John Dean , ca 1830 - 1893,

Who is the following John Dean? Is there an obit in the newspaper or just a death notice? I am trying to link him up to one of two Dean lines I have been working on and it is hard to tell one John Dean from another. The one below was found on 1880 census in Oneida, Eaton with a wife named, I think, Amelia which Ancestry has as Annlia with children Anson, "Lellon"?; William and "Eloin"? Wouldn't it have been nice for census takers to be able to spell correctly and write legibly?

Deaths: “Grand Ledge Independent “

Date of Newspaper: 17 March 1893 Page 5, Column 2
Name: Dean, John
Date of Death: Mar. 11, 1893 – Age: 63
Place of Death: Pittsburgh, Shiawassee County
Place of Burial: Grand Ledge

I have not been able to find him in any cemetery in Grand Ledge.
Benjamin Dean who died Jan 1880 in Chester: Who was he?

I have yet another unknown Benjamin Dean that I am trying to put somewhere on the Dean tree and cannot find him on any census. The only information I have which tells me he existed is the 1880 Record of Persons who died during the year ending May 31, 1880; enumerated Chester, Eaton, Michigan.

Benjamin was age 66 at last birthday; he was born in America; place of birth for parents not known. He was a farmer; died in Jan. 1880, had been a resident of the county for 25 years.

Why is he not on a census?

These days I am overrun with Deans named Hiram and Benjamin and have a few I cannot place. I have a copy of Intention filed to become citizen of the US, done by a Benjamin Dean 24 March 1866 in Charlotte. Nothing further, no other papers found in Lansing at the Archives. Who is this Benjamin Dean; perhaps someone is connected to him and can tell me about him? I know there are at least two different(unrelated as far as I know) Dean families in Michigan during the 1800s that I have run into; only one of them belongs on my tree.

WILLIAMS, Clayton m. JOHNSON, Jessie w/sons Howard & Chester

Hello:

I would like to find someone researching this family, and may have a photograph of Clayton, Jessie, and Howard to share with you.

According to the 1920 US Federal Census, Clayton Williams (age 27) and Jessie (Johnson) (age 28) were living in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MI, with sons Howard (age 2) and Chester (age 1-3/12). I also find the family living in Battle Creek in 1930, also with children Howard J. and Chester L. Age at first marriage was 20 and 22, so about 1912(?).

Jessie was the daughter of Stephen B. Johnson (middle name most likely "Burr") and Emelia (Crandall) Johnson, who are my gg-grandparents. Jessie's sister Addie Johnson married my g-grandfather Frank M. Sheldon, and through a connection of sister/mothers (Frank's mother was Adaline Crandall), they were first cousins. I have a good amout of research on both our Crandall and Johnson ancestry.

Although Clayton (1 Aug 1892 - 1983, dob per WWI Draft Registration Card) and Jessie (1890 - 1980) lived in Calhoun County, they were laid to rest in Bosworth Cemetery, Section 4, near Jessie's parents, a cemetery which is in neighboring Eaton County near Olivet.

There is a Jessie Williams in the Social Security Death Index that is most likely an exact match:

Name: Jessie Williams
SSN: 366-68-5746
Last Residence: 49017 Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan, United States of America
Born: 24 Oct 1890
Died: Jan 1980
State (Year) SSN issued: Michigan (1973 )

If this looks familiar, I would enjoy hearing from you.

Cousin,

Jack Sheldon, Jr., CPA
Sheldon Family Assn.
Forrest Sutherland born CA 1902 in Michigan: Parents?

I have been doing a bit of research on the Sutherland family of Eaton County, Michigan because by marriages they connect to my Moss/Dean marriages, families out of Canada to Michigan. But after some new information that has come my way, I now have no parents for a Forrest L or S. Sutherland, found only on 1930 census in California.

I do know he was a grandson of Joseph Kitchen Moss, but because both of Joseph's daughters married a Sutherland, I do know know which Sutherland was the Father: Edson or Orville?
Forrest is found in 1930 census with a wife Rose... he is 28, she is 20. I have not found him on any earlier census with his parents.
He also does not show up on the SSDI.

Can anyone give me his parents names, etc?

