland.

In the 1880 census Martha is married to Daniel and had a infant daughter Catherine. Then they had a son Thomas Kelly in 1881.

On Martha's Death cert. of 1907 her parents are listed as unknown. Daniel Kelly died 3 years later.

Thomas Kelly died in Garden, MI in 1914. Does not appear to of had a wife or children. On Thomas' death cert his mother name is listed as Martha Strong? Big questions Now??? Where did the name strong come from. And where is the direct realitives? Since three years later on his sisters death cert she is listed as Martha Unknown. Of course the giver of the information on the death cert's were 2 diffrent people.

I am searching any possible clue to lead me to her true family. SO if you have any direct information I would certainly love to hear from you.

Since several of the Gray children married into the Trueblood family just thought there may be some insight from the Trueblood's.

I know a bit about Jimmy Jones, who lived on the same street in Gladstone when I was a child in the fifties. Olive (or her family )came from Canada, I think, and said she was of Scottish descent. They only had one daughter, Beverly. She was living in or near Chicago at that time. She and her husband, whose name I don't know, had three children: Pamela, Mark and Joel, who were about my age, therefore born after WW2.

Is there someone in Delta Co., who might be willing to do a bit of detective work for me? I have a family story about the death/murder of a child by the surname WHITE, probably sometime in the 1920's. Ostensibly killed accidentally by his father in a disciplinary incident, I believe the father, surname WHITE, was prosecuted and imprisoned for the incident. I have few details, but I think the child was 5-10 years of age when the incident happened. I have the names for several of this family who lived in Delta during the period in question, and I can supply that information if anyone is willing to help.
Bob Snyder
Midland, Michigan

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about the St. Louis family that lived in Escanaba from about the 1890s-1970s. I know the parents were Joseph St. Louis b. abt 1858, & Maria Margaret Hjort b. abt 1867, but I do not know when they died. I believe they died in Escanaba. I know there were a total of 6 children, but I have limited information on them. Below is what I know of the children:

Angrea J St. Louis b. abt 1894
Harry Hjort St. Louis b. abt 1895, I believe he was in the military
Myrtle J St. Louis b. abt 1897
Joseph F St. Louis b. abt 1900
George St. Louis b. 22 Mar 1905, Escanaba, d. 7 Mar 1989, Ann Arbor, (I do not know where George is buried)
Stanley St. Louis b. 8 Dec 1910 in Escanaba, d. 22 Jun 1982 in Escanaba, buried in Lakeview Cemetery

If family stories are true, I believe that George and Stanley were U.S. Diplomats, but their parents and other siblings are a mystery to me, as well as where George is buried.

If anybody knows anything about this family, or has suggestions of where I could look for more information, I would really appreciate it

In census 1900 I find them living in Masonville. The boys are probably born in Escanaba, Gladstone or Masonville.

I am looking for living descendents of Roy and Arthur, but I need their birthdates to come further.
George Peterson and his father Ole [Olea - Ola] Bark/Ford River

Since we live in Denmark, I am running into a brick wall trying to run down my husband's genealogy on the maternal side.

We know they came from Norway and Sweden, but cannot determine the localities closer than that and any help or advice is most welcome.

We know that my husband's mother was Eunice Peterson, b. June 18, 1922, d. 1943. Her father was 2nd generation Norwegian and her mother, b. 1880, immigrated from Sweden in 1906.

From her marriage license (1938) we know that Eunice's father, George Peterson, was then deceased and her mother, Edith Peterson, then living in Gary, Indiana, had the maiden name Uhrbom. George and Edith were married October 8, 1907 in Escanaba. There is some confusion about whether her mother's given name is Edith, Eda or Ida. (In Swedish, both Ida and Eda sound much like "Edith".)

In the 1930 Census, Edith Peterson, then living in MI, was the head of household with several children, among them, Eunice, 8 years old. So, we know that George Peterson died before 1930.

In the 1920 Census, George Peterson living in Michigan with his wife and four of the children Edith had living with her in 1930. Her name is here spelled "Eda".

On George's 1918 W.W.I draft registration in Escanaba, he is a farmer living in Ford River and his wife is Ida Sofia -- this middle name matches with other information we have. The Petersons lived in places on the Upper Peninsula -- Wells, Bark River, Ford River.

George's father was Ole [Olea - Ola] Peterson b. August 1832 and immigrated from Norway in 1873 and his mother Mary, b. December, 1844 in Norway, married Ole in 1864. In 1880, they were living in Bark River.