(Please: do not give the usual LDS film ""advice" - I have no libraries here for research).,

Enter thou into the joys of thy Lord."
At the age of two years her mother died, sometime later her father married Katherine Rulison, who tenderly cared for her as she did for her own. September 22, 1874 she was united in marriage to William Campbell who preceded her in death, May 24, 1902. To this union were born five children all of whom survive and were near to help care for her in her last days. Mrs. Campbell became a member of the M. E. Church at the age of 12 years and remained a faithful and loyal christian to the last. Those who are left to mourn their loss are: Mrs. Jennie Rawson, Mrs. Vinnie Hawkins of Vermontville, Mrs. Minnie Lovell of Charlotte, Lorn of Mulliken and Dale of Vermontville, 17 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 5 brothers, 1 sister, a host of relatives and friends.
He was born on 19 Dec 1810 and was educated in the public schools, the local academy and under the tuition of the local Presbyterian minister. In 1828 he. With his brother, had the charge of a large number of men and teams going overland to Washington, D.C., to work on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. At the end of two years he returned to Elbridge and resumed his studies with the pastor. He commenced in 1831 civil engineering in New Jersey and was engaged in the construction of a canal built through that state. He entered a law office in Camillus, New York where he studied for over two years. In 1836 he again engaged in railroad and canal construction in New York.
Anna Dean and "Jeils" Dean: need marriage Records, 1841

On the Dibean Marriage Index, I found two Dean marriages that may be for two of the children of my Daniel M. Dean of Ontario, Canada but I have not been able to track them further. They just do not appear on any census search or other searches I have tried today on internet, my only way of research since I do not live close to research libraries. I wonder if someone could please look at the marriage records and give me the information from them?

Both marriages took place in Eaton County, 1841 and are:
Dean, Anna - John Reynolds, Eaton, 23 Jan 1841
Deen, Jeils - Jane Crispall, Eaton, 15 April 1841
(His name should be Dean, Giles; must be bad handwriting!)

Thank you for any help you can give...

I was told they are buried in a "small parish cemetery just north of Battle Creek". If anyone knows of such a place, please let me know.

He fought in the War of 1812.

Phineas was listed in Barry Cty 1860 census. I think after that he lived in Bellevue township with his wife Mary/Mercy born abt 1792, and son Michael W. Walker. Phineas Walker was not listed in 1870 census, so I think he died by then.
Would like to find where this family is buried or anyone related to them.

Floyd Nelson Ball and father Bina Ball

Hello!

I am looking for any information about Floyd and his father Bina Ball. I have Bina born about 1857 near Charlotte and in the 1880 census, shows he was married that year to Ellen E. Powers (I think Powers.) But Floyd was born in 1879, so I think they may have been married in 1879 also. The different years of census have me confused, as in 1860, shows Bina as R. Urbina, 3 years and a female! I know this has to be him, his father's name is Nelson, which is also Floyd's middle name - as I have no proof of this, just strong coincidence with being born in the same area, etc. Nelson shows he is married to Barbara in that same year census - 1860. Any help is greatly appreciated! Floyd is my great-great-grandad! I thought I had his obituary, but all I can find is his program from his funeral, which says he is laid to rest in the Bosworth Cemetery in Eaton, County....so he never moved far from home!
Thanks to anyone that can help!
Jennifer

First marriage in Rives Township History Book - Harrison Berry and Miss Myra Fisher a niece of Pardon Fisher.

In the Rives Township History Book:
The first marriage was Harrison Berry and Miss Myra Fisher, a niece of
Pardon Fisher. The wedding was held at the home of the bride's uncle. Samuel
Prescott Justice of Peace performed the marriage rites in 1840. At the
reception fried cakes were furnished by the Fisher family and all who
attended the wedding had all they could eat. John Leach, grandfather of
Alfred (Pat) Leach of Rives Junction and William Northrup were among those
attending.

We wonder if there is anything available that would tell who Maria/Myra's
father is. A brother of Pardon (who is in Jackson County) but is the father
of Maria/Myra James Fisher of Eaton county, or, did yet another brother
accompany them to NY.

I and a cousin believe that Harrison Berry is William H. (Harrison) Berry
and that Myra Fisher is Maria (Fisher) Berry and that they are counted in
the 1840 census in the household of John Berry MI, Jackson, Tompkins.
Males
1 20 under 30
1 60 uner 70
females
1 15 and under 20
1 60 and under 70.
Trees I have found have the marriage as abt 1842 so originally I discounted
this household as possibly having Maria in it, then after finding more over
the course of time, and due to the information from a generous look up
person, do believe that this is them.

This is Maria and family in 1850.
1850 MI, Henrietta, Jackson

Maria Berry 27 f NY

Helen 7 f Mich

Edgar 5 m Mich

William 3 Mich

George 1 m Mich

Amos Evans 14 NY

William Fisher 23 Farmer NY

(Is William Fisher a brother of Maria? Otherwise related?)

We haven't yet found a marriage for George Lee and Maria but here they are
in 1860 and the Berry kids are now going by Lee.

1860 Michigan, Jackson, Rives

George Lee 37 m farmer NY

Maria 36 f NY

Hellen 16 f Mich

Edgar 14 m Mich

William 12 m Mich

George 10 m Mich

Oscar 8 m Mich

We have followed Edgar Berry hoping to find out who his Fisher grandparents
are without success. He and Jesse Leigh Fisher who is a son of Pardon T
Fisher show together in the 1870, though Edgar is indexed Beery.
Edgar being with Jesse Leigh Fisher, son of Pardon, makes a family
relationship seem likely.

In 1870 Edgar is indexed as Beery.
1870 Subdivision No Two, County of Clay Territory, State of
Dakota
Vermillion Dakota Territory.

Fisher Jesse L 44 m w Farmer b. New York
Beery Edgar 27? m, b. Michigan
Turner John W? 70 m, b. New York

We have been trying to figure out who the parents of my GGgrandmother,
Harriet Rachel Fisher Bryant are and she and her husband Sylvanus Bryant
(marriage record is found recorded as Brant) and took place in Rives,
Jackson, MI and at first we suspected that Harriet was daughter of Pardon,
but a search on Heritage Quest has his daughter Harriet married to an Austin
and she died the history says at age 23 and that has them married 5 January
1852. It appears that Harriet is survived by a son William Austin and after
the death of Harriet Mr. Austin married Mary E. Whitney, daughter of Obediah
Whitney. Obediah's family is right above William and Harriet Austin in the
1850 census.

1850 Michigan, Jackson, Henrietta 27 day of Augt

1054-1078

William I? ?Austin 23 m farmer Ny

Harriet 21 f NY

With yet another Fisher family present in MI, Jackson, Henrietta in 1850,
which is where my GGgrandparents Sylvanus and Harriet Bryant and 1 yr old
son Henry Densmore Bryant are as well and her maiden name of Fisher, it just
seems hopeful that there is something in the area that would point toward
naming relationships and her parents. They are all very near one another.

Also in 1850 MI, Jackson, Henrietta is

1050-1073

George L Fisher 28 m Brickmaker NY

Caroline 22 f NY

Althea 4 f Mich

Isora 3 f Mich

Lewis 1 m Mich.

We've followed George L. to Illinois and from Illinois to Iowa where he died
at the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown, Marshall County Iowa. We found also a
William E. Fisher in Illinois that is a good match for the William that was
with Maria Berry in 1850.

I fear that I've written to much, just so very anxious to determine if there
is in fact a relationship between these Fisher's and to find the parents and
siblings of my GGgrandmother Harriet.

Thanks for reading!

Barbara Drummer

Dow, Kendall - Obit

Kendall Dow led a simple life. As a very salt of the earth kind of person, he was a hard worker even from his earliest moments. The man Kendall grew into reflected this fact, as he was a stable, thorough and dependable person people were truly proud to know.

The early 1920s were a collage of interesting events. There were power struggles in Russia, Babe Ruth was setting baseball records and the first Miss America was crowned. But for most of the people living in the farming community of Sunfield, Michigan, such happenings were nothing more than headlines in a newspaper. Their lives centered around raising their families and earning a living. This was the life of C. Kenneth and Hildreth (Bishop) Dow. The Dows owned an eighty-acre farm where they harvested just about everything. In the spring of 1920, the couple was not only preparing the fields for planting, but they were also awaiting the birth of their second child. On March 4th, their son Kendall made his arrival into the world.

Along with his three brothers, Kendall grew up with an appreciation for hard work. By five, he was responsible for milking the cows twice a day, and when the Great Depression hit, he helped his father plow the fields with horses instead of tractors, since fuel was so costly. Kendall was pretty small built as a teenager, weighing in at some 90 lbs., but this was a great asset to him when it came to playing basketball. Kendall holds the record at Su
